Hi
I am trying to figure out if it is worth the cost of calling a repairman to fix my dryer or just buy a new one.
It is almost 4 years old (GE).
Am I looking at around $100.00 to $150.00 for a service call?
A new one is around $298.00 plus tax.
Thoughts and opinions greatly appreciated.

Hugs Mel

adding info
dryer is overheating and shutting off.
Vent has been removed and vacuumed.
heating up even on no heat setting---then shutting off.

Would the $100-150 include parts? If it doesn't then they'll likely charge you $50+ for parts making your bill $150-200+.

I'm not sure how handy you are, but if you google your dryer make, model number, and problem then you might find a simple, cheap solution (ex. "GE GTMN500EMWS dryer overheating")

I did this for our dryer when the door locked and wouldn't open. I found 2 solutions to it and tried the easier one (unplug to reset computer) before the second one (removing panels and prying latch open with long screwdriver). Lucky for me, the first solution worked (and it's one I should have thought of).

There's even a couple of websites where you can get answers from professionals, they typically charge for an quick answer or you can wait to (hopefully) get an answer from the public.

Good luck!

Not sure what part of the vent has been vacuumed. If you haven't done this, you should check the vent outside the house to ensure it is blowing.

Something else that may bring up the cost of repairs is how they may package the part you need. Many times, the part needed will only be available in an assembly you don't need, and can't be purchased alone.

I always tend to repair my appliances at least once before re-purchase, but I'm not sure it's a cost effective way to do it after I factor in my time to do the repair, gas for my car to go get the part, etc.

I just did a dryer repair a month ago. Had to dissassemble pretty much the whole frick'n dryer just to replace the part. It probably took me 2-3 hours total, and cost be a few knuckle scrapes too! lolololol

Ok I decided it wasn't worth repairing,,and I have scrapped knuckles too.:sad2:
The venting outside is plugged and I've asked the condo corp (townhouse) to remove what I believe is a birds nest and put a new screening over the vent.
I bought a new Maytag--on sale at home depot $318.00 plus tax and opted to buy the extra 4 year warranty which cost $99.00.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions and thoughts.

Our dryer was over 10 yrs old when it died, so we decided to get a new one just a few weeks ago, a Samsung for $413 incl tax at Sears Clearance center. had a big sale. It took us a few minutes to figure out how to turn it on, lol.
