We're having real problems gettign a first passport for my dp. Despite the enclosed leaflet saying birth certificate, the Post Office are saying we have to send a Full Birth Cert (which neither us or his parents have!), and he will have to go to where he was registered to collect (Worcester - about 2 1/2 hours away!) It looks like we may not be going after all as it will take six weeks and we go in 5 1/2 :( :( I am so cross at the PO, especially as I had already paid for check and send the first time and then it was returned.

Has anyone applied for a first adult passport and had it sorted reasonably quickly, please let there be some hope!

My BIL had this problem as his birth certificate was in Liverpool. I'm pretty sure he went in person to collect it although you could have it sent to you, at a cost. I'm sure it didn't take six weeks either way. You might be better off phoning Worcester to see if it could be 'hurried along'. Is there anyone there who could collect it and post it on to you?

I know last summer my auntie applied for her first passport and it took 10 days. I know we never waited very long for the kids passports. hopefully you will get it sorted out quickly :thumbsup2

We sent off for all of our passports for our trip in December. All were sent via PO check and send, Mine was a renewal and was back within a week. DS's was a first child and was back within a fortnight.

DH's was a new adult passport and we sent it off on 12th September via PO Check and send, he had a letter as you have to have an interview now for the first adult passport and his interview was on 15th October and his passport was actually received Friday 17th, so 5 weeks in total

Hope this helps, he could have had an interview as soon as a day after he received the letter but couldn't go until the 15th as he was away, which would have probably have cut it down by about a week.

The passport service website only "recommends" giving it up to 6 weeks, so as long as you process everything as quickly as possible, you should hopefully get your partner's passport in time.

I applied for my first passport before we went in September, had to have an interview about 45 minutes drive away at the passport office which is the norm now for Adult passports.

After the interview I had my passport 3 days later so in total took about 15 days or there abouts from start to finish.

With regards to the birth certificate I was born in Reading (London) but live in Devon,Torquay now so I called them on a monday and paid £6, birh certificate arrived 2 days later so I'm sure you can pay a small fee to get it posted to you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, going to send the application tomorrow with the small cert, and then we can send the full certificate off to them recorded delivery if they need it - that's what the Passport Office have suggested we do. He works just down the road from one of the interview offices, so can go at any time and if they have a cancellation, he can pop out of work, so hopefully he will be seen quickly!

So fingers crossed all round please, I will cry if it doesn't arrive in time :(

Hope it works out OK :) We had to get a first passport for our DD2 for our trip and it took about 2 weeks (we used check and send too). But we did have her full birth cert as we always buy one when we get the kid's registered - saves hassle later :)

Good luck!

PS - I *think* you can actually go to a 'local' passport office and collect your passport which can hurry things along. Also there is a place you can go and stand and have it done but don't know much about it - is it Liverpool? An option if it really gets tight although it would mean day off work/trip somewhere....

Thanks, we've found out that he can order it online or by phone, he doesn't have to go to Worcester despite what Mr PO man says! Unfortunatly, due to the changes introduced to first-time adult passport applications, you now need an interview and therefore, you can't go to an office anymore and get it done on the same day!

OOoh thanks for that - I didn't think they interviewed every applicant so that's something I've learnt for future should we need it :) Hope he gets it sorted in time.
