NYC on a budget

When visiting the museums you don't need to pay the "requested" price. The last time we were there, tickets to the Met were $20 each. I said I'd like to pay $5 per person and no problem. I wondered how many people just automatically pay what's requested.
Also, check out Restaurant.com and wait for 80% off, then print a few coupons. I think I saw Pig and Whistle on the list. Just research some of the restaurants first. We went to Brasserie Cognac last month and saved $25 off the check.
You could also see if there is an Entertainment book for Manhattan. It might be worth the $30 to have discount coupons to most attractions
New York is entertaining in itself. Just walking around is fun. Go downtown to the Villages and check out the unique shops and galleries.
Whatever you do, have fun! I think $1200 is more than enough.

I love Ellen's Stardust. We were there last April and sat at the bar, which was really fun. Although the staff does not perform at breakfast, we ate there and it was very good.

I think LION KING is stunning. I def. think you need tickets ahead. Make sure about line of sight -- we were partially blocked one time (but still great!).

Serendipity is more ice cream/treats and is kind of "tourist priced" if you know what I mean. If you're looking for dinner the night of the show, be sure to get in early so you don't have to stress. Some interesting places on 46th and 47th. Also check on 9th Avenue for good prices.

Any specific likes on these streets (especially some with NON-tourist prcies?) Like the OP I like checking out their websites first if possible - and Mapquesting their location - then I feel less 'lost' while there (and look less touristy/, which makes me feel safer )

We went to Serendipity and were disappointed. It's had a lot of coverage as it was a featured site in a movie, and it's been on the food channel because it has the most expensive sundae in the world ($1000, there's gold in it). We went for supper and dessert. Food is run of the mill, mediocre, expensive, disappointing. Frozen hot chocolate was worth the $8, though! I'd only suggest it for the fhc, maybe other desserts, but definitely NOT for a meal! Oh, and did I mention the 1 hr. wait to be seated?? At 10:15pm??

We decided to see "The Lion King"...because that one is so popular, do you experts think it would be wise to wait and get tickets at the ticket booths, or should I play it safe and order them ahead of time??

The friend that we are going with suggested trying out the restaurant "Serendipity"...anyone ever eaten there?

Now, I am going to check out all the other places that you all mentioned!

Can't tell you anything about Serendipity...never been there but I would get the tickets in advance for a popular show like Lion King

Check Travelzoo for show discounts. The other day, they had a link to get Rock of Ages tickets for half price for certain dates in March.
