I know my chances are slim of getting into the race through the lottery. I'm determined to run NYC and Boston one day, so I figured I'd try to get into NYC the 'cheap' way before I try to get into Boston with a charity in a few years.

Who else is in the lottery with me?

So they've already opened the lottery? I'm debating....started and .finished the Columbus in 2010 w/an injured foot....not fun but I was determined. I hurt my knee after the 2010 wdw marathon. Part of me thinks I'm stronger, but part of me thinks I should just stick to halfs......

The lottery opened at the beginning of last month. I'm definitely going back mostly to 1/2's myself. Last year was hard on my body doing 3 fulls in 2 months.

I am in the lottery, but hope I don't get in this year, since registration is soo high for International runner (Canada is "International"), $347! I just got in through their lottery to run the NYC 1/2 on March 18th and just signed up to run Chicago, so getting in for the full will break the bank for sure:scared1:

Well, technically I show up as in the lottery. But I submitted a time that should get me a guaranteed entry. But almost 3 weeks later (their time frame) and still no confirmation. Looks like I may have to write them and see if they are going to accept my time or not (there was a glitch with the qualifying race). I wrote them in advance and they said they would take it--hope they stick to that. If not, I guess I'm still in the lottery--which doesn't really excite me.

I wouldn't stress it yet. NYRR is my local club, and they pretty much never do anything on time :lmao: By all means send them a email, but my guess is they are "swamped" and taking longer than anticipated. Very typical.

I'm in with guaranteed entry too via their 9+1 program. It will be my third nycm in a row, but probably my last for a while. I love this race so much, but after this year, time to see what else is out there.

I am so jealous!! Running the NYC marathon will be pure chance for me and I would like to do it some day. I heard from a lot of my friends that the Philly marathon is a really nice race to run. Of course, there is always Chicago!

I am in this year since I had to defer for medical reasons last year. Can't wait!

I would actually recommend Hartford over Philly. It's a good medium-size race, and the half splits from the full about a mile or so into the race (Philly the half splits right before their finish line). I think it's very mentally tough to have to pass a finish line when you still have 13.1 miles to go, and often times the second half of the course is pretty bare. Of course Hartford isn't anywhere near the NYC/Chicago scale, but it's still a good one. There's enough crowd support so it doesn't feel lonely, but the course is clear enough so you're in a pack the whole time, course is (relatively) flat, good post-race spread, and metal is nice, too. Can't ask for much else!

If you're looking for a fall marathon, don't forget about Marine Corps. It's a great race, very well organized, lots of crowd support, and not nearly the cost or hassle of New York.

I've thought about that race too. Any idea when registration opens for MCM?

I want to do another big marathon someday that isn't at Disney, but one where the race is only a marathon that day. Nothing against 1/2 marathons, because I usually enjoy them more than a full, but the 1/2 is so popular now that most people run that instead of the full. The races I've run with the 1/2 option as well, the 1/2 splits off and the course loses all the excitement and crowd support that it had before.

I'm in the lotto. This is my finally my last lotto year, so if it's not this year, it's next year.

Did you get their email today?!? It sold out yesterday! Less than 1 week and they hit 45,000. That's crazy.

Thank God I signed up the first day!! Couple of friends missed out because they waited!

Marine Corp can sell out in minutes! Registration opens March 7, 2012!! This one is on my list too.

I put my name in the lottery for NYC but I know my chances are slim. We live in Westchester County and my kids have tons of weekend activities so it'll be hard for me to do 9+1 until my kids are much older.

This year, registration opens on March 7. Last year the race sold out in 28 hours or something like that, so if you want to enter, get in there right when it opens.

I have automatic entry that I'm not using. I'm not paying $255 for a race that most of my friends described last year as a 26.2 mile shuffle.

Well I guess that just decided it for me---was trying to decide whether to enter the lottery---my running partner just found out she's pregnant so I couldn't decide whether to go it alone. Can't believe even the lottery sold out! I didn't even think of that!

This is my 2nd year entering the lottery so looks like I will be grandfathered in as long as i keep applying:) i will be in by 2014:yay:

I thought they did away with that rule? That was my plan originally, to start entering the lottery in order to run by 2015.

They did away with it. The only way you can run under this rule is in 2012 or 2013. 2014 is too late.
