I am trying to teach my friend to be budget minded so I am helping her find a nice but not break-the-bank expensive hotel in NYC the last week of August. She is meeting up with some other friends who are staying at the Wyndham Garden Times Square South. That hotel is already booked solid so she wants to stay nearby.

Using my awesome :rolleyes1 computer skills, I have started looking for hotels but since I have never been to NYC I am not sure of the area. The Wyndham Garden is in the 300 block of 36th Street (I think it is just north of 8th Ave). I found a Comfort Inn in the 400 block of 36th St and another Comfort Inn (a bit more expensive) in the 300 block of 39th St. Are these nice hotels...for a Comfort Inn...or should she look elsewhere? If they are both okay, which one would you pick?

Thanks in advance for your help/opinions. We both thank you!

You should look on skyauction.com. I saw good hotels on there in Time Square. I like the Hilton times square.

Go to trip advisor and read reviews. There are so many reviews that you can usually find lots that address the safety and convenience of the location.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn at 442 36th Street in December, it was near the Convention Center and we went tere for a Dental Meeting. It was SMALL as all NY hotels are but clean and had a friendly staff and a great free breakfast. It was a walk to Times Square but there were 5 of us so we didn't walk alone. I did a review for it on mytripadvisor (check that for reviews).

stay any where near times square or Macy's..these are the better hotels, stay near grand central or up near central park south or near madison ave.....

$149 -- Brand New Times Square Hotel incl. Weekends, 50% Off*
Premium cabin

Travelzoo Staff, New York - updated 4/26/2011

Finding an affordable Times Square hotel is tricky, but now summer travelers can book a "cabin" at the new YOTEL New York for $149 per night.

After this grand opening sale, the innovative hotel will charge a regular rate of $299.

This deal will be available for daily travel June 15 - Sept. 5 and includes free continental breakfast and Wi-Fi.

Rather than traditional rooms, this hotel has high-tech "cabins" with iPod docking stations and Monsoon showers. The space is compact but every inch has been put to use -- the breakfast tray doubles as laptop table and with the push of a button, a handmade mattress reclines into a plush queen-size bed.

In addition to unique accommodations, this hotel will boast the largest outdoor terrace of any hotel in the city. Everything has a dual purpose -- the on-site Dohyo restaurant can convert to a performance venue and the yoga studio can transform to a movie viewing room.

Not available on: June 17-18 (rooms might be available at a higher rate).

Note: This is an advance purchase, non-refundable offer.
Book by May 2.

Good topic,Hey I am new to join this group. My friend and me visit the first time NY.There are Metro-North, but they're commuter rail and fare is base on zone. There are lots of good hotel in that area.you can enjoy to view hotels with good facility. The Beacon Hotel on the upper west side has suites, and very good prices. I naver reserved it for a June get-together with girlfriends.

I grew up on 36th Street - it is the garment district. I moved from NY 5 years ago, but my father still travels up there and he tells me that 36th Street has definitely changed. I would stay in the 300s, that would be between 8th and 9th Avenue, 400 might be 9th and 10th Avenue, putting you right outside the exit tunnel for the Lincoln Tunnel. There is a E train station entrance on 35th Street that is very convenient. Yes, the Marriott Marquis is nice as are other hotels on Park, Fifth and Madison Avenue, but you pay for location. I would have no problems staying on 36th Street, 39th Street puts you closer to the Port Authority, which means a lot more pedestrian traffic.

Thanks for the extra info. She has decided to stay at the one on 36th St due to how close it is to the other hotel. Plus she is taking Amtrak into Penn Station so it should work out.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions!

Hi
I personally stayed at the The Hotel at Times Square....located on 59 West 46th Street. It is owned and managed by the applecore hotel chain. I stayed at this hotel during New Years 2010 and 2011. I would not hesitate to stay there again in a milisecond..... The rooms was comfortable, clean and they serve a continental breakfast in the am. There is also a small bar on the 2nd floor that has a friendly staff. The staff was also helpful. Within walking distance to Time Square and Rockefeller Plaza. I believe they also own/manage the Comfort Inn.

I found this hotel on tripadvisor. Tripadvisor is the traveling man's bible. It has always given me a good experience.

Forgot to give you the number to the Hotel at times square......reservations are 1-800-567-7720. I booked online myself

There are hotels with similiar names.... make sure it is the address 59 West, 46th Street.

I'm a little bias because I work for Hyatt but the Grand Hyatt next to Grand Central Station is an awesome location. My mom and I went alone twice and never had an issue or felt unsafe. It's within walking distance to a lot of things. We're going back this Aug to take my son for his 13th birthday.
They are going through renovations right now inside the hotel so just keep that in mind if you do choose to stay there.
Have Fun!
