Well my dd is graduating this month from HS and I would like to take her to NYC for a day trip this summer. We would like to go the Museum of Natural History, The 9-11 site and her suggestions of some serious shopping. She would like to go to Trash and Vaudville(never heard of it...what is it?) and a really fun place for dinner. We have gone to the Jekyll and Hyde Club and would like to try some where else that would be fun. Any suggestions and can it be done in one day? We are "country bumpkins" :) so any ideas on what we could do would be great.

you're going to be doing a lot of travelling! the museum is in the 80's, ground zero is all the way down town.

a fun place I like to go for dinner is Ellen's Stardust Diner, it's the home of the singing waitstaff. it's right next to the Wintergarten theater, Broadway and 51st streets.

it's right across the street from mars2112 -- that's a fun place, too, but a bit pricey and touristy.

The Museum of Natural History is huge and could really take up the whole day to see. You can cut it to however short you'd like it to be, but you'll be missing a lot. Not sure what Trash and Vaudeville is:confused:

As far as a "fun" eating place, there are several themed restaurants including Planet Hollywood, Hard Rock Cafe and Mars 2112. They're all fun and the food is pretty average fare. For a lively atmosphere and good italian food, you could try Carmine's. There are 2 locations--one of which is right in Times Square. Food is served family style and is reasonable for NYC standards.

Have fun!

Trash and Vaudeville is a funky, retro punk store located in the East Village. Given the "trendy" factor, the place is fairly pricey for "used" clothing. Not all of it is used but still pricey nonetheless. Your daughter would likely love it! FYI, it's located on St. Mark's Place in the East Village. A pretty neat neighborhood that is more for the younger set.

That area is an easy walk to the SoHo section of Manhattan so perhaps a shopping day is in order? Or simply wandering that neighborhood?

To tell the truth, it's easy to spend a nice Saturday simply walking and sightseeing from the East Village, into SoHo, then on into the West Village. Lots to see. Tons of funky stores. Great restaurants everywhere.

I second the comment about Museum of Natural History and Ground Zero being quite a distance and a lot to do in one day. Ground Zero is simply a place to contemplate and perhaps say a few prayers. The Museum can and would take a huge chunk of the day.

I am going to give my daughter (who is graduating too) tickets to De La Guarda and The Blue Man Group. Both are really fun shows, De La Guarda is funky, you stand and move around the whole time.
On Friday and Sat. nights a place called the Lafayette Grill has live music and bellydancers. Lots of fun too, in fact I'll be going again next week.

I've been to ground zero. Its really powerful. Its, its definetly something every American should go and see.

I will give you directions from grand central. Go to the subways. Go to the machine and buy a funsaver one day pass for everyone. This lets you use all transportation in the city for free. Get on Flushing Local labeled 7 in a purple circle. Take it from Grand Central-42 Street / Lexington Avenue to Times Square-42 Street /Broadway / 7 Avenue. You will get off and walk in a tunnel to 42 Street-Port Authority/ Bus Terminal. Its a 3 min. walk and it feels like one subway station.

Then board a subway on the E line. It is E in a blue circle. E is 8th avenue local. Get on and ride it all the way to World Trade Center. It is the last stop.

I know this sounds really complicated and hard, but it really isn't. So thats how you get to WTC. If you need anymore help please leave me a personal message. Its no problem for me. (I used to live near the city). I hope you have fun!!!
