NYC-Best Place to Park

I may surprise the kids with a daytrip to NYC tomorrow. We will be driving from RI and I'm looking for someplace cheap and safe to park..I think I've seen parking lots in NJ that are cheap. Then, how do you get to the city?

You could take the PATH train from Hoboken or Jersey City. They are fast and inexpensive. Here's the website that has info about parking near the various stations.

You could park at Secaucus Junction right off Route 3, west of NYC, and take the train into Penn Station. I think parking is $10 for however long you stay and the ride into NYC is about 15 minutes long.

Also, you can check out www.centralparking.com and look for a garage in the area you want to visit. They have coupons you can print out for a set rate for up to 6 hours or up to 12 hours. Best deal ever! We parked in the theater district for $13, and other times uptown for $12-$15.

What about taking the train in? You can easily drive to Old Saybrook (I live in that area), park for free at the train station there. You just have to switch in New Haven but the train is right there so you just walk across the platform.

If you're coming from RI, going to NJ to park is silly.

You can take Metro North from anywhere along the coast in CT. If you want to drive as far as possible, you can go to Stamford then have a lower train fare. The smaller towns will have less parking available.

Well, if you are REALLY lucky, there is free street parking on Park Ave near 79th/80th street. My friend lives there and she parks right on the street. Of course you have to sit in your car at certain times of the day while they sweep the street If she gets there and there isn't a spot, she leaves it double parked, gives the doorman $20 and he takes care of it when someone else leaves.

But that's probably not practical for you.

Your best bet is to take MetroNorth from New Haven and leave your car in the parking garage in New Haven (If I remember right it costs $13 for a 24 hour period). Then when you get to NY, take a subway to get where you need to go. If you are unsure about the subway, HOP STOP is a good app that will tell you what bus or subway to take between any two points. NEW YORK SUBWAY app has a good subway map for planning purposes

Agree with New Haven and Stamford advice - New Haven obviously will mean you'll be on the trains longer (and pay more for tickets) but perhaps you'll enjoy less driving. Also, depending on the time of day you're going, the drive between New Haven and Stamford can be a lot longer than the train ride.

Icon parking has good deals on line. That is for parking in the city. Of corse if you rather not drive in the city than parkand take metro north.

Driving from RI?


Drive 95 South to Westport, CT (exit 17, I believe). MetroNorth into Grand Central. Family Fare for kids is less than $2.00 roundtrip. You buy your tickets right on the platform. You'll be on the train about an hour and 15 minutes. We usually take the 10:30 train which brings us into the city before noon.
Parking in Westport is free.

That's great if you can get to Westport before, say, 7:00 a.m., but don't count on finding a spot after that. (That's our train station - husband commutes from there.) And it's not free - without a permit I think it's $4-$5 a day.

Forgot tomorrow is a weekday, parking will be an issue anywhere due to the number of commuters into the city.
Although, we have in the past had more difficulty parking in New Haven than Westport.
Parking in Westport is free on the weekends. Kids under 5 are free and kids ages 5-11 fall under the family fare.

Thanks. This sounds just like what I was looking for. My ds7 has been wanting to ride a train also. I''ll remember this for a long weekend and go on the weekend.

But I decided to go to the Cape instead. Water Wizz water park.

If you are driving from RI, I would suggest parking in SW Connecticut and take Metro North in. Why pay the trolls and fight traffic to New Jersey to then take the train?
