UGH.

I am looking to rent an apartment in Manhatten (after moving out of my last one a few weeks back when I discovered my ex-BF that I was living with cheated on me).

I looked at a number of places this week and there was only one decent one so far -a studio and the building doesn't even have a full time doorman.

I sent in an application for the place and it appears they want people who make 48x the rent (which is $2200). Which is fine - I get it - but I'm just frustrated. I make nearly 6 figures (which is slightly under their threshhold) work for a prestigious company, have a solid rent historty, etc. and can't even afford a decent studio in the city?? What the heck???

I know I will need to go out again and look more and adjust my expectations and all - but on top of having to move out of my place that I was in and the cheating and all - I'm just really, really, really frustrated by this whole thing right now.

thanks for listening....

It's definitely frustrating.

It's been over a decade since I lived in the city. I lived in a 1 bedroom at World Wide Plaza where I rented out the living room to people I found in the paper. Have you thought about getting a roommate?

I ended up moving to Hoboken where the rent was much cheaper and could get a lot more space for the money. Just about everyone I know who still lives in NYC lives in Brooklyn. Only one still in Manhattan lives in Alphabet City without a doorman.

I own in Jersey City now. My mortgage is cheaper than most rents around here. There are people moving from the to my neighborhood all the time.

I guess there's always Brooklyn...or trying to find a place with a roommate of some sort.

When I lived in Manhattan I split a tiny 2BR apartment in the Village with another guy and it ran us like $3200/mo. It was ridiculous.

Whenever I get depressed about the $3800/mo I pay for my much larger townhouse in Washington, I think about what I used to pay in NYC. I'm sorry you're having a hard time finding a place. Best wishes.

Oh yes it's brutal. Best of luck to you. Maybe think outside the box a little. Do you HAVE to live in NYC? Can you move out to Brooklyn Heights or maybe even westchester? The commute from Scarsdale *we lived on Garth Road was a piece of cake and a GREAT neighborhood.

My grandmother lived in a DUMP of a 2 bedroom(really really tiny. They said 2 bedroom but that's about all there was with a tiny kitchen. BUT she did have a back concrete deck area. It was on St. Mark's place. She was paying $150 with rent control.
When she died, the landlord did NOTHING to the place and raised the rent to $2000!

thanks everyone - I appreciate the comisery (is that a word?)

I lived in a great doorman building for 5 years in the East 30's with a roommate- then gave it up to move in with guy on Long Island for the past 2 years.

I definitely want to be in the city (although I know Hoboken is great - its just not right for me right now). And no rommate - at 31 years old I just can't handle living with someone else in a tiny NYC apartment.

My former landlord owned the apartment in the east 30's and rented it out - I went back to her this time, but she's got nothing in my range at the moment.

What's even more frustrating is that they are offering all these great delas right now to get people to rent (1month free, no security deposit, etc). So I know they aren't flush with tenants around here right now.

I'm looking at more places over the weekend - maybe this one just isnt meant to be? UGH. It's just really time consuming and annoying...

My daughter just moved to the East Village area last month...I have total empathy for you! We almost had to give our firstborn up! We had to be guarantors for her to rent the apt..could/would your parents do the same for you if that is where you want to be?

:confused3

The rents in NY was the main reason I moved! I was sick of fighting for a place then paying a fortune to fight vermin and crime...

I pay half that now for a 4 bedroom house. I can't move back to NY for that reason and that reason alone.

Brooklyn is where life is civlized. Real kitchens, real closets, actual bedrooms. Come to the dark side..bwa ha ha a!!!!

You know - I thought about Brooklyn - but I don't think I'm ready for that yet :) I love Brooklyn Heights, thought - what a great area!

I think I may have found a place and am going to see two more tomorrow. Crossing fingers they are good!

I live in Brooklyn, moved from Manhattan years ago, and I LOVE it here. Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope, Bay Ridge...great neighborhoods within a few subway stops to Manhattan.

Some parts of Bensonhurst, Mill Basin, Marine Park, Madison, Dyker...again great neighborhoods close to the Belt Pkwy.

DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is an artistic, SOHO-style area if you like that, and you can walk across the bridge into Manhattan.

So many people are moving out of Manhattan into Brooklyn. We still have all the fantastic restaurants and night life without tunneling it. And so many celebrities live here, too, if you're star struck.:thumbsup2

Definitely not star struck (although was actually struck by a number of people at Fashion's Night out last night in thier effort to be closer to the stars that were on hand at some of the events). It was crazy!

I'm holding out hope that one of the four places I've narrowed it down to will be the right fit.

My daughter worked that last nite! Haven't talked to her today yet, sounds like it was busy!!!!

If you can't find anything in Manhattan in your price range, you may just have to suck it up and move to Brooklyn.

okay all you brooklyn folks. We may move to brookly in maybe 4 years. Maybe that is. Right now we have a 4 bedroom 2 1/2 bath 2 story 2700 sf foot new home we bought 5 years back for $138,000 in Houston but if ds who goes to school at Columbia wants us to see about moving to New York but I dunno. I know I will definitly not get what I have now but what can I get for a small 2 bedroom with kitchen in a good area in brooklyn in a building? Rent wise what would be ideal? and purchase wise how much? I am not worried about schools but not a lot of crime and close to good restaurants and such. I need to start looking and preparing years ahead lol!!:cool1::cool1::worship::cloud9::cloud9::love:

Yeah - $1200 for 2500sqft sounds great! At $2200 I'm going to barely get 600sqft.

But - that's what I get for city living!

Tomorrow brings 4 more apartments to view - we'll see how it goes. All are doormen buildings and all are pet friendly so I have hope still!

And yes - Fashion's Night Out was crazy busy! My company's store had a TON of folks inside and all of our retail neighbors were busy as well.

I saw Anna Wintour, Zac Posen, Alexander Wang, Milo Ventigmela in Bergdorfs and Charlize Theron at Dior. The crowds were out of control. I was shoved ALL over the place while trying to walk through the store and checkout the events. I'm glad the night was a success though. We definitely needed a good moment in the city to get people shopping again!

Brooklyn rocks! Seriously....it's like being in the city and the "burbs" (really cool 'burbs) at the same time. We lived in Park Slope---absolutely the most favorite place I've ever lived. I would love to move back...but we couldn't afford it at this point. We had a great one-bedroom flr. thru on a named street for 1650. per month in the late 90's. It's at least twice that now....but is was great!
