Yikes!! My dad is flying out of JFK to go to Ukraine in June. He needs to get from St. Louis to NYC first though. How would he get from either Newark or Laguardia to JFK? How long would that take? Do you know approx cost?

Personally I think he's going about this the wrong way, but it is what it is. Now we've got to figure out how to make it work. If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them. He is talking about flying all carry-on if that makes a difference.

Thanks so much!!

There is a train shuttle between Laguardia and JFK.

Thanks! Is it direct or do you go through Penn Station? Would I just look on the MTA site for info?

Someone told him that there was a new direct train from Newark to JFK, but I can't find any info on that so far.

No. There is no one-seat public transit ride to any of the New York airports from Manhattan, and thus no one seat ride between any two of them.

The JFK AirTrain is relatively new. It has three routes: one which circulates among all the terminals, and is free; one which goes to the Howard Beach subway station via the long-term parking lots, and one which goes to the Sutphin Blvd subway/Jamaica LIRR station. The latter two routes have a $5 fare, payable when leaving the system coming from JFK.

Public transit to between JFK and Newark is going to take four changes of trains. You'll start in both cases with the AirTrain to Jamaica. The cheaper but more time-consuming route is the E train to Penn Station, the faster route is the LIRR to Penn Station. In both cases you'll take New Jersey Transit from Penn Station to Newark Airport. You'll then take the Newark AirTrain to your terminal. The former is about 2 hours if you time all the connections perfectly (heh indeedy!), and about $20 to the best of my recollection. The latter is about 90 minutes and $28.

When I had to travel to New York for business, I used public transit to all three airports multiple times. It's criminal how bad the public transit connections are to the New York airports, especially compared to the reality-based parts of the world. The only thing worse is driving, and no way was I paying $60 for a cab.

No, there isn't. There is no rail service at all to LaGuardia, only bus service.

holy crow! I actually wrote train didn't I?????? :lmao: I meant bus but was asking DH about the light rail (Airtrain) while I was posting.

Of course you can always shell out for a cab.

Thank you so much! This is all a big help. I found one site that told me that the approx cab fare from Laguardia to JFK would be $35. Do you think that's accurate? Would you do that route if time is an issue?

I was saying $60 cab fare from midtown. $35 between LaGuardia and JFK sounds about right. Much as I'd hate it, you might go that route if time was critical, as public transit between LaGuardia and JFK is the worst, I think, of the airport pairs. Then again, the Van Wyck and Grand Central Pkwy. can be dead-stop congested at any hour of the day or night. If there was (heh indeedy, again!) no traffic, it could be a 20 minute trip door-to-door. Worse case, it could be an hour or more.

Thanks! That all seems to fit with what I'm finding, but he's just not quite believing me yet.

I might approach this situation like trying to go onto a cruise: Fly into New York the day before, stay overnight, and then take a leisurely trip from Newark to JFK the next day. I'd be worried about connecting like that.

Thanks! I'll take all of the suggestions like that I can. I totally agree with you, but he's still getting concerned about needing to work the day/night before. Frankly, I'm worried about the connection myself. I think he's talking too short on the return too, but getting back to STL isn't near as big a deal as messing up the flight to Ukraine - time, money or effort-wise.

If it helps to add another voice, OP, I think you're absolutely right to be worried about the connection time. Like a PP said, traffic can be horrendous on the Van Wyck and the Grand Central Parkway at any hour, not just rush hour. Then he's got to worry about getting through security at JFK, which can take a pretty long time at any hour. (I just got to JFK last week at 5:30 am for a 6:45 flight, thinking that I'd have no problem so early in the morning, but there was a very long line at security and we just barely made the flight.)

The internet says this about inter-airport shuttles:

"Between JFK and La Guardia and vice-versa

1. Bus*: $11 The New York Airport Service bus provides service between JFK & La Guardia. For schedule information and reservations visit www.nyairportservice.com

Between JFK and Newark and vice-versa

1. Shuttle*: $27. The Airporter provides service between Newark and JFK. For schedule information and reservations visit www.goairporter.com"

I have no experience with either of these shuttles, other than knowing that airport shuttles are sometimes slow and meandering and are subject to the same traffic woes as any other vehicle, but the price is pretty good compared to what a taxi would cost.

Good luck to your dad!

I would fly in the night before and get to one of the JFK hotels - this way there is no traffic to deal with.

If not, I would fly into LGA, cab it, and allow 3 hours (for traffic and security). Also-what is his plan if his STL-NYC flight is delayed?

I'd actually try another tack - find a flight to an airport that connects to JFK. For example, maybe he should fly into Boston and then out of Boston to JFK. He may be able to find a connecting flight that doesn't cost much more than flying direct. I think that'd be easier!

Two questions/comments:

Is the flight out of JFK a done deal? He could probably fly out of Chicago, too.

Why does he have to fly to EWR or LGA? Are there no flights from STL to JFK? If it's a matter of price, I would bet the fare difference doesn't compare to the time and cost of transferring from LGA to JFK.

Dial7.com car/transfer service

should be able to hire a sedan between airports for less than $50.00
As low as $35.00 plus any tolls, and tip.

Make sure he has plenty of layover time to account for the transfer, NYC traffic, etc!
