Nutty iPad photographers.

Last time I watched the fireworks at MK a young girl pulled out her phone as the fireworks started and began recording. No big deal except she has a bright light on. The phone was right next to my ear! I said "are you going to video the whole show?" She said "yes". I held my hand up in front of her camera and said "No, you can't shine that light in my face." Guess I was tired. I had reached my limit in rude for the day. Lol
She put her phone away.

I can understand that could be annoying, but it sounds like you were kind of rude putting your hand in her shot. You could have just asked her to lower the brightness...:rolleyes1

Using them as a camera though still make you look like a tool.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Whatever. If I'm a tool because I don't have the money to own the iphone, the ipad, a digital camera and can't afford to go to Disney multiple times a year, then you're a rude jerk.

I don't take pics or video much any way, so you shouldn't be bothered much by me.

What worked for me when I was behind an iPad offender at The Lion King in AK, was taking a digital photo of what I was seeing, and showing it to the guy. He put the thing away. Donna

Great solution Donna!!!! I love that you solved the problem!!

You look like an idiot taking photos with an iPad when you could buy a $40 point and shoot camera that will take MUCH better photos.
I couldn't imagine lugging a heavy iPad around the parks all day.

You guys crack me up! :rotfl2: A "heavy" iPad? You look like a "tool"? Seriously? Have you looked at the outfits people wear in Disney, and I should be worried because I am taking a picture on a "heavy" iPad??? (and I'm not even being mean about how people dress in Disney… but where else on the face of the earth do you see families dressed in matching bright neon green tee shirts on a daily basis??)

Disney has made it nearly impossible- and certainly very inconvenient- to go to their parks without some form of internet-accessible technology. I own a laptop. That's it. OH, wait, I have a tracfone but it lives in the van, as it's for emergencies only. I do not own a $400 phone that requires a $100 a month plan. Not happening in this lifetime. I WILL be "lugging" around a "heavy" iPad that I borrow from a friend so I have a hope and a prayer of being able to access my ADRs, FP+, and do some FP+ shifting so I can hopefully enjoy some of the time at Disney instead of standing in 40 minute lines for stupid attractions all day. IF I choose to take a picture with said iPad (highly unlikely), I will make sure I am not blocking someone else's precious view. After all, why should I take a picture when you want to?!

And if we want to discuss looking like a nerd and a tool, we could talk about those who walk around all day, staring at their smart phone, missing the world and life happening around them. :confused3 OR those oh-so-considerate folks standing/sitting next to me, yakking away on their phones, giving me the precious opportunity to listen to all their opinions, nasty language, and private business… but we won't, because THAT would be rude… :rolleyes2

To be fair, other ridiculous looking behavior or rude behavior does NOT negate the issues of ipad use. In other words...using an ipad as a camera looks ridiculous and can be rude AND people wearing matching neon shirts also look ridiculous, and so on. So your entire argument is invalid.

Ipads are heavy. We have one but it doesn't go to the parks with us because it's heavy and unweildy. They are also very expensive, and we only have one because DH gets it through his work.

I also do not own a $400 smartphone with a $100 a month plan. I own a $120 off-the-shelf smartphone with a $60/month pay as you go plan. Only a few dollars more expensive than DH's $80 old school clam shell phone with $50 a month pay-as-you-go plan. IF you want a smart phone, there are many less expensive alternatives to iphones and pricey contracts.

You could look into getting a used ipod touch with wifi off of ebay for accessing MDE. Then you don't have to pay for any service.

In closing...if everyone were a bit considerate about those around them (and not hold up their phones, cameras, ipads, talk on their phones, put their kids on their shoulders etc) it would be a much happier world.

I don't think you're getting the humor of it. Did you read the original post? It's not about money. It's about rude people blocking your view as well as looking ridiculous. If you don't have an iPad, why are you offended by the this topic?

And BTW no one said anyone was a tool because they couldn't afford something. Read the post again.

Now this actually is not a bad idea, at least a glance around to see who has what with them!
I'm dead serious when I tell you I HAVE asked people on front of me "are you planning on putting that child on your shoulders when this parade/show/fireworks starts??" After waiting an hour for Hoopla (which turned out to be the LAST one) and getting burned by that, I learned my lesson.

The larger iPads are much more fragile than smart phones or smaller tablets. They are also very easily ruined by water. I'd never borrow an iPad to take to a theme park, especially one where afternoon thunderstorms and drenching rain are common.

I wonder how many people take iPads and ruin them? Probably more than you think. Even with a case on it, the screen is easily broken if you drop it. I know this from experience.

I feel like there must be something wrong with the camera in my iPad lol. It's two years old. Have the cameras improved since then? I'm pretty proficient with a DSLR and happy with my iPhone snapshots 99% of the time. But the iPad camera sucks. Even if I set something up in ideal lighting conditions, my subject is perfectly still, and I use the timer (so there's no motion or shaking on my part), I still get an extremely grainy slightly out of focus picture. Video quality is equally as bad. No way would I ever use that as my camera for vacation memories.

I think the iPaders should consider an iPod touch. I'm tired of the $100 a month I don't wanna smart phone argument being thrown around. (By the way if you're paying $100 for one line: switch networks. Their overcharging you)

There are wifi usable devices that aren't as large that can be used to access the internet. Heck a used smart phone with NO SERVICE can be put on wifi to get online.

Needing internet is not an excuse for holding an iPad over your head to take photo or video and blocking the view of people behind you.

Hmm...Even $50 or $20 a month is far too much for me to spend on any kind of a plan. I have my "dumb" cellphone that only does talk and text that I only paid $20 for with a full month of airtime when I bought it at walmart. And I use it rarely. My airtime for a full year was only $65.
I also won't be spending the money on an ipod touch since I already have an ipod that 6+ years old and still works perfectly fine after replacing the battery once (generic battery and did it myself).

See, I'm cheap and have to be since I don't make much money. I have my 7" wi-fi only tablet (not apple brand) that I've had for over a year and I carry and use it every day. Even in my purse. So, it doesn't seem all that heavy and bulky to me. Even with the cheap case I have it in. Oh, and it will be covered with a ziplock bag for those wet times that always happens at WDW. :)

No, I don't see the humor in calling people "tools".
I don't own an ipad, but do have a tablet that I will have with me and will be using to take the few pics I will be taking. Of course, if you only have something against those using iPads and not other tablets, then you're still a jerk because you're still discriminating against people who can afford them.
I will look "ridiculous" and like a "tool" if I have to because I'm not spending the money on a camera that I will next to never use when I have a perfectly good one on my tablet. I won't be spending the money on a smart phone with any kind of a plan because it's an extra monthly expense I can't afford. I won't be spending the money on an ipod touch since I have a perfectly good old ipod.

Personally, I really don't care what people think about me. But I always try to keep to myself, keep low-key, say my pleases, thank-yous and excuse mes. I always try to be considerate of others when I'm out and about. I also don't snicker, give dirty looks to people and call them tools because they're using/doing something that I think might be silly.

I must be wicked strong, because I don't consider iPads to be heavy at all. Really though, I understand that some people can be rude taking pictures although I don't see it as an iPad specific thing. Flash photography on dark rides makes my blood boil. I 100% agree with the opinion on spending too much time on smart phones and taking pictures is not for me. I try to live in the moment and actually enjoy what is going on around me.

I personally don't bring my iPad to the parks, but I can see how it might make sense for some people. Apple has done a good job with their accessibility features for example.

I have to shake my head when I see some post about someone else's rude behavior and then brag about how they responded with behavior that was at least as rude. Calling people "tools" or saying they look "ridiculous" because they do something differently than you seems to me to be bullying. Just my 2 cents.

"YES" to all of the above. I looked into what "smart" phones will cost. Around here, with any of the servers, it's $50 a month for service and then $50 per phone. I didn't spend that much ($100) last YEAR on my cellphone service, but then again, it's a "dumb" phone and lives in the van.

Regarding the ruggedness of iPads… we have 2 at school. They have been used regularly (as in multiple users daily) by children in grades K-5 for the past 3 years. Both are fine- no cracks, scratches, or breakage. I think I can manage to keep one safe, in one piece and in working order, stashed in a ziplock bag while in my backpack while I am at Disney World.

If you don't mind the weight and size, have at it. Just be mindful of those around you when taking pictures.

And as others have pointed out, any wifi capable device will work even if you have no service plan at all. There are economical ways around needing the latest and greatest device.

I always try to be considerate of others around me when at WDW- and honestly, we go frequently enough that I don't take pictures anymore. I would LOVE to have a wifi capable device to use for the whole FP+ debacle but have no idea what to look for (I am techno-stupid… possible the only person in the world who doesn't text, I don't use a contact list or know how to add to it, etc… really, it isn't important to me). Can you make some suggestions as to what I should be looking for? Do they really not need service plans to work?

This topic should be about tablets in general, not iPads. In pictures taken during parades, there are a lot more variety of tablets being used than just iPads. So why the bias?

But the bigger thing is that this isn't a new issue with technology. When the DSLRs and handheld cameras first came out there were lots of complaints of how bright the screens were and how it made things difficult to see. Even earlier people complained about video cameras and how silly folks looked with the early large ones. And then when video cameras got smaller people complained about the viewing screens being too bright.

But in all cases people got used to the devices being used. The new technology became commonplace and people came to ignore it. The same will happen with tablets, it's what happens. In the meantime, people aren't nutty, or tools, or ridiculous. They are just doing something different that you aren't accustomed to seeing. It's as much about all if us adapting to the technology as it is to users of the technology to adapt to using it politely. It will happen, it isn't going away after all, but insulting people on boards like this doesn't help and is just as rude.

When the Kodak Brownie was first introduced there was a similar reaction from the non-users. But the difference I think between other cameras and the tablet/smartphone use today is that people generally still held all those other kinds of cameras at their own eye level (older ones at waist level). With tablets and smartphones people hold them over their head and that's when they really become obtrusive and get in people's way. That's why so many photographers really hate the things when they get used as cameras.
