nut butter in checked luggage?

Hello! I will be ordering groceries from Garden Grocer for our April trip. My kids eat a lot of almond butter and like a certain kind, which GG doesn't stock. The kind they like is in a plastic jar, and I'm debating packing an unopened container of it in my checked bag, but it makes me a bit nervous. Has anyone packed this sort of thing? It would be unpleasant to have it somehow split open, but I guess it shouldn't, and I can pack it in some ziploc bags or something. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated... When we went to DL a couple years ago, I ordered almond butter from a grocery supplier there and my kids didn't like it, so just I ate it, but certainly didn't finish it and didn't bring it home either, because it was in a glass jar. Thanks in advance to anyone able to answer!

Wrap it some bubble wrap, and then put it in a couple of ziploc bags. Pack it in the middle of the suitcase, and it should be fine. Even if it breaks, which is highly unlikely, it won't make a mess. It will be bulky, but if you finish it while you are there, or just don't want to take it home, you will have extra room in your suitcase for souvenirs.

Yes, we fly with it all the time. One of our suitcases is usually set aside for food items.

There are a few ways you can do it...any bublle wrapped insulated mailing package can work fine, but we usually pack things like that into tupperware containers. The containers can also be used as bowls during our stay.

Also realize that your luggage may be opened and searched. While this can happen at any time, it seems the consistency of stuff like nut butter is very similar to some material that the TSA scans for.

I've brought bottles of wine home from Europe and down to Florida for our last cruise and never had them break. I always put them in a plastic bag and wrap them in clothes, I've never bothered with bubble wrap.

I would put the almond butter a zip lock and wrap it in some clothes in the middle of your suitcase and it will be fine.

Thank you very much, everyone!! I feel better about packing it now and think I will go ahead and do it :) And I guess it won't really matter if my bag is searched...

Let me second that comment that it's a likely reason to get your suitcase inspected by TSA. So - you might want to make sure it's easy to find and see.

Each time I've had a jar of peanut butter in my suitcase - I find one of those little notes that tells me my bag was inspected. I no longer bring it.....

Out of curiosity, did you mention this to GG?

Over the years, there have been items that we use religiously on our vacations that GG never offered. Each time I have written to them to make a suggestion about adding an item, they have actually added it. I'm guessing they don't do this with all suggestions, but something like almond butter, that is becoming much more frequently purchased, might be something they would consider adding.

Just a thought! Since our last WDW trip we have begun using almond butter, and it certainly would be nice to not lug it in my suitcase! :-)

I would ask Garden Grocer if they can get it for you. They have done this for us upon request. Just because it is not on the site doesn't mean they cannot get it. ;) Of course, there is no reason that you couldn't put it in a checked bag.

Yep. I often fly home with one or two bottles of wine. I buy too much because I don't want to have to go shopping again during my trip...but then I wind up being too busy to drink all the wine I bought!

Wrighter and maleficent dragon, that's a good suggestion, thank you, but it's president's choice blue menu almond butter that they like, and I think it's only available in Canada. GG has marantha almond butter, which I like, but unfortunately my kids don't...

Oh good gosh yes, I'd pack it. My BIL makes jam when he's here and packs 8-12 jelly jars of it to take home with him. He puts it in his checked bag and they usually inspect it and leave the little note. No biggie. They just wrap it in ziplocs and clothing.
