We have just found out that our 6yr old probably has a nut allergy (spent last evening in A&E). :guilty:

How aware are the restaurants to this problem, as we leave for our first trip to Florida in a weeks time?

By the way she’s ok now, just left with a bit of a fat lip!!

Thanks,
Dave

to be honest.. Disney are used to dealing with differnt allergies.. but you may find it hard when you are eating at general restaurants in the parks.. there are peanuts EVERYWHERE in all sorts of things. Sometimes the only kids food you can get is PB & J sandwiches..
However - I know people who have had allergies and disney have been incredibly accomodating. I would ring customer services and speak to them about it.

The americans do not seem to have our fear of nuts regarding children... but they must have allergies like us surely? In my DS5 class at school.. out of 27 in his year.. at least 4 have severe nut allergies!

 I just happened to see this on my way by.

I am from Canada. My son has a severe peanut allergy and he is now 21 years old. We found out when he was 10 months old.

He has travelled at least 12 times to Florida to WDW and also has been on 2 Disney Cruises. He has also travelled to Holland. So you can see that he has not let it keep him away from what he wants to do.

I don't agree with SammieG's comment about the Americans not having a fear of peanut allergy or allergies in general. It is a major problem over here too. We have found them for the most part to be very familiar and very helpful about the problems people with allergies face.

Most restaurants are very knowledgeable and will make accomodations or can advise you about what to avoid.

Feel free to PM me if I can help with any questions.

I hope that you will have a wonderful and safe vacation at WDW.

My DW has many allergies including nuts. All places we have visited in Florida have been most helpful in our 3 visits. In most places, especially in WDW just mention that there is an allergy and they bring our the head chef. The only place we had a problem was on the internal flights when they give peanuts as a snack and the dust caused her a few problems.

Don't worry I'm sure you will have a great time. :cool1:

We knew our daughter was allergic. She had had a reaction prior to our trip to disney. We carried an epi pen and thought we were prepared. On our first day of our trip last year, we had been in the MK all day. We were finally leaving and were hungry, so we quick grabbed a bag of cashews from a stand. (DD is not allergic to nuts) just sesame.

Anyway, instantly she reacted to what she was eating, but it was different from the first time, so we were unsure. We gave her the epi shot, but since we had never had to give her the shot before, we didn't know what to do next. At this point we were trying to get in line to take the ferry back to our resort. While on the ferry an E.M.T. asked if he could look in her throat, because she was obviously having a reaction. He said it looked ok but to call 911 and have them meet us at the resort. I did so and as soon as we got to the resort the ambulance was there. She needed 3 more shots and a hospital stay.

She spent 4 hours in the hospital and they let her go.

The reason Im telling you all of this is because I've never felt so helpless in my life. Here we were in the middle of all these people and didn't know where to go or what to do for help. I didn't know that after an attack, we still had to go to the hospital. Now I know and am prepared. Next time I will know where first aid is. But I don't know if this would have helped since time was an issue.

But be careful. We went back to the stand where we purchased the cashews and there was no information on the ingredients. (We shouldn't have let her have them in the first place, but again, shes not allergic to nuts.)

To play it safe, when you make your reservations at the restaurants, tell them someone has an allergy and when you are at the restaurant, they will send someone out beore you order to speak with you. They are really good with that. And as for the park. Just dont be stupid like me.

Cruizin Kroezes, sorry, I didnt mean to say that they didnt exist in the US.. of course it must be a problem - however in the UK, it is advised that no nuts especially peanuts are given to under 5's. My american friends find this amazing as all their kids eat PB&J from an early age and that would just not happen here in the UK.

Of course, I am generalising again, as there will be some people in the UK who do give their kids peanut butter under 5 - but its not a common thing here at all.
Personally, I find it odd that two cultures can be so different in their way of thoughts.
