Nurses comment - a little taken back

:thumbsup2 Yes I was going to post something very similiar this morning, it's quite possible the OPs daughter would have gasped either way because of the number.

Good God!!!

What is wrong with 118 lbs at 5'4"? At that height the ideal weight for a small framed woman is 114-127 lbs. This child is perfectly normal (probably even a little on the thin side-I would try to fatten her up) :confused3

I don't think ToriLammy was saying there is anything wrong about that weight for that height.
Just that these days, teen girls are used to hearing about celebrities who are 90-105 pounds, so hearing she was 118 pounds would sound big in comparison to what the media is reporting the celebrities are. (Not saying it is big, but if you are comparing to weights that are unreasonable low for most people, it does seem big.)

Right Sue - what I meant was either way - whether the nurse said it outloud or the child saw it she was probably going to gasp. The op said her child gasped, but what the op doesn't know for sure is if the child would have had the same reaction had the nurse said it outloud. I'm saying she probably didn't gasp because of the way she found out her weight. Nothing wrong with 118 at 5'4 - that's a perfect weight but we're adults and we know that, a 14 year old looks at it differently. Like Sue said.

Why would someone ask what their weight is and then expect somone to write it down?!(or show them the calculator) If I asked a question I would expect an oral answer. I would think at 14 she wouldn't have asked with her mother in the room if she didn't want her to know.

Heck, Im 41 and my mom goes with me to the doctor all the time and yes, she comes in the room with me, BIG DEAL!!! And I go with her to hers too! Sometimes they do look at me when discussing her medical issues with her and she always tells them "She wouldn't be here if I didn't want her to know"

OP, I would talk to her bosses about that.

To the people who think I'm over reacting....please understand, I did not get angry with the nurse, I only stated how I felt about how she handled the weight issue.

If my DD was overweight, I'd want her to hear it from a medical professional.

If my DD is at an average or within normal weight, then I want her to hear that too.

I just think as many of you have mentioned, that with these lollipop celebrities promoting thinness and crash dieting, we need to be realistic with our kids and give it to them straight. I do appreciate she was thinking of my DD and her privacy, but she did ask in front of me so it wasn't an issue, but to my DD, she thought she made it one. My DD does think over 100lbs is heavy for someone her age :confused3

I see no need to have her reprimanded for something small like a difference of opinion of how this should have been handled.

Thank you all for you're replies.

I haven't read all of the posts but I just want to respond that in my kids dr's office it is the nurse that does the weighing, but it is the dr's responsibility to say if the child is under/over weight or just on the right curve.
