Now I've "Seen" Everything

One of my coworkers mentioned today that perhaps the couple was from a part of the world where that is considered okay.. (topless beaches, etc.)...hmmmmm. And the couple were definitely not kids......30's, I would guess. It was very strange. They seemed "normal" otherwise......sounds like obsessive/compulsive behavior to me.

He also seemed to take some measures to "hide" himself, which means he was probably aware that it wasn't the norm for the U.S.

I think after once, I would have gone over on change #2 and pointed out the restrooms and changing areas. But then, I am often told I am too bold lol

Ok, I can understand the "European" part of the excuse as I've seen this myself at WDW, but why 5 times? Did he have some sort of OCD and couldn't stay in one swimsuit for prolonged periods of time?? That's just plain weird. :sad2:

Okay okay..next time I'll use the restroom. Sorry.

My mother reports that when I was a child I would not stay in a wet swimsuit after getting out of my baby pool. I would be happily splashing until I stepped out of my pool for any reason. Then I would have a fit until she changed me into something dry. (This was in the days before swimmie diapers and we didn't have a clothes dryer just a line.) Afterwards I would happily jump back into my pool. I have no recollection of this so I must trust her memory. :)

Perhaps this man never outgrew the same compulsion. I feel some compassion for the guy. Soggy shorts aren't comfy.

A British DVCers input :teeth:
We dont usually change in public - we are quite prudish too! and most men here where swim shorts not speedos. However when British women go to Europe eg. Spain, Canaries, etc it is quite common to go topless.(though I peronally wouldnt) ;)

Well IMHO there are worse things that he could have been doing for sure. I really don't care about things like that my kids wouldn't care either and for the person that said when in Rome that is opening a can of worms for people when we are there we act like Canadiands not Americans and wouldn't dream of acting like anyone other than what we are no matter what. We are happy being who we are and doing the things we normally do in life and won't change it because we are visiting another place that is just how it should be wetehr you are an American visiting Canada or Europe etc.

The fact is, public nudity (indecency) is illegal in this country. That is where the "when in Rome" comes in. When you are visiting another country, you are expected to follow its laws.

I believe that you should try to follow the mores of the culture you are in, not the one you were raised in. It's only polite.

When in Rome!

There ARE exceptions. ;) When we were in the French Riviera and almost all the women were topless, I wasn't about to follow their lead! DH even offered a bribe, but he knew that was one I wouldn't take him up on!! :rotfl2:

Why not???? (grin) :wave2:

Give me a break! This thread creeped me out. The defense of this creep is even more disgusting.

This guy is a total freak/pervert and I would have been at the lifeguard station or calling security at the first event! U.S. is NOT Europe and women sunbathing topless in a country known for that can not be compared to some ADULT male pervert seeing the need to change his suit (5 times!!) at a public pool where everyone knows is built for children in the UNITED STATES.

No defense for the freak from me...this is exactly the type of stuff that sociopaths do (no regard for the people around them) and of course bank on that people will be too embarrassed/scared to say anything. :confused3

Charles, I would certainly expect you to remain as you are - Canadians are lovely people and would never stand out anywhere doing anything illegal in America or anywhere else! Our mores and laws are so similar I can't see that being an issue.

and yep - I would go topless either!!! I guess what I'm trying to say is that we should respect the other's culture and while combining that with our customs and habits - avoid those customs that may disturb others. Respect each other is all I'm asking for. Thank you Lori for helping clarify!

This individual was reportedly spending the day at the pool with either his wife or female companion and did make some effort (albeit unsuccessful) to be discreet. This is a far cry from being "exactly the stuff sociopaths do" nor is it indicative of predatory behavior.
I think it's pretty obvious that the individual is from a different culture and thought nothing improper of his behavior. And while his behavior was unequivocally improper for WDW it seems that the best resolution would have been to politely inform him. No doubt he would have appreciated it.
I also find it somewhat humorous that the OP was so offended yet rather than either turning her head (as the others did) she managed to keep a tally on the suit changes! (LOL)
Again... I do not believe his behavior was appropriate for WDW but I also don't think anyone will be scarred for life from this.

Sue thank you for the kind words we feel the same way about our neighbours to the south mind you if the media had anything to do with it they would paint you all as gun toting yahoos that wouldn't hesitate to lay somone out for looking at you wrong but we all know that isn't the truth. IF the guy was standing behind the chair trying not to mae a scene it is as has been said here likeley his cultural upbringing that this is a natrual occurance nothig wrong with that at all. I remember a big uproar from the older generation like my grandparents when teh law was passed to allow women to go topless in public here ot just on the beach but everywhere. It is just something that is allowed in Ontario and accepted by most now.

While staying at the BWV, I used the pool (Luna) a few times last week. There was a couple there and the man did something absolutely lewd and obnoxious (not to mention illegal) - every time he got out of the pool, he got behind his pool chair and proceeded to change into new trunks....and the chair gave him.....and us...scant privacy. He did this 5 times! I was so shocked, I was speechless and I think everyone else was just trying to ignore him. One older gentleman's jaw dropped and he yelled over something like 'this is a family resort, you know!' He was out of the lifeguard's view. A lady beside me said she was going to alert Security, but I left before they arrived, if they did. Has anyone ever heard of anything so crude? Ugh!!!!!

Darn I MISSED it? Why do all the fun things happen at BWV when I am home?

Seriously, although I think it was inappropriate and out of line and maybe even weird a naked body doesn't upset me. I'd rather see that then some of the folks who make out passionately in public with their clothing ON. Go back to your room if you can't stop groping!

Totally agree Par8hed, well said! If something upset me greatly I'd either say something or turn away, I wouldn't keep looking.
