Now I am worried

It's about this huge black bear that visits my garden gate where the neighbours keep their trash. I have told them not to stick out trash until garbage day but they don't heed me. Last night at 12:30 a.m. the bear was back and made a terrific racket as usual. He tore the neighbour's gate off (Mine is adjoined and I'm lucky he didn't rip my gate). He may rip my gate off in the days to come. Luckily or not, my gate is broken and doesn't latch so he just has to push it to come in. He won't have to rip it off.

My DS22 drove in just after the bear left. Neighbours came over and tokd him the bear was still onthe street. I couldn't see anything from my front window.

Why, oh why, did neighbours have to leave trash in their cans. I have a little dog and she was barking like crazy at the sound of the bear.

I am worried that the bear will bring down my fence and gate.

Does your town or county have an ordinance about trash? If they are breaking it you can try to report them, see if that helps.

Someone hit and killed a bear on one of our roads a few days ago. The bears are becoming more and more visible in our area too...

Sorry you neighbors are contributing to your problem.

Maybe having their property destroyed will give them a clue. My parents had two sets of bird feeders destroyed before they finally decided that perhaps they shouldn't have them out...

Trash would be the *least* of my worries. If the bears become habituated to getting food near houses they may decide to hurt anyone who interferes with their ability to get that food. I know black bears are not usually interested in people, but if you were to surprise a black bear, even one that is used to people, he could easily hurt you out of fear.

Can you call your local animal control? They would know who to call to remove the bear(s) from the neighborhood (assuming that you don't live in a bear habitat, like the Rocky Mountains.)

Keep your doors locked with a dead bolt!!! My parents were away from their home (thank heavens) and a black bear got into their house though an unlocked back door (housesitter left it unlocked by mistake). Bear did a lot of damage, not the least of which was opening the fridge and spreading the contents around the house.

Can you call animal control and have the bear captured and relocated? That's what happened in the case above.

Amen, I was just thinking your neighbots have a death wish and what could of happened to your son had he gotten there sooner. Call animal control and for heavens sake slap your neighbors or something.

There have been instances of black bears up here at the lake and locked doors don't hinder them at all.. In one case a bear removed an a/c unit from a window to gain entry and then was so furious that there was no food inside he completely destroyed the inside of the camp: tore down cabinets; knocked over the stove; pulled the fridge over; etc.. They are very, very powerful (and determined) animals..

To the OP: You need to call the town; animal control; someone - because these people are not only endangering themselves, but you and your family as well..:sad2:

We had a bad problem with them the year before last - even wandering around during the day looking for food.. Last year I think there was only one sighting.. Who knows what this year will bring..

Hope you can find a solution - SOON!!! :goodvibes
