A bit more info to add to the discussion above (with credit to @rteetz for the assistance). Granted the 2018 course could be different, but below is the course map from 2017.

The race did start at the MK parking lot, but note they didn’t use a large chunk of World Drive, especially the part closest to MK. Generally speaking, the MK area is going to be clear by EMM time. But I’d still build in some extra time just to be safe (especially if you’re staying somewhere where your route to MK may be impacted).

The races honestly shouldn't impact your trip very much, if at all. Sunday morning traffic around MK will be tough but still very manageable. We did the 10k last year (the Saturday race) and then had to drive to Tampa for a wedding that day. We were staying at the Poly, ran the race, showered, got picked up by the rental car company, drove back to the Poly and then left around lunchtime and had no issues whatsoever. The race starts at 5:30am so by the time you get there for EMM most (if not all) runners should be off and running. Like everyone said I'd leave a little earlier so to be sure you can get around some of the road blocks but I'm sure they'll have plenty of parking available for when you get there. I definitely wouldn't cancel because of the 10k.
If your party is already complaining about waking up early, they're going to complain no matter what and if waking up 30 minutes earlier is that tough for them then EMM in general probably isn't for them. Once they get there and are enjoying very little waits for some headliners, they'll totally forget about having to wake up a little earlier.

Last time they went (without me) I had arranged 2 PPO ADRs and though they are fuzzy headed (not complaining but hard to get going - it's a time thing) they thoroughly enjoyed being there early.

How bad is the traffic on this day?

We are checking out of POFQ on 11/4 and checking into BWV. My plan was to Uber over to BWV with our bags and then take the boat over to DHS. Will roads be closed around this area?

Allow POFQ to transport your luggage for you. Then just head to DHS and give yourself extra time as runners are running from DHS to Epcot by way of the Boardwalk.

I did that last trip and my bags weren't available until about 4 pm. If we want to swim we would like to have our bags. I may just let POFQ transport them though and go straight from POFQ to DHS. Especially with the race.

You could always put suits in a park bag. They aren't overly bulky usually.

We go bagless. I'm sure we will decide the night before how we want to handle this.

For the Star Wars half- the start was at MK parking lot but anyone parking had to park at Epcot and shuttle over to the start line. So not sure how much of an issue parking would be at MK. Definitely leave enough time to get there in case of roads being closed.
