November 5th 2011 Eastern on the Magic

Well, some are sharing their after cruise plans and thought I would take a stab. If some remember, we are driving down straight for about 12 hours (on Friday). However, to get back, we are driving back to Hilton Head to stay on DVC points that would have otherwise expired. We've also never visited Savannah GA so we plan to stop there. Then of course, drive back home on Sunday (about 5-6 hr drive) I've been a little envious of the flight option that we refuse to spend the money on, but look at the bright side of visiting 2 places we have never been to before :yay:

Gma Kathy: Thanks for the pictures of the ship. My kids loved them. Took some prodding to get DH to look at them, as he wants it to be a surprise. Forget that for me, I have researched a read and researched and read. I bought the newest Passporters book for cruising and read it in about 2 days and read allears.net all the time!:rolleyes1

Just wanted to let you all know that I just saw on the website www.vinow.com that the Disney Magic will be Docked at CB which is the Crown Bay dock in St Thomas. Much better than tendering!!!:worship:

Jetflyer: Excellent news! I cannot stand to tender. It's one thing for me to not feel well I couldn't imagine if the kids did too. Thanks for sharing.

That is GREAT news. I hate tendering.
It must of been a recent decision to go there because we called DCL and asked about tendering and I saw it on line just 3 weeks ago that we were tendering.

Crown Bay Dock is West of town a bit. Usually Holland America and their Navy ships dock there. I believe its a bit over a mile to Havensight Mall. Which is the large shopping area. Taxis are about $3 per person to take you there or walk it if you want.
The Sky Tram is across from the Havensite mall for anyone who might be interested in doing that attraction on their own.

Thanks for giving us the update!!! Thats really awesome news!!

Hi everyone,

What a crazy busy day!! First day of school (or first week of school) is always busy, but the boys loved their first day, and they like their teachers, so all is off to a good start. :thumbsup2

I finally had time to read through the posts from the weekend. Sounds like everyone had a good weekend. :)

Well, with the exception of an inservice day at school once between now and November, the next time our boys will have time off school is Nov 5 - 12! :cool1:

I sent out revised copies of all the lists today. So if you didnt receive a new CM list please let me know.

Kathy

Thanks for sending this out, Kathy! I got the list and all the info (stateroom, names, ages) for our family looks great. I'm just waiting for a free upgrade to the Walt Disney Suite... :lmao: Oh, what wishful thinking!!! LOL!!!!! :rotfl:

So I checked the DCL website and they have several more room available than the last time I checked. Does anyone have an explanation? Is it they have opened up rooms that they placed on hold (if they even do that) or did lots of people cancel? Boy, it is tempting to upgrade. We are on deck 6 and their are 2 porthole rooms available in the forward, that are separated by only 1 room. (we don't have adjoining rooms anyway) Although we did choose mid ship due to less motion in that area. (Kids and their gma's 1st cruise..ever)

I think there is a period between when you have to pay your balance and when cancellation fees actually set in. So, it's common to see rooms open up just before the window where cancellation fees set in for people who decide last minute to cancel without penalty. So, I'm guessing those are the rooms you are seeing. As for mid-ship vs. foward, we've stayed in both locations. I think it might be a little more stable mid-ship, but truly, it really just depends on the seas. The cruise where we were in the Forward, the seas were SO calm the entire cruise... so we felt no motion... because there was no motion! But, we've been mid-ship in rough seas (where the captain actually had to announce through the entire ship to hold onto railings when walking and be very careful), and when it's like that, you can definitely feel motion mid-ship!! But, I think in just normal/typical seas (a little waves, but mostly calm), you really feel nothing mid-ship, and maybe a tad wave here or there forward. BUT, I am not bothered one bit by motion, so maybe it also really depends on the person and how sensitive they are to motion.

So, did you decide to upgrade?

We have the Disney Visa Rewards card and use it to pay for everything (and pay it off each month). We've been saving up our points for the last 2 years and should have about $800 worth (at least) by the time of the cruise. We are going to put that on our on board credit account so with that, plus the $50 for charging the cruise with the card, then $200 from the TA, we'll have about $1000 for our on board credit---Thank Goodness!! Or we would be in big trouble with this new alcohol policy.

That is so cool you do this to save up for On Board Credit on the ship!! There is nothing MORE fun to spend than free money!! And, that is a lot you will have to spend. :) It is amazing, though, how fast you can rack up your on board account!! But, as you saw, Disney cancelled the "new" alcohol policy, and it's back to what it was, so luckily, you don't have to use a big chunk of your $1,000 on board credit on alcohol now, and you can bring your own.

Kathy (lovestorun) i think you are right Emma and Tyler will be considered tweens! There is a tween club onboard,"The Edge", i am hoping Emma will want to go, what about Tyler?

Well it is back to school for my kids tomorrow, Josh is starting 3rd grade and Emma is starting middle school:scared1:

Good luck to all the kids going back to school tomorrow:)

Tyler definitely wants to go to the Tween Club (The Edge), but he also wants to go to the Lab (I think because that is all he knows). But, I found out that the 11-12 year olds can choose to go to the Lab instead of the Edge, but if they do that, they'll have to wear a wrist band. And, if they get a wrist band, they cannot go to the Edge because the Edge the kids check themselves in and out, so they don't have wrist bands. So, what Tyler said he'll try is go to the Edge and the Lab apparently has certain times each day where the kids from the Edge can come into the Lab, and he said he'd do that. But, from what I've read on the main Dis Boards is that the kids new to the Edge usually are unsure before they get on the ship, but once they are on the ship and go into the Edge for the first time, they have no desire to go back to the Lab because there are so many fun things to do at the Edge, plus all the kids in the Edge are their age.

So, they do have the option to do both... but I have a feeling Tyler will want to be at the Edge. We'll see!

How was Josh and Emma's first day at school, and Emma's first day in middle school??? She must be in 6th grade, then, right? Tyler is in 5th, but he is a November birthday, so that is why he's in 5th and almost 11 years old... just the birthday cut off thing. I think it's good for him, though, especially size wise... he's small for his age (just a genetic thing... lots of small people in our family), so if he were in 6th grade right now, he'd look REALLY small for his grade. So, he fits in better size-wise with 9 and 10 year olds. But, you never know.... he may have a big growth spurt coming on sometime soon!! :)

Kathy,
Great photos. They look so excited to go, bandaids and all:lmao:
Hope they had a great first day.

Kathy

Thanks!!

Well, I think that about catches me up!!

Kathy

Kathy,
Thanks i got it! The Sloth eats fruits and veggies, she likes her spinach a lot. But its the grapes and cantaloupe that really get her moving (for a sloth that is). You are right, i think zoo's have developed alot. I know from experience how very spoiled these animals are! Another reason to love disney, their animals are beyond well cared for, they are the envy of many zoo's with all of their resources and care givers! Disney is really amazing about their animal care, and a big portion of Disney property is set aside for natural wildlife habitat (if you ever notice native wildlife somewhere it shouldn't be, Disney relocates them to the wildlife habitat they maintain.) They also participate in tons of conservation projects. I know, I know, Disney has thoroughly indoctrinated me. LOL.:lovestruc
Kathy: I have seen all of these animals at DAK except the Addax. (the fun of working there you can ride the safari over and over, but some are also on the trail walk) I also worked with Addra gazelle (beautiful) but i don't have any pics i would be allowed to post. So you must look them up on your own.
Alyssa

Alyssa,

I loved all the photos of the animals!!! That is so cool you get to work with them and that you were a zoo keeper! We have a nice zoo here in Seattle... called, the Woodland Park Zoo. In fact, Tyler, my oldest son, has an attachement to the zoo because the day he was born, Nov 3, 2000, a baby elephant at the Woodland Park Zoo was born AT the zoo that same day!! It was so funny because I was in labor all day long at the hospital, and we had the TV on. On the TV the news kept breaking throughout the day giving updates on the mama elephants labor. :rotfl2: And, here I was in labor FEELING like I was about to give birth to an elephant! :lmao: Anyway, the baby elephant was born just a few hours before Tyler was born.... she weighed 300 lbs!!!! GOOD thing Tyler was only 7 lbs!! :rotfl: Anyway, every year on Tyler's birthday, we would go to the zoo to celebrate "Hansa's" (baby elephant's name) birthday, too, and we'd go see her every year on Nov 3. BUT, it was so so sad because about 4 years ago, Hansa suddenly got very very sick, and long story short, she died. :sad1: It was so sad, and actually, very hard on Tyler because Hansa was his birthday buddy, and he loves animals, too. But, we have a book the zoo had on sale all about Hansa the baby elephant (we bought it when Hansa and Tyler were just 1 year old), so Tyler keeps that book in his room. So, that is our zoo story. :) A bittersweet story, though.

That is GREAT news! I don't mind tendering at all, but I do like prefer to dock over tendering only because it's so much easier and faster to get on an off the ship as you please. So, this is great news. :) Thanks for letting us know!!

Love all those great pictures. Looks like everyone was having a great time.
My favorite is the monkey towel animal too.:goodvibes

Sometimes its fun to leave out some sunglasses or hats to see if the Host will use them with the towel critters. They can be so creative.:thumbsup2

Thanks for sharing, I hope now that you have remembered how to post photos you will continue to add more photos now and then.:woohoo:

Howdy all,

I can't believe it is wednesday already, the week is flying by.

Today is suppose to be the hottest day of there year for here. 96 is predicted. Looks like 90's until at least next monday. That will be 9 days of 90+ temps, that breaks a record here. For many of you this is cooler weather but for Oregon it is extremely hot.
I even made my cookies at 6 a.m. today so I wont be heating the place up as it warms up today.

I am enjoying the sun, soon winter will be here and it will be rainy and cold. Good thing we have this cruise to break the ho hum of nasty winter weather.:cool1:

Back later to see who is around today,
I hope everyone is having a great day today.

Kathy

Good morning, everyone.

Ok, I finally had some time to post a few photos from our previous Disney cruises:

Castaway Cay: Ryan and I on the water bicycle... a lot of fun! You rent them for an hour.

ryanandkathyonwatercycleatCC.jpg

Part of Scuttle's Cove on Castaway Cay (area where you can leave kids so adults can go off on own). Ryan was playing soccer with a CM and other kids.

Ryan and Eric shooting hoops on the Sports Deck on deck 10. A super fun place for kids to be active!

RyanandEricplayingbasketball.jpg

Tyler and I playing Foos Ball on deck 9. There are lots of fun activities to do on Deck 9 and 10, which is great for Sea Days. :)

Another Towel Creation. A lobster! And, they put chocolates in the lobster with my son's sunglasses. Very cute!

A few more pictures. These are on the Wonder, but I would guess the Magic is no different. We were able to get up on the Bridge one day, which was really neat!! These are some pictures of the bridge:

Full view of bridge (that is my dad in the background talking to the crew member):

Bridge.jpg

One of my favorites! This is the famous Mickey Whistle!! It is even shaped as Mickey Mouse. So, when you hear that Mickey Whistle every time we leave port, or arrive at port, you can picture one of the crew members pushing this Mickey button. :)

Ryan wearing one of the captain's hats. He was pretty excited about it. :)

Great pictures Kathy.

We did a bridge tour once. Then after 9/11 they stopped doing them.
So they must of started doing them again? or did you just get a special peak of the bridge?

I always hoped they would do bridge tours again. Everything you see can be seen on line or on some special TV shows, so its not like they are protecting any secrets. There are always officers there so nobody can mess with anything.

The whistle is a neat added touch.:goodvibes

Love all the activities on decks 9 and 10. There is always something happening there. Even late at night.

Looks like Ryan is all set to take over the Captains job on the ship. LOL!! Cute shot. He will love for you to show that to his girlfriend when he is about 16. LOL!!!

We got up on the bridge during our Panama Canal cruise on the Wonder this past January 2011. My dad and mom were on the cruise with us, and my dad is a Harbor Pilot (retired now) up in Alaska. So, he has been the Harbor Pilot all of the cruise ships that go up to Alaska (except he has never piloted Disney ships!), and of course all non-Cruise ship ships (oil tankers, cargo, etc. etc.), so my dad wrote a note to Captain Henry while we were on the cruise asking if he could bring our family up to the bridge and told Cap. Henry that he is a Harbor Pilot (which is also a ship captain). Captain Henry sent a note back saying because he's a Harbor Pilot he can bring his family up on the bridge. So, that is how we got up there.

But, yes, they are no longer doing bridge tours since 9/11. It's not that there are things up on the bridge the don't want people to see (because you're right... they show the bridge in detail on the TV's in staterooms), but it's like a cockpit of an airplane... for security purposes, they don't want people walking around the bridge for fear some crazy person could actually do something.

Before 9/11, my dad used to be able to take me, DH, and if my brothers were interested, he'd take them (they weren't as interested in ships/boating as I was), and so I've been on many cruise ship bridges with my dad while he was actually working (while the ship was cruising, not docked), and I've been on lots of non-cruise ships bridges, too. So, has my DH with my dad. But, after 9/11, everything changed... my dad was no longer allowed to bring anyone with him on his jobs, not even my mom. There were a couple times he was able to bring us on board up on the bridge while the ship was docked, but he had to do lots of paper work and gets all sorts of secuirty clearance just for his immediately family to come on the bridge while the ship was docked, and this was rare.... it all depended on the captain, and if the captain knew my dad really well, then with security clearance, we could come on the bridge of the ships he was piloting only while they were docked.

But, now he's retired, so that is why he wanted to get up on the bridge of the Wonder, because my boys have never been able to go up on a bridge with my dad because of 9/11 and the secuirty crack down. So, in the note he sent to Capt. Henry, he explained this was one chance for his grandson's to see what their grandpa did for a living. :)

So, it was pretty special for Tyler and Ryan to get up on the bridge. For my dad, he said that it was just like any old bridge of a cruise ship! :) :) Nothing new to him.

-Kathy

Kathy,
That was really nice of your dad to write the Captain and for Captain Henry to allow it.

I am really happy we got to see the bridge before they stopped the tours. 2 of our grandkids were with us too although they were so young I am sure they dont remember it. But I do!!

Wish they did tours of the engine room areas, that would really be interesting. Of course they don't but it would be nice.

Were they doing galley tours when you went? I don't remember seeing that on our last cruise. I would like to do that again too.

Kathy

Hi My fellow cruisers!

I just received some challenging cruise news while at work - a patty in our group has had to back out and has therefore left me with the following:

*(1) non refundable double room at the Country Inn and Suites checking in on November 4th; one night. The rate is $75.98 inclusive of all taxes and breakfast BUT NOT INCLUDING port transfers.

If anyone os interested in taking over this ressie please email me at sdivine48@hotmail dot com

Thanks Jai

I apologize for the typos - I am posting from my phone! I meant one of our parties cancelled not patty:scared1:

Hi Jai,
sorry to hear someone had to cancel.:guilty:

We are booked at WDW.
Hopefully someone will need the room.
That is a nice hotel. I had friends who stayed there 3 years ago and really liked it.

Kathy

Very cool pics of the boat and Castaway Cay! Thanks for sharing! I'll have to show the kids tonight when I get home from work.

I think we have are plans set for returning off the boat. I found a company called Airport Bags that will supposedly take your bags from the ship to the airport and get 'em on the plane for us. I haven't checked out the details just yet, but it sounds like a perfect opportunity for me to give up having to delegate the responsibility of 3 huge rolling bags. :lmao:

Anyways, got a minivan rented for the day and will be heading over to Sea World until our flight later that night. Man, my kids (and myself) are gonna be WRECKED! :lmao:

Thanks again for the great advice!

Wonderful pictures, everyone! The pictures of the bridge were so interesting-and how nice for the boys to see what their grandfather did for a living. I loved seeing the Mickey whistle-no mistaking that button!
It sounds like everyone is settling in to their school routines-where did the summer go? I think I'd be more sad about it except for having this wonderful cruise to look forward to. I've read they decorate the ships the second week in November-is that us? Or will it begin with the Nov.12 cruise?
Anyone doing any cruise shopping? I've found a few sale things I couldn't resist with Labor Day sales. I also set aside a book I've been wanting to read for pool-side lounging.
I've enjoyed reading about everyone's post cruise plans. We're on a 6:00 flight home, but I think we'll be the ones wandering around the airport and killing time. Maybe we'll try to get on one of the earlier flights if they're not full.
