November 12, 2005....7 Night Eastern...Who Else?

:cool1: Me too! :flower: I picked mine up hot off the belated (Oregon) press today and I have never seen anything so cool! I am headed to work for the holiday weekend......yup...someone's got to take care of the precious premies in the NICU!. I plan on scouring the new 3rd edition from cover to cover on my "down" time in the next few weeks.

 When times are tough and things seems a little "off", I just think of our DCL cruise and everything seems okay, somehow! :confused3

Are ya' with me?

DIS NURSE :flower:

dis nurse-i have to ask a question, is it my imagination or is there is "baby boom" happening now? the reason i ask is, a few weeks ago i had a doctors appointment and while sitting in the waiting room (which is shared by the pediatricians in the medical group) saw more newborns in one place than i could believe. i made a comment to the receptionist and she said that they had noticed a big increase in new well baby appointments as well. also, when we were at the hospital with my daughter, i kept hearing what i thought was a child's wind up toy playing "lullaby and good night", when i heard it on several different floors i finaly asked one of the nurses if i was losing it or realy hearing it over and over. she laughed and told me that the hospital had the sound system rigged to play it every time the maternity ward delivered a new baby. i can't count how many times i heard it over the course of 24 hours! have you noticed any increase in births recently?

hope everyone is well, i imagine most of us are gearing up for the end of the school year (ours get out on thursday), hard to believe we we will soon be at the 5 month countdown to "the real vacation".

take care-barkley

Yes....lots and lots of babies! Especially in my area of Oregon, being one of the fastest growing areas in the country for a town of its size! and for every so many births, a certain percentage ends up in the NICU. There are only about 18-20 RN's in my hospital who are "high risk" NICU nurses so when the premies and sick term babies start flyin' in....my phone rings every shift (on my days off) begging to help out!
My job is truly the reason we could ever even think about expensive vacations like DCL! Good thing I love what I do.....so working extra hard at it, knowing there is "prize" in the future.....it's all worth it. :cheer2:

Keep the babies coming....great job security! :flower:

most off the babies born now are from that frist cold snap we had in november. Some of the premies could be the thanksgiving and Christmas holiday babies. Just remember to count back 8 to 9 months back and you my have your reason when the babies are being born at this rate. :goodvibes

i won't be a repeat customer in any maternity ward in this lifetime :teeth: but based on my 2 pregnancies, i can say that as far as comfort goes i would much rather be at the tail end of a pregnancy in the winter or spring months rather than in the full heat of summer (i can still recall wondering if our first child would be born rainbow tinted due to the number of boxes of popcicles i went through in the last month of my pregnancy  ).

Only having one child, (who is 10 today) I have to say that we suffered through the worst heat wave on record (that year) with an infant, and she had pyloric-stenosis, which went undiagnosed for 4 weeks! so we were dealing with alot as first time parents ( and without central air I might add) I would much rather be pregnant during the summer and take all of the suffering, than heve to deal with that again!!!

PS WOW my baby Laura is 10 today!!!!! :flower:

Happy Memeorial day everyone!!! :wave2:

amen to that!
my daughter (marissa) is 10 as well, she was so excited when i told her about this thread and she learned there would be dis board families on board with us that include girls her age! she and my son loved meeting the other "dis kids" on our last cruise and the little get togethers we planned (i was just looking at the photo album from our last trip and saw the group photo we took of all the kids, i imagine they have all grown quite a bit since then!).

speaking of pictures-i was very happy to learn via another thread that shutters now offers the service wherein they will burn digital photos to a cd, at least i won't have to take as many memory sticks or worry about something happening to my camera during the flight home!

does everyone have their calendars marked to do their advance reservations on line? i'm going to sit down this week and start plotting out which night we will do palo's (probably the 4th night since it will be the first night of repeat restaurant dining) and take a closer look at the excursions. we've never done an excursion on our previous 2 trips but i know dh wants to scuba, and i would like to look into the beach offerings. anyone else made any excursion decisions-would love your opinions, suggestions... also need to start plotting out what we want to accomplish during our pre wdw trip. i know the food and wine festival will be happening at epcot so i want to hit that, plan on doing the water park at least once or twice, but i want to learn more about the activities at the various on site resorts (to break up the theme park mania). it does not break my heart one bit that the time of year we're going the parks close earlier, i like knowing we won't be running around until midnight or one every night :sunny: .

everyone enjoy a safe and sane holiday weekend, and for those who have kids getting out of school this week-relish the fact that for a few months there will be no more homework, school projects, lunches to pack....

;) Just a few thoughts Barkley......we are very interested in Captain Nautica's (speed bost) snorkel adventure on St.Thomas. I have read and heard lots about it.....no chance for sea sickness (catamarans swaying in the sea made us so sick in Hawaii!) and they take you to two or three PRIMO snorkel spots and the times are early or noonish. I am up against the age thing....DCL wants 8 yo and up but I have already contacted the owner of Captain Nautica and he said he can get me by that rule if DCL hears from him directly and my DS is a strong swimmer. Either way, everyone wears a life vest the entire time and he said I wouldn't believe the crazy poor swimmers that freak out in open waters his crew deals with!

We are also interested in going to Great Bay beach on St. Maarten (not a $$$ excursion, but a quick boat trip from the shiip to a great beach (I hear) with lots to do/rent....easy access and close.

That's all of our thoughts....do you think by chance the sting ray excursion at CC will be up and running by the time we go? Maybe not. That would be interesting to check out for out next cruise in NOv, 2006.

Please remind me again (first time criuser) when I can go on line and register the kids, etc. :sunny: Thanks....I am too busy sometimes to pay attention.

I have been in contact again with my TA over the weekend because when I started reading my new Passpoter DCL book, they have stateroom #2120 listed as only housing 3 people! Every single cat. 9 stateroom around that area houses 4 and I had to get the one that DCL says houses 3! We are a bed-hoppin kinda' family and could probably make do but come on! I am disappointed to say the least and she had better remedy the situation fast! Or at least find out what the deal is. Does anyone know what exactly is the difference with the "sleeps 3" vs "sleeps 4"? Our kids sleep with us alot but I wasn't looking forward to making this a plan for our vacation. :confused3

Ah, yes...bobsuzla.....I have recovered (from the OR) many post fixed pyloric stenosis babies and those parents go through quite the first few months of chronic barfing and weight loss! Glad you got her put back together quickly....sometimes it is misdiagnosed and left to, "she is just a spitty baby" and the consequences are bad.

Took care of a 1 lb., 8 oz kid today and am so glad we have big healthy children! Puts it all into perspective!

Barkley, how is your daughter doing so far??? I hope everything goes well (or as well as can be expeted) for her for the rest of the summer. If you wish, you can PM me and I will give her my DD's email so they can say Hi once in a while...
Disnurse- I think Captain Nautica is becoming our first choice also, but i have some notes on some others too... our only definate is Parrasailing at castaway key.

DISNurse,

A cabin that sleeps 4 has a drop-down bunk, in addition to a fold out sofa. Even with "bed hoppers", you definately want the cabin that sleeps 4...at least everyone can start the night in their "own" beds. :) The passporter is sometimes wrong about these things...in fact, it happened to us. My TA assured me our cabin slept 4...I worried about it until I got on the ship and saw for myself. It worked out fine for us...I hope it does for you, too!

Barkley,

What an ordeal for you and your daughter. I hope that her recovery is going well. The procedure sounds so painful. :earseek: I'm sending some more pixie dust her way :wizard: !

Hi ship mates....I hope you all had a very patriotic and memorable holiday.....

It will soon be time for our five month count down and I cannot wait....I still wonder where the rest of our shipmates are, if not on this thread? Are you out thereeeeee?????????????????

Barkley - hope your daughter is healing as fast or faster than possible. We are WDW vets, but cruise newbies - so let me know what tips you want at the resorts etc. You can get lots of info on line, but here is one of my favorites. Plan an night around Animal Kingdom Lodge. They have fireside stories and lots of animals to look at - sometimes with keepers. Boma is a great resturant, serving African Food....trust me some kids will try anything and it is great to see...If yours are picky they have the standard chicken fingers and mac and cheese (blah - life is short - test those taste buds)...

As an aside, and I would be interested in others with kids....Character meals are fun at WDW but crowded and expensive. There are tons of characters on the ship, so I would suggest not planning many at the world....that require extra expense.

Food and Wine is FAB for adults. We need days just to try everything and then we cannot insert the extra seminars etc. Oh yeah, we're going too....

I agree about the character meals at WDW - it almost seems like the characters are rushed. On the cruise, the characters were everywhere and lines were short to meet them. We waited over 30 minutes to meet Minnie Mouse in the Magic Kingdom - that's when we decided we're taking the cruise again!
We are actually going to Disneyland in August - never been there - has anyone here been there and have any tips???

Great news today as far as our stateroom saga....believe or not the infamous Passporter was wrong and my TA checked it all out....even the DCl person on the phone gave her a, "dahhh....why wouldn't that room be asigned to 4 people when it clearly for 4 people?!" I was just making certain and my TA as well said...the Passporter can unfortunately be wrong! :confused3
Sooo...all is well in the stateroom #2120.

I will devulge a little secret here.....if the talent show onboard was advertising a great incentive (like a free 7 night cruise!!! :cheer2:  :cheer2: ) for the winner I would surely pack a CD with the music to a tap number I am performing this SAT/SUN in front of 600 people! I could have enough bravery with a glass of wine or two and go for it....but everything I have read says there is no "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow. :sad2:

It is to a HOT Madonna song with a slinky black outfit and cowboy hat....it would be fun to be competing for a free cruise....but not for "nothing"....sorry.....unless you all got me motivated enough to go out there and give my all just for a heck of it! :cheer2:

My daughter is the one who started it all....her 5th year of tap, jazz, and hip hop! I am just "along for the ride" and she thinks it's cool that Mommy dances too.

thanks to everyone for the kind wishes and inquiries about marissa. she is doing well and returned to school today-although she fell asleep on the reading sofa during lunch and did'nt awake until school let out at 3 p.m. (her teacher was forewarned this morning that marissa's energy level expectations far exceeded reality, and given that it's a one room school with less than 30 kids they willingly accommodated her :). she's bummed that she will have to miss out on her week at summer camp, but our neighbor with a new beautiful built in pool brightened her up with an offer of evening swims once the orthopedist gives the green light. we're also going to try and get in a short trip to santa cruz beach/boardwalk in august, so she will have some fun before school starts up again. now i just have to start researching the internet for travel insurance and plan on paying for the policies that exclude preexisting conditions (since we were told it would take at least 6 months for the bone to get to a point of normal density, i'm not taking any chances of having to deal with an out of state or out of country emergency).

thanks for the info. on wdw, and the various excursions- i will surely have more questions. i don't anticipate doing any character meals, we'll get our fill of characters on board (although on both our prior wdw trips we found "chef mickeys" at the contemporary a relaxing and enjoyable meal. i think both times we booked for the last seating in the evening so the crowds were minimal, and the characters were alot more accessable. i do want to check out animal kingdom lodge, and sounds from your posting that it could offer some good non theme park activities (marissa will try any food, spencer on the other hand is definatly in the mac n cheese crowd).

DISNEYLAND? SOMEONE WANTS INFO. ON DISNEYLAND? finaly a subject a westcoaster can help with. anything in particular that you want to know? will you being staying on site or off? the major difference you will find is that disneyland is what wdw calls "the magic kingdom" on a larger scale (in fact our first trip to wdw's magic kingdom left us referring to it as "honey, i shrunk the kingdom") with some of the rides that are at mgm and epcot. there is fairly recent addition of california adventure and the downtown disney area, but disneyland proper is still the orignal portion of the park. you will find that some of the rides are the same but larger in scale (it's a small world is massive in comparison with wdw's, and the haunted mansion is more spread out-also a completly different architectural design on the outside). sleeping beauty's castle unlike wdw does not have a restaurant area, however there is the matterhorn mountain which you will go inside and have a great ride.
fantasmic is another experience at disneyland unlike wdw's-it's not in a stadium, it's done on the waters that surround tom sawyer island and bank up near bear country. people sit on the grassy areas and watch the projections appear on huge sprays of water and mist (very nice on a hot summer night since we are of the dry heat climate). as far as tips go-i'll give you my top, and let me know any areas of specific interest for which i will do my best. here it is-at disneyland the pirates of the caribean ride begins in bayoo country, floating past shacks and a large patio with twinkling lights. the twinkling lights are the candles on the tables of one of the most popular restaurants at disneyland-the blue bayoo. it has wonderful food (both for adults and kids) and because it shares the space with pirates-the ceiling looks like a star filled sky (you also get to watch people floating along on the pirates ride). it is wonderfully cool, and is a must for us on every trip. the restaurant does not take advance reservations, so people immediatly upon entering the park go to make their same day reservations. pirate:

enuf for tonight-glad to hear that dis nurse will have sufficient bedding in her cabin (we too have "bed hoppers" but have found that disney smartly locates their in cabin t.v.'s with a better view from the kid's beds, so they tend to stay put on these trips).

barkely

Barkley - more pixie dust for Marissa princess:

I'd suggest we do something special for her on the cruise, but then the other kids might get jealous? Now that she knows, maybe she could help pick out post cards to exchange and keep it a secret from her brother??? Maybe even at Santa Cruz.

:earsgirl: Everyone -- Which is an idea for those of you whose kids know about the cruise, (and us adults that won't grow up) why not grab post cards from your summer trips and write them to a secret pal to exchange on the ship. (We can at least get the geography :teacher: lesson in while they are out of school....

Everyone take care on this first week of summer....

Barkely - almost forgot my favourite tip - don't pass this one on or it will get too crowded. Ft. Wilderness has nightly campfire cartoons, when I went, it was with "smores. Plus you can walk down to the lake and see the nightly water parade. You used to be able to see fireworkds, but then the vegetation grew. I noticed they lost lots of trees, but I would not count on being able to see the Fireworks. You can also rent carriage rides through the woods. Mickey's Back Yard BBQ is also fun, but an extra cost event.

You do not need to stay in Ft. Wilderness to attend the campfires, or at least you did not when I was last there. Check it out!!! :cool1:

Thanks for all of the tips Barkley!
So far, we are planning on staying at the HoJo across from the parks. Got a nice deal, but am hoping to get a great deal on one of the Disney Resorts since this will most likely be our one and only trip to Disneyland. We arrive on August 26 and are staying thru the 29th. We are actually taking a 4 night cruise on the Monarch of the Seas beginning the 29th.
Living in Georgia, not too many people head to CA for Disneyland so we are pretty clueless as to what are the "must see" attractions. We've got Disneyworld down to a science though!
My daughter has a poster of Mickey and the Disney Magic in her playroom and looks at it everyday asking if she can go see Mickey. It's going to be a long 5 months of waiting!!! But well worth it! :earsgirl:

:jumping1:

Check your COUNTDOWN Timers Ship-mates.

We are approaching another milestone :bounce:

On June 12th - we will be 5 months (and no week) away from boarding the MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cheer2:

:cool1: That is music to my :earsgirl: ears!!!!!

Thanks for the reminders along the way.....

I think the one month countdown will REALLY send me over the edge! :wave2:
