Notice anything interesting about these homecoming mums?

Awww, cute! I miss those big football mums. I wore one every year at homecoming. They were almost as big as my head!

I don't think they are supposed to really be Mickeys. But they sure looked like Mickeys to me. Maybe the florist is an imagineer wannabe . I've never seen mums look like that before. Usually they are bigger and clumped together.

Didn't even know there was such a thing as mums until earlier this year.

Ok so I'll admit I've been beat down about it and homeschooling is a touchy subject for me on the Dis this past week... but I SWORE that said HOMESCHOOLING MUMS. I though maybe OP was from Autrailia or something LOL!

Parents and boyfriends give them (or have the florist deliver them) to girls to wear all day on homecoming football game day. They have all kinds of bells, ribbons, little charms, and such on them. They are a big, jangly distraction in the schools that day.

The ribbons and such are the school's colors.

Yeah, i could have used some of those great Homeschooling Mums when I was homeschooling my three wild ones.

ah, homecoming mums...those bring back memories. at my school, the football players, cheerleaders and band bought them for their moms to wear to the homecoming games. LOVE the mickey heads!

Sometimes the mums are bigger than the girls who wear them!

There's a whole hierarchy in sizing, too. Freshman wear single flower mums, sophomores double, juniors triples (Mickey!!!), and seniors are the biggest.

People put all kinds of dangly charms and ribbons and sparkly things on them. Stuffed animals. Battery powered twinkle lights. There was one I saw last year that had a stuffed animal attached to a battery powered motor that rotated it in circles. The biggest ones require a harness-type contraption to wear.

It's nuts, but a fun (and expensive) part of a Texas homecoming!

I didn't know about the whole hierarchy thing! I know they do homecoming mums in Oklahoma, too. I wonder if it's done everywhere, or just in the plains/southern areas.

And I forgot about the stuffed animals . When I worked as a nurse at a high school, I remember having to help the girls keep them on with pins. We kept a big stash of safety pins for mums and other clothing "emergencies". I remember one girl having the horse beanie baby on her mum. I thought it was so cute that I eventually bought one. The beanie baby horse, that is, and not a mum .

I saw some in my Kroger last week too!!! And yes, I thought they looked like Mickey.

(I thought everybody did mums -- who knew? Yes, I'm from Texas.)

Wow, I've never heard of this before! That sounds like such an interesting tradition though... some things like this make me wish I lived in the US!
