How about it -- where are the safest places, nature-wise, to reside? (My kid really wants to know!)

Well I live on Long Island, about 35 minutes from Manhattan. I can only think of one really bad hurricane, Gloria (and that was in 1985). And even in that one, I don't think there were any casualties.

We don't get earthquakes or volcanoes here. Although upstate NY gets it's share of snow, the NYC area rarely has a snowstorm big enough to cause problems. Nature-wise NYC/Long Island is, IMHO, very safe. Human-being wise, you might have some issues in certain areas.

I know this isn't right, but I really really really want to smack those people screaming out their windows and from roof tops for help! The city of N.O. ran buses to get people to the Superdome, so not having transportation is not an excuse either. It just makes me mad because they are now going to end up endangering the lives of emergency personnel to go and save them. (it makes me sad as well, but I swear, my first reaction is HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE?!?!?!?) If the rest of us in the country know about how dangerous New Orleans can be in a storm like this, how could they not know the dangers??? *sigh*

Ok - yell at me if you want.

:wizard: Hoping for the best still for everyone there (even the idiots! )

Laura

Laura - I'd like to hope there are some extenuating circumstances, but you're likely right. This had been about teh world's slowest hurricane. Not like it really caught people off guard. Ditto your last line! MAybe I should add a little extra good wishes for the rescuers too!

Mar' - I really hope Toon's house is ok, but the forecasted flooding does not sound good at all.

I agree with you Laura, I hate to read things like that. Makes me think of stories I'vce read where someone goes off into the wilderness unprepared, gets trapped or lost, and it takes a whole crew and tens of thousands of dollars to save them from their own stupidity.

It's sure not right that folks have to risk their lives because of someone else's foolishness. I guess some people are in such deep denial that they lose their common sense. I can't imagine staying even if it was just me, but those with kids who stayed really made extremely poor decisions.

I know what you mean. My husband just told me he saw them rescue a woman and her 5 children off their roof. What was she thinking?

The thing that's kind of haunting me, though, are the people who really wouldn't have had much chance to find out in time. My friend said she saw a picture of 2 homeless guys huddled in a doorway on Bourbon Street from this morning, and it's not like they're watching the news, or can drive away. Hopefully whoever took the picture gave them a ride. It just gives the the willies thinking about it.

Around here, people have been taking kids out in Lake MI swimming, even when teh red flag (Do Not Swim) is flying. After resuing one person and one body, they interviewed a mom on teh beach with her kids. SHe said it was just too hard to keep the boys oyt of teh water when the waves are so fun now. :confused3 Take them home!

Or, there's the people who drive their car out onto the ice in Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron). The expenses were getting too high to rescue people and tehn dredge their vehicles out of the lake, so people are now charged for both Coast Guard rescue and removing car from lake.

jnrrt - Yes, the homeless who haven't seen the news are sad stories. I do hop ethey helped the people they are filming, but I never know about the media. I was under the impression they canvassed the street and that's how teh homeless ended up in teh sSuperdome. I know they can't get everyone, though. That is hard.

You know, Carrie, that reminds me of my FIL who's in MI telling me that a while back they had a huge chunk of ice break off from the land on one of the lakes (can't remember which) and stranded about 100 people and all their trucks, etc. in the middle of the lake. The rescue took forever. And none of them should have even been on the lake because the ice had been softening. Luckily, no one was too near the edge where it broke off. I don't think they lost any people, but I don't even know how you're supposed to rescue a truck floating in the middle of a lake.

I just get mad because the people who just didn't think they should leave or whatever, and then change their minds, put someone else's loved one at risk to rescue them, and that's just not right.

(This just made that runaway bride chick pop into my head. I know she has some serious issues and I think everyone here would have forgiven her {because it is obvious that there is more to this story than we will ever know} EXCEPT that when she settled for "X" amount with the local authorities {much less than it cost for the search btw} to help repay the cost of the search for her...and then turned RIGHT around and made a HUGE deal for movie and book rights. *blah* What goes around comes around sister!)

Carrie - I agree that MAYBE there were circumstances beyond their control, its just hard to imagine sometimes. I need my friend to call me and then I will get back on the "1/2 full" side of life :) (and that dang Toon needs to check in ASAP too :teeth: If we ever needed a Toon....it sure would be now)

Speaking of...

Ode to a Flooded Tooneric Land

We all saw the reports
and it didn't look good.
The bad weather is coming.
Run away you should.

The city sits waiting
like a soup bowl to fill.
The levies might not hold
Burbon Street busy still.

The morning it crested
Tooneric long departed.
The house all sealed up,
left behind, brokenhearted.

The winds they did howl,
the rain and water rushing in.
A glimmer of hope on the horizon.
Katrina shifted and danced again.

Tooneric, we miss you
and wish your family the best.
Our thought, prayers and pixie dust
hoping to help your family through this test.

Come and find us soon.
You know where we are.
Waiting for our favorite transparent friend
hoping the best from afar.

We pray the storm spared you
and your loved ones too.
Come back and play with us
Ya big hearted toon.

(wow - super bad eh? lol)

Are you kidding, this was GREAT! I'm sure Toon will love it when he gets a chance to read it!

My attempt (To the tune of Here Comes the Sun)

There goes the sun
Da da da da
There goes the sun
And I said
It's all wet :umbrella:

Poor new orleans
It's been a long wet Monday morning
Poor new orleans
It seems like years since it's been dry

There goes the sun
Da da da da
There goes the sun
And I said
It's all wet.

Our Tooneric
Has taken refuge in a safe place
Our Tooneric
We hope his house is safe as well

There goes the sun
Da da da da
There goes the sun
And I said
It's all wet.

Hope toon's back soon
Telling tales about Katrina
None the worse off
Back here with his DIS board pals

Here comes the sun
Here comes the sun
And I said
It's alright! :sunny:

Yours is better by far Laura, but the bad lyricist couldn't sit this one out!

I do believe Toon would be honored. I'm such a sap, I'm tearing up. I do have the utmost sympathy for all of those who did all they can, but may end up without their home anyway. Better to spare them, than their home, but I just can't imagine.

I do belive we're OT today, as we are toalking about something, and something important, no less. Hopefully, readers will forgive us, as it involves one of our key players and some good friends.

Let us know if you hear from your friend Laura.

hahah and I didn't even spell Bourbon correctly (shame on me)

It is hard to out ode the Bad Poet!

I love it Mar....now we do need to sing Here Comes the Sun for all of them! I hope it pops out soon and helps things to look better. (I can't imagine those first pictures - they are going to be horrific I am sure).

I will let you know Carrie. The phones were already a mess on Sunday, but I did get in a 10 minute "be careful" conversation. I suspect it might be Tuesday or Wed. before I hear any word. ugh! Trying not to sulk lol

I am starting to think Calypso must have had a run in with that pancake batter again this weekend :earboy2: that is why we haven't seen her yet!

Mar' - Another fine job by the not-so-bad lyricist. Very good. Let's hope the sun comes out tomorrow. No, I won't go there.

Laura - Now I'm seeing some nasty weather with tornadoes in your area! Hope things are ok there!

I'd really like Ms. Katrina to go away now!

In the spirit of nothing, please excuse me while I type this as fast as I can to try out my new IE spell check. Unfortunately, I cannot think of a work related reason for having the tool bar, so I will not likely be able to spell check most of my posts, but the ones from home will be golden. Unfortunately, it will also not likely prevent run on sentences.

Thank you fro your patience. Now on to the regularly scheduled nothing, which is currently the something called Katrina.

Wow! That works good!

Ruh Roh, me thinks there is trouble in paradise... :goodvibes
Insert Yosemite Sam expletive here.

I had to remove "fro" from my regular spell check in Word, as it is technically a word. Don't have that option here. {Insert bubble bursting} :sad2:

Apparently grammar check doesn't.

Forgive me, I'm very cranky. NOT a good day. I almost came to blows with a sprinkler repair guy, everything I touched broke or stopped working (e.g. cut two extension cords while using electric shrub clippers), I'm now receiving the hospital bills and of course several are wrong, and Evan must hate me, because that's the only reason for any living organism to behave the way he is.

Mommy.
