Notary public requirement.

Can't they just use another person (unrelated) in the office?
I guess they can at the convention center only the notary was present and the deed didn’t require any witnesses.

when I go to the US embassy it is specifically stated on their website that if witnesses are required I need to bring them myself.

How do you guys go about the witnesses situation? I mean asking friends or family to go with you to sign papers seems like an awful lot of inconvenience to the people you ask for help.
The only time I've needed a witness, (not a DVC doc), my lawyer just had his secretary do it. Notarization is very easy in the States. I know it's different in Europe.

Year year and the year before I sold a contract and another timeshare in Florida and I didn’t need to bring any witnesses.

However I was on vacation each time in the US when I went to a notary in either a Bank or used the one at the convention center at beach club. None of the times did I need to bring any witnesses.

My local bank just had someone in the office do it. The notary was allowed to be one of the two so he just asked another person.

Sounds like it’s just different for you. Uggg

LOL I also was a notary in NYS although my commission expired a few years ago. Seems a popular thing to be in these parts. However rather than doing it to provide some useful benefit to the world in some capacity, I did it as a (then) political hack in order to witness petition signatures to get candidates on the ballot for minor parties, which I’m guessing is probably unique amongst us. It was a weird way to spend my time.

In the us, ups is $8/signature. They are really ripping you off in Canada.

The UPS store prices vary state to state. In NY it’s illegal to charge more than $2. In Ohio the UPS store recently charged us about $20.

My ex text me yesterday and asked if I could be a witness for him on something that needed notarized. We went to his bank when I got off work today. Funny part was, the paperwork said 2 witnesses but only had 1 line (both DS20 and I signed that line because it was big enough). So yes, asking friends or family.

I have read that at embassies do not supply witnesses 😐. At ups, they just grabbed other employees for us. Kind of weird I guess.

That is interesting

According to the website they are open for business so I might be able to avoid that many additional costs as it’s only $50 each for their services.

I need to bring my own witnesses as the US embassy can’t help with that.

what happens if I add the witness signatures AFTER getting the documents notarized?
I am seller closing on a contract through Mason. I needed FIVE of my signatures notarized. This was because I held title in the name of a trust. I use my local Auto Club for notary which is free since I have an elevated membership. I pay for the more expensive membership specifically for the free notary.

I wonder if you could get witnesses after the fact? Not sure, but my paperwork also requires two witnesses (can't be a family member) but I've learned from doing this a few times I can just have witnesses sign the paper ahead of time. Pre-Covid, I just asked random people at Auto Club waiting area to please sign for me (got some odd looks but always found kind people to help me out) but now with Covid, there's no one in waiting area so I just had folks at work sign papers before I took them in. No problem with the notary.

Good luck!

And, I will add that unless it has changed, you can not refuse to notarize if someone can’t afford or says they can’t pay. It’s one of the reasons I have never charged...though I do mostly for friends now.

My bank does it for free. There are always 4-5 employees there so I've never had a problem getting a witness. I believe it's free for any depositor and it is a small community bank in NH.

I'm honestly surprised they don't require that to be notarized in the US as well, especially for a large contract.
