Not what it once was

So how did you like the new lights on the castle? On television they look like an absolute fantasy come true. I wonder why Disney put them up if they are trying so hard to cut back?

We are Floridians who used to go a lot. Unfortunately for family health reasons we had to cancel yet another trip. Maybe next year we can finally be disappointed about how far downhill Disney has come...

So sorry you had to cancel your trip. We were there for 5 weeks before we finally decided it was safe to leave Mom and travel. There were a few nights of tears before we got our good news.

Everyone says, without fail, that the castle lights are the disney of years past - they did a great job.....but they are not something new.....they have been a part of the MK for a few years now.

Example......if you attended the Christmas party before the Christmas parade taping....there was no christmas tree? WHAT? No Christmas tree at a Christmas party....hey did they cutback on the price of the ticket. Nope....raised the price. They just saved $$$$$ by not setting up the tree near the castle BEFORE the taping and moving it after. Basically disney told the MVMCP guests before last weekend their $60 p/psn was not worth the effort to setup a christmas tree.

I have BEAUTIFUL photographs of the tree near the castle with Mickey and Minnie in the foreground. "Give 'em less....charge'em more".

Look around, it's not hard at all anymore to see what they have taken away.

OP, thank you for posting your experience at Disney. What makes Disney so special is their attention to detail and wonderful service. When these things are lacking, it is certainly disappointing. Again, when people speak up regarding inefficiencies regarding service, cleanliness and hotel problems, such as faulty plumbing, etc., it can only make the experiences of other better in the future.

Again, thanks for your viewpoint. Thats why I read the dis. If everyone felt the same, there would be no reason to read and contribute.

Hopefully, you can recapture some old memories and make some new ones in the future. :)

DL has its own issues. We were there a couple of days this summer and knew going into it that they had oversold their annual passes. We just were unable to adjust our schedules to avoid being there when the passes weren't blocked. What a VASTLY different experience it was compared to our last visit there in 07 at the same time of year! I thought I was overcompensating be heading for the castle a full 2 HOURS before the fireworks and barely found a spot. People put out blankets HOURS in advance for Fantasmic. It was wall to wall people, which greatly affected our entire experience.

I agree with you......even our beloved DL is a bit of a shadow of what it once was.

Years ago I convinced my WDW addicted husband to try DL. He never wanted to go because it was too small. We went shortly after the 50th anniversary and we had a wonderful time....and he fell in love with it.

As an example.......I was also at DL about 18 months BEFORE the 50th anniversary when they were desperate to bring it back into some kind of condition they could show off to the World press after years of budget surplusses because of neglected maintenance. I have always thought they would never let WDW fall as downhill as DL was because it is soooooooo expensive to "bring it back". I was wrong.

I hope you have a GRAND time if you are visiting DL.......say hello to the place for us. We will be there next year!

I think it's much easier to notice things that are wrong or that don't live up to expectations when things in uour real life are also going wrong. I'm so sorry that your mother and you have had to deal with devastating illnesses. I wonder if perhaps you were expecting the "magic" to do more that it ever could?

That being said, yes, there have been reductions at Disney World. Those reductions have occurred all over as well, though - we noticed it in Italy and in Vermont on recent trips. Just as airlines have reduced flights so that now all flights are still full. No one is immune to the effects of the recession.

I hope 2011 is a better year for you.

Thank you for your kind words about my Mom.....she is a "timex watch of people".....just keeps clicking away. She constantly surprises her doctors and did it once againg this time!

I don't think my mother's illness honestly has much in common with disney cutting back on fireworks shows, overpriced meals, poor/untrained valet service or tubs which don't drain. These observations began on our flower and garden trip in the spring and were VERY obvious with the cutbacks and obscene pricing for food and wine this year.

It's just a trend the last 24 months which is tough to swallow. Perhaps if they cutback so much while NOT also raising prices AND having such successful financial quarters. Greed is getting a little heart stopping.

After all, how much would it cost to play holiday music after holiday illuminations vs. going right back to the country music. A little holiday spirit would be ice.....they HAVE the music....just use International Gateway holiday music and make the stroll out of EPCOT more pleasant......just an observation.

I'm happy you can spend your travel dollar and not care.

Spending the time with my family is way more important than caring about trash on the ground or price of food.

Caring is precisely our problem with this last trip. We remember what disney used to be before it was all about money.

We care - that's why these changes were so tough to swallow. After all....at the prices they charge one should expect that level of service and maintenance of say....one of the Universal hotels!

True, the guests' behavior is at times shocking.....profanity shouted during family meltdowns....but that has nothing to do with the parks being not truly clean. It has everything to do with continuing staff and budget cuts.

We care that we get the best value for our hard earned vacation dollar. We skipped WDW last year for DL with our Disney friends during this same week and had a GREAT time. DL was sparkling, castmembers were wonderful.....cheep food was still disappointing....but overal we felt we received great value.

This year at WDW.....with all our castmember discounts, we still feel Disney fell way short.....especially in EPCOT. I said each night.....I'm sure glad we didn't pay anything for these tickets........or........the food was ok as long as we didn't have to pay full price and finally.........the gift shopping with castmember discounts brought the prices down to where they SHOULD be priced for retail guests (50% this year).

So you did not pay for most of what we do and still want to complain. Really? Did Disney take some of your Castmember Perks away so you feel you need to vent about other stuff?

DL is so far superior to WDW this time of year....next year is a no-brainer for us. The great news.....Grand Californian is one of Disney's BEST - even with all the staff cutbacks and $$$ cuts.

DL doesn't give my family the same Magical feeling as WDW does. We are going back in 2012 mainly to see Carsland and It's a Small World (closed when we were there)

When we stop caring about our travel experiences is when we stop traveling.

I'm confused! Our vacation money comes right out of our tax return. It's not that I don't care about what I get for my money it's I don't care the little (too me) issues that you talk about. Bathroom = do you expect someone to be in there from open to close to pick up after the slobs that can't seem to put the paper towel in the trash can? As long as there is no #1 or #2 all over the place then it works for me.

We've been going to WDW annually since 2004.

I can honestly say I don't notice any of these changes. I truly believe that it is still the cleanest park around. But I have never noticed anything declining that impacted my enjoyment of WDW. I think the trips are what you make them.

This is cetainly a disappointment expecially the notes about BCV. We will be there soon and if i notice the same issues, i will post.

I agree... Disney is definitely starting to slack in a lot of areas, and that makes us sad. We will try some new vacation spots until we make it back and they start to get back to what it used to be. I've seen some really cool things over the last 6 months of living here and got to see 4th of July and Christmas now, and I am happy for that. I would have never taken a vacation down here at those times of year.

I'd never seen the holiday decorations before, and I was definitely NOT impressed with them. I was very disappointed. :(

Happily, we always manage to have a great time.....even at the Walt Whitman on the Jersey Turnpike. It's all about who you share your life with. Not to worry about a miserable time....it's always magic with my DH. I was writing about decline.

Another example......

Our first night we found our way to the Poly for some Boutiki shopping and Kona Cafe. After, we strolled around enjoying the might and lights of the lake. We looked over at the Grand Floridian, the flagship of disney resorts, and the lights were mostly dark. You know, the lights on the roof tops which twikle at night. There were some here and there on the out buildings....a strand here and there....but it looked awful from the water. The "A" on the boardwalk sign was dark the entire 8 days we were at the Beach Club......lights surounding the rooftops at EPCOT ALL had burned out bulbs....Poor Eiffle tower. Yes, there were lights but change the burned out bulbs! It was a chronic problem property wide.

Years ago I managed a resort in the tropics. If your property is run well, your maintenance manages problems like this. It's the little things that turn a good property into a truly exceptional one. Sorry, if I was staying at the Grand Floridian (at those prices) I would expect it to be as perfect as possible. Certainly not an entire side of lights out with other sections having a strand on here and there. tacky!
.....and to answer some questions.

You miss the point.....this is disney's responsibility and a standard DISNEY created. For me, it IS important the parks are clean for my friends and family. They just take the cheep way out with outsources and reduced staff. If you are happy with trash lying around....so be it. I KNOW Disney can do - and has done better.

Nope - just telling the truth.

Trust me, there are few castmembers who do not appreciate their perks....they are offered because until you have been with the company for a while, the salary compensation is lousy. After 33 years, DH, has earned all of his valuable perks......trust me.
Once again, I am not complaining - rather discussing areas of obvious decline.

We know how very lucky we are traveling to a Disney park/resort.

There is NEVER a trip to WDW that we do not discuss how people can continue to afford a Disney trip.....there are so many things to do which are far less exensive in the hospitality business. Disney's prices continue to go up for everything and the quality of the product declines......but they are now leaving behind people who are being priced out of the market.......how can they NOT be?

I am now in sales of consumer products and in gift shops often. After all the years I have a good eye for quality an pricing. I repeat.....the cost of Disney's merchandice is way out out of line and better (more fairly) priced at the castmember discount price. Trust me, even at that discount they are making a buttfull of $$$$
.

With CA I admit Disney is spending a bunch of $$$$$$ to finally build it into the park it should be. WOC - WOW what a show. It IS a small footprint compared to WDW, but for us, that is some of it's charm. Besides, it's the original an therefore has a special magic none of the others can capture. When we stop caring about our travel experiences is when we stop traveling.

Regarding bathrooms......I expect staff to maintain bathrooms period. If the bathroom is a high-traffic bathroom and becomes dirty quickly, than yes, they need to have staff in there frequently to keep it clean. This is not rocket science. You hire staff based on need. If a bathroom is dirty, you need to increase the frequency it is cleaned.

Luckily, as I said in my original post......it looks like Disney is doing a little better with bathrooms. There were a few which were truly clean and sparkling, many were smelly but usable.....but I found none of the sewers we saw earlier in the year. I still believe "smelly but usable" is not a disney standard....call me silly.

I'm sorry you also found one of our favorite places on earth this way. I guess for disney now as long at there are people in the parks, they can continue to cut the quality of the experience.

6 years ago I took my DH (dbf at the time) to the time to the Beach Club the same time of year for the holiday happeings. The parks and events simply knocked his socks off and the first thing he said....."we are coming back here and doing this NEXT year!"

He adored LOW. During our holiday visit we would end most of our evenings at EPCOT.....wander over to LOW and linger for a while.....watch the people enjoying it....the little children dancing to the music. Post Illuminations was truly a magic time. This one was a biggie for DH to swallow (we changed our trip to DL last year when we read about LOW gone).

There are just too many cutbacks to make it worth the effort anymore.

I'm so sorry you felt the same way. It's tough when you see the tarnish.
