Not sure what the rules are...

Hi everyone -
I'm currently planning our Dec 2016 trip and my MIL just asked if her and my FIL could join in on the trip. We go to WDW every 2 years but it's always just been my immediate family of 4 and we always get DxDP. I've never had to plan for extended family or a larger group than just the 4 of us, so I'm trying to get all of my info correct before I sit down with my MIL. That way she knows what she's going into and can make the right decision for them, if they decide to come with us. We haven't worked out very many details yet, but my in-laws haven't been to WDW in probably 20+ years, so I'm not sure how they will feel about getting the dining plan for themselves...

If I'm making ADRs for 6, but only 4 of us have the DxDP and 2 pay OOP, is that possible? Or does everyone at the table have to pay the same way? Can we split the check at the table like that?
Or if we get the DxDP, they will have to get it as well so we can all dine together...?

TIA!

If they're on your trip reservation, they have to be on the same dining plan as you. It's all or none.

If they are not- you can absolutely pay oop for some guest and with the dining plan for others at a dinner. My SIL was part of the Disney college program and joined us for several meals during our trip and was able to pay oop.

You don't have to tell them that you are on the dining plan until you sit down at the restaurant and it doesn't matter how many are on the plan.

But as the PP said if they are in your room they will have to get the dining plan. You can make separate reservations.

Thank you so much for the quick replies!
They would be on their own reservation... we've already got our room at WL, so they would be getting their own room and reservation.
This is good news!
My MIL typically eats a piece of fruit for breakfast, while my DH has the full bacon and eggs and anything else that comes with it!
We get the DxDP because we really do eat 3 TS meals per day, but I know that my in-laws will probably feel that is too much for them and will likely order an appetizer or salad for lunch only. I don't think any of the dining plans would be a good idea for them, from a price perspective, so I was hoping they could pay out of pocket for their food.
Thanks again!

Just so you know, you can also "share" some of your credits with them. As a family of 4, you will have 12 credits per night, and at least for right now, even kids on the DxDDP plan can order adult meals. The brochure still states they must order from the kid's menu, but that is not being enforced and ordering adult meals has even been encouraged here and there. So, if you still have Disney kids, you could use their credits to order adult meals for your in laws and then pay OOP for a kid's meal. They could even split a meal if it's too much food. The only restaurant you would not be able to do this is Via Napoli, but all others seem to be fair game.

Oh that's right! I had forgotten about the new changes and being able to pay for others with our credits. That's great to keep in mind. Thanks!
