Not sure if I should be happy or sad?

DH who is an active duty Air Force Officer received orders today for a one year remote assignment to Korea!! Which means, he goes and we stay! He has to leave three weeks after we return from the cruise

At least he gets to go on the cruise with us and can take those memories with him to help get through that year and maybe I can convince him to rebook while onboard for a “welcome home” celebration next year!

The hardship tour is rough, but hopefully the year will go quickly. When my BIL was in Korea we taped lots of shows from TV and mailed him boxes of video tapes, 15-20 at a time. The guys over there were very hungry for the current shows here.

He was able to get great deals on Coach handbags, Starter athletic apparel, and other things like that.

I hope you have a great time on your cruise and can make lasting memories.

My best advice is to go make some memories and think about only the present while on vacation. It will be sad, I am sure. What a great way to give him a send off. You may want to speak to your dining server to tell them the occasion and maybe they can help in your celebration and honor him in some way.

First off a big thank you to your DH for serving us all.

Enjoy your cruise and all the wonderful memories you'll be making. Take lots of pictures and be sure to take one formal one of the family he can take with.

I think rebooking for a cruise after he comes home is a great idea. See if you can book it far enough out that the final payment isn't due until after he is home. That way you can make sure he is up for it and still give you time to cancel without penalty (just in case he just wants to chill and not do another vacation right away).

I really feel for you. My husband is also active duty AF and is currently serving a one year tour in Korea. We actually got the news he was going the day after we returned from our cruise. Talk about an awful shock after the best time of our lives. He will be home for a mid tour in June, I am counting the days.
One good thing did came out of it though, I absolutly hated our last duty station (Nellis AFB in Las Vegas) Well, we used him going to Korea to get our preference for our next duty station. We asked for Hill AFB in Utah and got it. So we made the best out of a horrible situation. We had a beautiful home built and I have spent the last 5 1/2 months shopping and decorating. I would of course trade everthing to have my husband with me instead, but someone has to be there protecting S. Korea from the North. You will be in my prayers, and I hope you can also find a way to find something positive during this horrible situation. Maybe you can also get the base of your dreams. Good luck and God bless!

I know this news is not what you wanted to hear. I feel sad for all the hubbies, daddies, sons, daughters who have to leave their families to protect our country. I pray for their successful and safe mission. Also, that God will bless their families with the love, faith, strength and patience to cope all they will endure.

My DH is AD AF also...as Makaylee said any chance of guaranteed follow on or accompanied remote ? Not that I would want to go to Korea...we did the accompanied to Iceland, and that wasn't bad, but I have no desire to try Korea. At least your DH can email every day and keep in touch...I was thinking how different it is now for overseas tours than for our tour on Ramstein in 1988...now you can chat to your friends, read your normal newspaper, and order things off the internet (very important...I was pregnant and I needed bras and we needed to buy a carseat...Vogelweh PX had every Lladro and Hummel figurine known to man, and lots of purple lingerie, but nothing like white bras or carseats !)... my DH has been gone three times since 9/11 and is slated to go again without notice so I understand how you feel. We're just hoping to get our October cruise in. Good luck and keep us posted on any of the positives that come out of this.

I wish you luck that you are able to make your cruise. We had to cancel our first cruise because dh got orders to Saudi Arabia. We already had our plane tickets and had paid in full for the cruise. Thank heaven both DCL and the airline were both willing to give us our money back with no problems. We just had to send copies of his orders.

Another thought ~

Something else to consider (or may already have) for long distance relationships, is a webcam for your computer. Our son bought two before leaving and it is absoutely the next best thing to slice bread! It is so wonderful to be able to see and hear each other when we do have opportunity to chat via internet.....
and it's FREE!! He has even given us a tour of his BOQ there, w/o ever leaving our computer!!
How is that?!

Thanks to all of you for you kind words and suggestions. We have experienced many separations in the past; actually this will be the third year in a row that DH has not been around for summer, the kid’s birthdays and my birthday! We almost expect him to be gone at this time each year, but this will be the longest stretch he has been away since our oldest was one, and she is nine now.

We are also celebrating our anniversary on the cruise, so I already booked the REAS package as a special surprise for us, now I guess it will be even more special.

I know exactly how you're feeling...

My husband is leaving in 3 weeks for a 1 year remote to Turkey. He is gone usually 6 days a month with the survival school, but never for such a long stretch. Our 9 and 12 year old boys are having a hard time grasping how long a year really is.

Our fingers are crossed (and double crossed) that he will still get his leave time in December and meet us in Florida for our planned cruise. I'm hoping the trip will break up the year a little... right now in his job field, they cannot offer a guaranteed follow so I'm not sure where he'll be sent to "return" to.

Hang in there - with the military life that is all we can do!

Just wanted to thank you for the huge sacrifice you're making for our country. You're right, though--the cruise will give your family lots of great memories to help you get through the difficult months ahead!

I'm not sure if I'd do this, but a friend of ours whose DH is going to Korea for a 1-year remote is going along--with three kids--unsponsored! She's an adventuresome woman and is really looking forward to it. She and the kids will be living in an apartment on the Korean economy, and her DH will be able to live with them on the weekends. Some commands REALLY discourage this but fortunately for my friend there are quite a few families in their command who are doing it, and they will have a good support system over there. Interesting!

Anyway, best wishes to you for a wonderful cruise, and thanks again for what your family is doing for our country.

My DH have discussed doing the same thing and if he does get stuck with this duty again we have decided our DD and myself will be tagging along.

My heart goes out to all of you who are separated from your loved ones protecting all of us, whatever the duty station.

My DHs service ended when he blew out his knee after being recalled and while retraining for Desert Storm.

My son is from South Korea and while I haven't been there yet, we are pretty tied into it. We know a lot of Koreans, a lot of adoptive parents of Koreans who travel there fairly frequently, social workers, etc. When I run into people who have been stationed there (they will often mention it when they see my son), most of them seemed to truly have enjoyed their deployment (as much as you can enjoy being away from your family).

It is suppose to be a lovely country. Very first world - particularly Seoul. There are far worse places to be stationed. If you get a chance to visit, you should.
