Not paying the baggage fees!

Hi! I haven't flown in about two years and have a question. I plan to check one bag, and then carry on a purse and small tote with my conference agenda and calendar. This is my question - can I put my makeup case in my tote and bring it on instead of checking it? I have mineral based powder foundation, blush, lipstick and mascara. Is mascara considered a liquid?

I hate checking that stuff just in case something happens and want to be able to freshen up when I get to Orlando before meeting my mom.

Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks - Diane:confused3

You're allowed one quart size ziploc bag for liquids as long as all containers in the bag are 3oz or less. Technically, the TSA considers mascara a liquid and it can go into your ziploc bag. Your ziploc bag goes into one of the bins that goes thru the x-ray with your other items.

Honestly, I haven't had any problems with makeup items in quite a while - even if I forget to throw them into the ziploc bag.

Fixed the link, sorry for the confusion! Guess all that packing made me delerious :)

Not Ursula - My boyfriend is using the nesting method for his golf clothes - we had no idea there were so many packing methods besides sitting on top of the suitcase to get it closed :lmao:

I love the sitting on the bag idea!!! i used to do that but when i went this year we decided to get the space saver bags that u can roll the air out of and they saved us a ton of room! I over pack for everything....and taking a suitcase as a carry on didnt leave much room for souvenirs :(

Make up doesnt matter...they dont worry about it while going through security....they are super sensitive about the 3-1-1 rule tho..my cousin had a 4oz bottle of conditioner and they gave her such a hard time about it. But other then that it seems like you should be fine!

Have a great trip!!

I would rather pack the suitcases and pay the fee then do carry ons for each of us. I like the option of several extra outfits for each of us in case the weather changes. And I know we will be buying TONS of souvenirs and I don't want to have to worry about how to get them home.

Technically it's a liquid, but odds are TSA won't say anything about it. If you'd rather play it safe, just put all your makeup in a quart sized bag and tuck that in you purse or tote, and you'll be good to go. If they ask about it, it's already in the quart bag, if they don't ask about it then no harm done.

Sorry I'm vain enough that I don't want to go on vacation with clothes that are not stylish but servicable.

The yucky bra thing is how I feel if I had to wear the same bra after hanging out in WDW in August and then putting on the same bra. So yep, in my world (and my world only) 90+ heat and 90% humidity= yucky unmentionables.

You can be stylish and still pack light. Haute Couture is stylish but I can't imagine many people trying to figure out how to travel with it cheaply on vacation. And a designer sundress and Kmart brand sundress are going to take up the same amount of space in your luggage. It's not like clothing weighs more because of a brand.

And I think when you're traveling a 'yucky' bra is about the least yucky thing you're going to encounter or should worry about. You'll be sleeping on a hotel mattress that has seen the use of hundereds of strangers - who may or may not have used it for 'baby making' practice. A hotel can only flip a mattress so many times. The only thing between your face and that used pillow is a thin sheet of cotton from the pillowcase. And there's the carpet - it's not like it's shampooed between uses. Who knows what bodily fluids have been spilled on it's fibers. And the TV remote - wonder how many nose pickers touched it? When you're on vacation - 'yucky' is part of the package.

I like to pack very light. When we were in Europe I hated carrying around even the little I did pack. I guess it depends on your touring style though. We didn't want to have to check anything, but nowadays I check an empty suitcase going over, and use that for bringing home souvies and all the stuff the ex-inlaws like to buy the kids while they're there. I do pack more when we go to Disney, because I hate to have to buy things there. But I hand wash my bras at home and don't have a problem doing that there either. When we went for 10 days I packed with the plan that I would do laundry on day 5. It worked out well. . .I hate to have mountains of laundry to do when I get home, but that's just me. The one place I tend to over pack for is Vegas. . .scorching hot outside. . .freezing in the casinos. . .you never know quite what you will need. I also like to bring a few dressier outfits there. . .sometimes you want to get all dressed up for going out on the town. But I have found that heels are not a good choice. . lol!
