At Sonic, tips are usually expected... I know a few people who always tip, but most of my family/friends don't. DH always says that unless they have a drive-through, how the heck are we supposed to get our food if they don't bring it to us? ;)

For us, we use the drive-through if they have it, and we never tip (car hop or drive through) unless we decide to stay and eat (which is rare). At the ones close to us, there is often someone that checks in on occasion to offer more condiments and napkins, and they will pick up your trash when you finish if you stay there, so I tip a bit for that.

Just wondering if we are the only ones that don't?

I tip them. DH doesn't and doesn't think I should. He is a good tipper when we go have a sit down meal and will tip for takeout, but doesn't think he should tip at Sonic :confused3

I just noticed this "Sonic" chain while I was in Florida.. Didn't have a chance to try one out though, but they reminded me of the old A&W Hamburger places we used to have up here in the northeast.. They had GREAT burgers!!

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but how is their food? I'd like to know for when I go back again.. LOL :rotfl:

I tip for a load of food and if I'm using the Disney card so that our hop has to make a second trip in to run the card. If I'm just getting a drink, no.

i ussually do the keep the change tip at sonic, and am in a minority here in town, i once date3d a sonic car hop and she told me that i was the only person that had ever tipped her there

C Ann, the food varies from place to place, but to me its about the same as other fast foods, not my favorite thing,, but ok in a pinch, they do have realllllyy good ice cream though:)

Yes. We either let them keep the change or we give them a dollar. It's not a job I'd want to do, so I figure an adult who is working at Sonic can use the extra money. And I guess teenagers like it, too.

our Sonics seem to have closed boo-hoo... but when they were here I noticed when I left a tip, I would get a mint and coupons, when I didn't leave a tip no mint or coupons. I usually just told them to keep the change because I usually just got a drink.

Ooooh, Sonic!!!!! A large Diet Coke with extra ice, and 4 cups of Route 44 ice - my usual order. I am addicted to Sonic ice and Diet Coke - have one right now from dinner and will typically have two or three a day. They used to sell the ice in bags but now we can only get it in cups. I tip unless I am going through the drive in window. The little girl who usually waits on me had a baby and was back at work in two weeks, so I know it is appreciated. But I am a generous tipper (see valet parking thread!!!) and others feel very differently.

I like their food. It's a good stop on a Friday night after a few beers with co-workers. mmmm, chili-cheese tots. It's one of few places that offer corn dogs, too. Sometimes I eat like I'm nine.

I second the good ice cream, too.

I tip carhops the change if it's more than $.50, otherwise $1.

I always leave a tip at a Sonic no matter what I get. My father owned a similar type restaurant years ago and people always tipped then too.

DH and I both tip at Sonic. We usually have the car hop keep the change plus give him/her a dollar or two extra. We have this one car hop here in our town who is on roller skates and she does all these cool spins and turns and stuff and never drops the food! She is a teenager and a lot of times if there are teen customers there, they sorta make fun of her. :guilty: I think she is so cute and cool on those skates that I always give her an extra tip.

As for the food, it's YUMMY!!! It's my favorite "fast food". I love the Frito chili pie!!!

Yep, I tip. Probably because most of my family worked in tipped jobs at one time or another.

If it's just my Cherry Limeade, then it's the change (50-75 cents). If it's food, varies. Not 20%, but a buck or two, depending on whether it's just me or the whole family.

usually try to make sure they get a buck, maybe more if the waether is bad

btw - DW doesn't think you need to tip at Sonic

I do tip, but not the full 20% that I do in a regular restaurant. (Nothing if I go through the drive-thru)

One of my neighbor's teen daughters works as a car hop at a nearby Sonic. I do know they are paid minimum wage.

Food is great. Gotta try the Cheddar bites. Large Dr. Pepper/extra ice for me!

I'm glad you posted this thread. I always give the server $1.00 but wondered if it was the norm to tip at Sonic. Lots of times I just use the drive-thru so no tip there.

I don't usually. They are paid as much as other fast food workers the only difference is they carry the food to the car.

The ones in this area often have fund raisers with teens doing the car hopping for tips. I always tip pretty well then, usually it's school groups & scouts and other groups. I like fund raisers that have the kids actually doing the work for their group and reward them for that :)
