Not Happy About Going To Disney!!

Not me of course! It's my boyfriend. I keep saying well the trip is about 2 1/2 months away aren't you excited because i'm too thrilled! He's like NOPE!! I'm like WHATTTT how can you not be?? We are going to Disney!! He's like i'm just not!
Then he goes to say how can I be excited about going somewhere I've never been before? I'm like well it's DISNEY!!! The #1 Vacation spot in the world!!! He's like AND?? UGHHHH!!
I just don't understand how he can not be excited!! Yes he's never been before but it's freakin Disney. He should be happy to go on vacation period because he's never really been on a vacation before! I want somebody to be excited with me! He's a loser...lol

The people that aren't excited tend to enjoy it the most because their going into it with no pre-conceived notions of what it should be. You have all the expectations of how great its supposed to be, so you have no place to go but down, where-as he has no place to go but up.

I guess so. He has no idea what he's in for. I think he's thinking Disney is along the line of Six Flags or something. I keep telling him it's not. It's in a class of it's own!

I think we have to keep in mind that not everyone loves or "gets" Disney. If he has NEVER been on a vacation I would suggest it is someplace you both want to go. . . Just a thought.

He enjoys it when he sees me excited though, he realises he's made MY dreams come true by taking me back there - to my Happy Place

I'm pretty much certain though, that once he's there he'll understand. I've so far got him an obsession with all things 'Grumpy' - he loves him, even has a stuffed toy I've ordered him a Grumpy t-shirt from Laughing Place, so that'll arrive for 'travelling day'. So I'm trying at least, to build his excitement!

I secretly think he's excited, just not showing it, as he's mentioned a number of times about 'going back' - and he's not even been once yet! But I'd better get some saving done, he wants to stay at AKL!!

Make him read one of the guide books (Birnbaums -has alot of nice pictures of the rides) Tell him you want him to pick out the rides he want to go on. Maybe after he realizes what he's in for he'll be a bit more excited.

OMG same here! DBF isn't excited and wasn't too thrilled when I chose Disney as our vacation destination. He has never been to the World but he was at the Land as a child (and really doesn't remember it)

BUT I have also been able to fester a love of Grumpy in him and he actually hit the Disney store sale with me and bought a shirt and jacket for himself, and Donald is creeping in a close second so he got a shirt with him too. it says "born angry" LOL. and books helped also, we got several from the library and he started talking with co-workers who have been and its getting better. he's not really excited but at least now he's not indifferent.

just remember to make sure you have downtime planned to relax and hopefully enjoy some "Adult" things too- I know if I make DBF gogogo all day long with kid stuff the excitement will NEVER happen.

My DH isnt thrilled either... he says standing in lines and walking for hours is not his idea of a vacation. i think the problem is that they are MEN... they would rather spend a week sitting on the couch watching football and being left alone.
Dont let his lack of excitement ruin yours... men just are not as excitable

I dealt with this with my boyfriend, too, (now husband.) He was not excited at all because he'd only ever been to smaller amusement parks. He was BLOWN AWAY by Disney and left such a fan that he booked our next vacation as a surprise for me and our DD and gave it to us as a Christmas present.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you come home with a Disney convert!

I was a bit skeptical for our first visit almost 11 years ago now... as a big kid of 35 I was far more excited about going to Cape Canaveral... we stayed offsite and had a 4 day 3 park hopper ticket (AK wasn't open yet)... didn't plan a thing: to me amusement park planning meant picking up a map at the gate and picking whihc rides to do next... that said we did pretty good, I think: did MK first day, Epcot 2nd, MGM 3rd with a hop back to Epcot for dinner, then hopped around on day four seeing a few of the things we missed. Got to ride everythign we wanted and certainly didn't go hungry.

I had much more fun than I was expecting, but basically moved WDW from the todo list to "done"

That all changed two years ago when we took DD, then 3, to MK for a day (two nights at ASMo) as a sidetrip to a family visit to the area. It was the most delightful day ever... and now she's five, we're taking her back for an 8 night stay at AKL later this month, and I'm having almost as much fun planning as we will have when we are there

Ahhh...it seems Grumpy and Donald have the same effect on these men! ShellyShell, maybe you should introduced your BF to these two characters

Like your BF, mine comes to the Disney Store with me (not that he has much choice ) and he's began to pick things up, got himself some Grumpy socks the other week!! I can't wait for his t-shirt to arrive and to see his face, it's got Grumpy on the front with 'I'm only Grumpy on days that end in a Y' underneath him

We have 'adult' things planned also, we're going to take a couple of trips down to The Boardwalk and DTD and Pleasure Island We have an ADR booked for Le Cellier in Epcot too, so we'll spend some time in WS and have a few drinks and chill together in there. Not too MUCH though, I need my 'kid' time, and after a few days I'm sure DBF will be just as excited! I think AK will be his favourite park, he loves 'wild' animals and the likes, so I've a feeling I'll need to schedule a couple of trips here

Hello All, I just had to throw my 2 cents in on this discussion. I have to say I love going to Disney!!! I'm a male and I do "get" it. But I think my personal link to Disney started long ago with many trips there as a child and now I like to take my children there. As previous posters had mentioned perhaps your DH or DBF have never been and just doesn't understand. As far as vacations go Disney is by far the best but sadly for us this may be our last trip for a while(usually go every 3 years) before my oldest will start college. I have done my best to instill the love of Disney to everyone in our family and on this trip We will be taking DMIL who has never been there. She loves Disney movies and the like but I don't think she has any idea of what she is getting into!!! I am very excited to go there with anyone who has never been there before just because I feel it is my duty to "spread the magic". I know coming from a male this may seem strange but believe me, I know other Disney loving males exist. Maybe we are not the rule but an exception to it. The truth is Disney is not just for children but it is for the children deep inside all of us.. my 2 cents..thanks for reading

Mine did the same thing. The first time we went I tried to downplay it and TRIED not to talk about it too much so he wouldn't have this image in his head LOL. He was amazed by it and said he couldn't wait to go back. The 2nd time we went he was excited but said he wouldn't get excited until we were on the plane. And he was right. For 6 months I hopped around the house, counting days, planning outfits etc. He packed the night before and that morning was tired (he's GRUMPY in the morning) so didn't say much but when our plane took off he was like a little kid.

So, just have patience. He'll come around --and HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't all that keyed up the first time I went either. I kept thinking it was just a big amusement park and that it was mainly for kids. That was almost 10 years ago. Now I'm a DVC member and go almost 1X/year.
But, you may have to get use to the real possibility that he might not be a "Disney" person. Remember we're on the Dis boards, we already know that we're obsessed.

I'm with you !!!My hubby...HATES, I mean really HATES wdw.We went 8yrs ago for our honeymoon, and I finally got him to agree to go this Sept for our 4yo DD I had to make certain concessions though...like staying at a 1br villa at BCV( I wanted the contemporary mk view) ..I finally got him to admit he MAY actually enjoy himself....but I am not holding my breath.I figure if I don't pester him and involve him a wee little bit in the planning it may actually work...ah one can dream!!!

i'd say you're right, and he's picturing a six flags type thing, which is fun, but nothing special, the opposite of disney.

Seriously, my sister and her kids go to Southern CA...for free...every summer. The first time they went her kids were about 5 and 7. All three of them somehow managed to have a horrible time at Disneyland, despite having VIP passes that meant they never once stood in line.

My niece is now a teen and madly in love with Johnny Depp and I keep asking her how it is that she isn't DEMANDING to go back to Disney. I think I'm converting her . I'm not sure my sister appreciates it.

Come on, I enjoy the beach. It's great. But given that or a day at Disney, I'll take Disney every time!

Well if he is not excited after the trip, then you can call him a loser!!! If he is like most people the first time is eye opening! I think he will be excited when you go there on your honeymoon on his second trip to Disney!!!! Good Luck!!
