So we just canceled our trip for Feb, I am beginning to think we will never get to the fort. Found out right before Christmas break that DS who is 7 and in first grade failed his mid year benchmarks in reading, Is great in everything else. So looks like August it is for us as I do not want to brave the crowds in June. I do not know if it is due to pops passing or what but just can not seem to catch a break. I am still siting hear reading everyone's threads and trip reports hoping that it will be me soon. Also trying to convince my parents to buy an RV does not seem to be going very well as we have four dogs and do not want to leave them home. Hope all of you had a great Christmas and have a Happy New year! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

Sorry your plans have changed but kudos to you for making your son's education top priority! As a retired educator (teacher and principal) I can't say strongly enough how important these early years are in gaining a strong foundation in reading. I applaud you for making such a difficult decision.
Once you do make it to the Fort, you'll have a great time! August is not bad at all - just a little on the "warm" side.
Good luck, your DS is a lucky boy.

I agree with above. Here is some pixiedust: for August.

I know it's disappointing, but you definitely made the right choice! Too many parents now don't value education like they should. "Oh, what's a week? They'll make it up. No problem. Can't miss my Disney trip!" You realize that Disney will always be there and your son's education is the priority for now.

Congrats on being a great parent!

xtra pixiedust:pixiedust:for the summer !

I agree with mom2AidanAndEli,,Congrats on being a great parent!

Rland,

Me too. <ditto above>. Hang in there and you'll make it.

Man, 1st grade must be hard these days. :confused3

Ok, I can help you with this. This SAME thing happened to my DGS. My best friend is his first grade teacher and she told me that unless he had a miracle turnaround, he would need to repeat first grade. The whole problem was he couldn't read and he was so discouraged! She showed me a picture of him crying because he was SO discouraged when trying to read.

I asked her what we should do. She said to go to a teacher supply store, Walmart, etc and buy a pack of SIGHT WORD cards. Then we were to work with him about 20 minutes each day and read with him each night. I made games working with the cards then helping him read simple books. He likes the Clifford the Big Red Dog series and Little Critter books all which I still had from his dad and uncle.

As the good Lord above is my witness, she called me a week and a half later and said the change in his reading ability was remarkable! She has been a teacher for 30 years and could not believe the change! He VOLUNTEERS to read and beams with pride.

I applaud you putting your son first! Disney, as disappointing as it was to cancel, will always be there. Without a good foundation in school your son could struggled and be discouraged for the rest of his life.

If I can help in any way, PM me and we'll talk more. Good luck, don't give up, your son will flourish!

We went in August and while HOT - it was a good time to go! Lots of folks back in school so crowds were down.

People keep cry'n about It's HOT ,,,I don't care where you are at when it's 95 degrees, hot is hot !! And if your gonna be hot, what better place to be then the Fort/Disney, :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

O I totally agree! And dh did get a little overwought when I threatened to strip in the Finding Nemo show because the AC felt so good! :rotfl: But after a walk in the shower that happened one day all was good!
Better to be at Disney than at home in the hot!

Another kudos for making education your priority! Plus in August there's no chance of NOT getting to use the awesome pool at the Fort! :)

Thank you all so much for the kind words. It's funny my mother is a third grade teacher and has been helping him at night after I do things with him. His school has this thing called dibbles, which is where they have these made up words that I guess teaches them how to sound out words and letters. He does a really great job he just needs more work o well. I know we will get there in August, I know it's brutal but a day at disney is better than a day at home:) and plus I can take more time and not have to worry about being back in time for school. :)
