We have a terrific DARE program in our town. Every year, in cooperation with the county sheriff's dept. the DARE program offers a free one week day camp for the kids entering 5th grade in Sept. It's an all day camp, Mon-Fri and it is absolutely free. They even provide lunch for the kids.

I spoke to the DARE office back in early spring, asking him when the forms would be going home. They send them home to the current 4th graders. Knowing how fast it fills up, I wanted to be pro-active in getting the form in early. He said sometime in April, and it was going to be tight, because of budget cuts, they can only offer one session this year.

Everyday, I asked my Ds if he brought a notice home from DARE. No, no, no...always the answer. Well, now it is getting towards the end of May, something is not right. I call the school and they tell me the forms were sent home WEEKS ago. Oooh, did I let my son have it. He insists that he never got a form. So, the school tells me to call the police station. I call, and leave a message with the DARE officer. He called me back yesterday to tell me the forms went home in March, and the camp was filled up, they overbooked and there were no cancellations. CRAP.

I start thinking, I don't think my son's teacher sent them out, because his friend's mom had not gotten a notice. So I call another one of his friends, mom, and she has twins who are in two different classes. SHE never got a notice. At the ballgame last night, I talked to another mom of a 4th grader, and her DS was in a different class them the other two, and she never got a notice. She was actually doing the calling around like me, because she has an older DD and knew about it. (parents who's kids are the oldest in 4th grade probably don't even know about this). So we now have THREE 4th grade teachers who did not send the forms home. How did the camp get filled up if the kids never came home with the forms? (Not blaming the teachers, they probably didn't get them from the office)

This is open to other towns in our county. So I think that the other towns filled up the camp, and our kids are missing out this year. The other moms I have talked to feel the same as me. We are not happy. It would have been one thing to get the form and send it in, but miss it, because we were not fast enough, but to not even have the opportunity to even attempt to get in, well, that just stinks. My DS has been looking forward to the summer of going into 5th grade because he knew he could go to this camp once he finished 4th grade. He was so jealous of my DD the week she got to go 2 years ago.

I guess it is too late to do anything for your child, but I think I would get in touch with the school board, just to let them know about the situation. Sorry your son is disappointed.:hug

I would try to find out what happened to those forms along the way. You're right in that the teacher probably never got them. But if you called the school and they knew the forms had gone out weeks ago then it seems they had them at some point... I know there's nothing to be done about it, but I agree that missing out through no fault of your own sucks!

If this free program is so important to you, then next year I recommend that you go to the police station itself and stay on top of information about the program. Don't wait for the schools or anyone else to make a mistake; take responsibility to be aware of the program and sign-up dates and get your children in through the source.

If you want something done right, and it appears that this summer camp is VERY important to you and your child, then your best bet is to do it yourself and not rely on others (the school) to keep you informed.

I'm sorry your son will miss out on this summer camp. When I first started reading the topic, I thought you were going to tell us that the program had been discontinued due to budget cuts. Hopefully, it'll be around next year and you can get him in then.

Me too.

It does seem odd though that so many classes didn't get the information. Did the whole school or district get left out?

That stinks, I'm sorry that happened. :(
I would follow up with the teacher and principal, letting them know the forms did not come home, just to let it be known. Other than that, not much you can do. Disappointments are hard sometimes~I understand your vent.

I, too, would also follow up and express your concern.

Consider your school district lucky to have the DARE program. Our DARE program was cancelled because the city couldn't afford to commit an officer to the program.

Since he missed out on this camp is it still possible to find another camp to register him for. Seems sad that he would get to go to no camp at all because of a form mistake.

It sounds like you have several parents who would like their children to go to this camp.

You also said they cut sessions due to budget cuts and are only able to offer one session this year.

Since this is important to you and your son, perhaps you could go to the DARE office and see if they could add a second session where the parents fund the tuition. It wouldn't be free like the other session, but your child would get to go to the DARE camp.

Mickey's Minion said exactly what I was thinking. If enough parents are really wanting this for their kids maybe a second session where parents pay a fee is feasible.

Is this camp run in conflict with scheduled school days? It could be a district mandate due to loss of funding for students not in school.

The DARE program at my kids elementary school was actually taught to all 5th grade classes during a semester at school. The DARE Officer came in every week and they even had a ceremony at the end. IS a big deal to the 5th graders.

I would do as suggested and see if they would offer it for a fee or in another format for your school.

That's how they do it here too. To graduate the kids had to write a paper about what they learned. DD got an award for the best paper. I was so proud of her. They loved the dare program.

That's such a bummer, I would be upset, too. Of course, I know I don't make the rules :lmao: but I would have thought that I would have preferred they raised fees instead of cutting down to just one session. I can see why they did it, only offered it to some schools because if they offer it to ALL the neighborhood schools and with only one session...you could be dealing with a "wait in line at 6am" type of thing, and I am sure they don't want to deal with that drama for a free program. So I can see why they did it, but still, you are right, like stinks sometimes. It's so hard to find reasonably priced camps..I would have LOVED for them to charge $100-$150 or whatever cost is for everyone..that STILL would have seemed like a bargain.

I know my kids really won't get to experience camp..even the gym where I am a member charges $185 for theirs (and it's basically daycare, they play at the gym all the time so they know what's there)- any of the cool camps are very pricey.

That is why I call personally. If I had to rely on my kid, the school, or a teacher, then they would miss out on a lot of stuff & I don't trust anyone to get ME the info. If I want to know about something I find out myself.....

As good as I am with being proactive, I still messed up stuff with my older dd. GRRRRRR.......(That outburst was listening to my dd who was starting HS as a freshman and we missed orientation. Yes....I should have called. She swore to me it was "open house". OK....newbie mistake).:rolleyes1
