Hello :wave2:

Ever since my DF proposed in Valentines day (I know, Cheesy! but I was ill the day before which was when he was planning on asking and he didnt want to wait even longer, Nerves were getting to him!) I have been dreaming of my perfect wedding.

My plans do not include..

A big dress
A church
Several hundred guests
Video man
Photo man
Or even anything remotely 'wedding like'

Instead we want to get married in New York.

We made this decision based on the fact we dont like attending weddings (large or small), we dont like the idea of been 'stared at' by our friends and family all day and we dont like wasting money, we would rather spend it on ourselves!

We ended up with New York because beach weddings are a bit too 'romantic' for us (I know I know, we are a couple of fussy people!) and the local registry office just doesnt seem 'right'.

We plan on flying out from Manchester on the last Saturday in May '06, getting a marriage licience from the City Hall on Monday and hopefully getting Married on Wednesday morning (dont want to wait all day 'cos we will both get too nervous or will be distracted by something and end up been late!)

Does anyone have any comments/ideas re' this plan as we have only been able to obtain basic information on regulations for City Hall weddings for non US residents and it does seem a little bit too easy so I am on the look out for anything that might go wrong. I dont want to tell everyone at home we are getting married on holiday then end up coming home and doing the deed one day before heading off to work!

Airline and Hotel are not really an issue just yet, Will just go for the best deal available for us at then time of booking.

Thankyou for any help.

Do you mean New York city AKA Manhattan? Not just in New York state, right? :flower:

Oops!

Yeap I do mean Manhattan

I am not sure the amount of time you need to have between marriage licenses and Weddings, I would say check with the place in Manhattan you plan to use and make sure that they are open and the requirements for a marriage license (acquisition and delay time for the ceremony). If you have friends in NY, they will probably be able to help you.

If the NY trip doesn't work, you can always book a cruise (Disney or other) and arrange for the Captain to marry you. I always wonderred if that holds true for International air flights? maybe Brittish Airways can have the pilot marry you on an international flight? It's a thought. I think the restrictions in Vegas are a little looser...

If you can't find someone to look up the info, I can suggest a couple of Dis'ers in NYC...

Hey Good luck to both of yoU!!! Coming from someone who is planning a wedding herself, I think its really great what you are doing. Have a blast! Your wedding day is all about YOU, make it what you want. I started out planning a "normal" wedding. I didn't want any frills, nothing stuffy, just relaxed where everyone can have a good time. Well, needless to say, I am about 4 weeks away, and ready to pull my hair out!! But, enough about me! HA!!

Speaking as travel agent, the only thing you might want to look into is, you are going to be travelling during Memorial Day weekend. Air fare and hotel might be scarce.

Good luck with everything!!!!!

Just an idea don't know if it's what you are looking for but Virgin Holidays do package's for weddings in Central Park and other Manhattan areas maybe worth a look?

Hello,

Thankyou for all the help,

I had no idea that it would be a bank holiday in the US that weekend. That def' alters my plans a bit by a week either way.

I dont really want to have a 'package' deal with any travel company. Was hoping just to go back to city hall after the 24 minimum deadline (This is the 'breathing space' we belive to be true at the moment) between licence and wedding and do the deed there and then.

Congrats then... you have a plan. Do you know if you can schedule an appt.?

We got married in NYC last year. I believe you're right, there's a 24 hr waiting period before you can get married, but the license is good for 2 months. Here's a website with more information:

For what it's worth, I think what you're doing is fabulous. We had a small private wedding as well, and we loved it because it was "us"...and you will love yours too!

Dont think we can call to book an appointment to get the licence, Think we have to turn up and wait our turn. There is some good advice somewhere on this thread about getting it from upstate rather than in manhattan where the queues would be longer though.

NB) Have checked everywhere I can think of and I am under the impression it doesnt matter wether you are a US national or not, The rules remain the same but I.D wise only a passport would suffice (will take birth certificates aswell & DL just in case). Neither of us has been married before and we are both over 18 so hopefully no problems.

Two more things,
1- the airplane thing won't work, whether or not it would be legal, since 9-11 Pilots don't leave the cockpit...on US int'l flights. Since you are in the UK, EasyJet might work something out for publicity, but then again you would have lots of strangers staring at you...

2- I forgot to suggest you ask your local place if a US wedding is Legally Binding in your parish; I don't think it gets recorded right unless you are married there...

In the UK you could get married on Mars & it would be legal!

Unlike in the US you dont have to file any documents anywhere, Just issue your bank, the passport office and dvla (for driving licence) with a phototcopy so you can have new cards, cheque books etc in your married name.
