Not cleaning up your mess in an office

Personally, the "break room police" drive me crazy!! It absolutely floors me that they have ntohing better to d than finding out who didn't wipe up thier crumbs and hunting them down to nag them into submission. If it bothers you THAT much, then wipe it up and move on. It takes a lot less time and energy that hunting down the person who forgot, got distacted, or called out off their break to deal with something. I personally think it is really petty and not necessary. If it bother's you clean it, otherwise just walk away. Really, is it such a big deal????

I think this is very universal. My room mates and housemates were like this in college, my workmates are like this now to varying degrees and my in-laws are like this too. It drives me batty!

My mom has had that problem in her office for YEARS. She is the one who makes the coffee every day, because she gets in the office first. (funny...she was told that if she is not there, nobody makes the coffee. They go without:confused3)

Anyway, people never clean up their stuff. They leave mugs in the sink and everything. My mom, being the person she is, cleans everything up before she leaves. I try to tell her not to, but it's just who she is, and I'm sure people know that and take advantage. Not everyone, but some.

BUT, her biggest pet peeve is when someone finishes the toilet paper and doesn't replace the roll. Or they use the last "spare" roll and don't go to the closet to replace the spare.

That would aggravate me too! How hard is it to replace a roll of toilet paper? :confused3

Unfortunately, a lot of people have the "It's not my job, I don't get paid to do that" work ethic these days. I personally think it sucks. If you see something that needs to be done, then just do it!! If you see trash on the floor, pick it up! You know how many people just walk over the trash?? :headache:

Aint that the truth? My MIL retired two years ago, then got bored and started looking for a part-time job to fill her time, all janitorial positions of one kind or another.
She started out at the local high school and was completely disgusted by the lack of "pick up after yourself." There was no way to clean when she spent her alloted hours just picking up the trash off the floor. She got her next job at the local private school thinking it would be a step up. Nope, it was much worse.
She went through three school systems and four major corporations before finding a janitorial job that wasn't a constant stuggle just to keep up with the clutter/trash. She couldn't stand that there was no time to do actual cleaning. That she had to leave when the job was only haphazardly complete.
She loves where she works now because the people who work in the office respect their work environment and keep it tidy. Trash is in the trash cans and the surfaces are clear for cleaning. All she has to do is clean: dust, vacccum, windows, bathrooms and kitchen. She can take pride in the finished product. And the people who work there can come into a spotless office each morning because she actually had the time to clean out the fridge/coffe maker/microwave and scrub all the bathroom surfaces.

Yes trashy people are a big deal, but I agree they are not worth the effort to track down.

I tend to clean up after myself and I'll wipe someone elses mess, but it's because I want a clean place to fix my lunch, I know who the slackers are and personally I think it's shows their level of class, do I bug them? No not really, people who are that rude, selfish and inconsiterate will always be so, nagging about it never improves someone with that kind of charecter flaw.

They are easy to spot though. As soon as a note goes up they are the first ones to whine about how the note poster is such a nag. Oh and I always make sure I know what they brought to the potluck and if it was home made,so I can avoid it. Don't even want to think about the conditions it was made in. There are a few of us who make sure we know who brought what.

I don't think anyone mentioned that as an option (unless I wasn't paying attention). At least I didn't in my original post. I was more griping than anything else. I'm not sure how you would even go about doing that, unless you want to install cameras or something.

I guess I'd have to respond that not cleaning up after yourself in a communal kitchen is exactly the same as not flushing the toilet after you've used it. Is it a huge deal? Nope. But it IS pretty nasty to walk into the room and have to deal with someone else's mess because they didn't care enough to clean up after themselves.

Not cleaning up after yourself in a community situation truly demonstrates how you really don't give a crap about those around you. Someone can say all the right things about how much they care, but actions really do speak louder than words. I'll take people's actions into account as the true barometer of that person's character long before I'll ever consider their words. Talk is cheap.

To the OP --- Today, I will trade you work place messes that others make if you would like. Someone was kind enough to leave a pile of their "waste product" in the hallway outside my office and in the middle of the ladies room floor. It took maintenance almost an hour to get there to clean it up. Talk about nasty people!! I would trade that for a few bagel crumbs and coffee drips any day:rotfl:

Every office I've ever worked in has had these same issues. People are the same everywhere, some lazy and sloppy and some that are either neater in the first place or clean up after themselves if they aren't.
We've got only a few people in our office and with continuing complaining by one coworker (peolpe hate her griping but I'm thankful because it's been working) most folks have started picking up after themselves. Plus the two worst offenders have moved on and their replacements are neater (at least so far).

You've got that right. EVERY office.

We have this problem in our middle school all the time, someone likes to smear it all over the place for others to deal with.
