Not Beach People

My family and I aren't really "beach people". Sure we're looking forward to spending a couple hours on the beach at Cast Away Cay, but we could never do a whole day of it. We certianly couldn't spend our whole vacation simply going from beach to beach. And we feel that since we're going to be cruising, if we leave the ship it won't be just to get on another boat.

So here's my question. What cool excursions have you taken or heard about that have little to do with water? What amazing history can you encounter? How are the ruins in Cozmel?

We're booked for a 4 day Wonder stopping at Nassau, but I'd love to hear all the options so that I can start planning for the next time!

HI Willowwind!

We aren't "beach people" either. In fact, it's hard to get us in the sun at all (definitely the posterchildren for palefaces!) Anyway, we had a nice time walking around Castaway Cay but even better being on the boat when it was less crowded in the hot tubs. We are pretty much alone in this though since most people LOVE the beach and water.

We didn't care much for Nassau - everything at Atlantis costs, even getting there and back - but there is an aquarium and casino. I don't like haggling at markets but it was interesting to look around and see what is for sale. I did buy a conch shell for about $2.00 for a friend and a few other small items. I don't want to appear to sound cheap but we aren't much into souvenier shopping either.

I guess what it boils down to is just this - "I love the boat!"

We will be going horseback riding on the Grand Cayman Island at Nicki's after hearing a very good report from another DIS traveler.
My DS is 7 and a novice rider and he is coming with me.

Happy Sailing!

Thanks for posting Rae, I was beginning to think maybe it was just me. :D

Beach people or not I'm totally looking forward to my cruise!

Having only cruised once, I can only suggest that you DON'T do the glass bottom boat. The viewing area was uncomfortable, there was not much sea life and the colors were very washed out.

I am sure Nassau has some nice areas. . . .but the area between the ship and the glass bottom boat was not one of them. We kept getting accosted by ladies wanting to braid my hair:mad:   It reminded me of Tiajuana (which I saw plenty of growing up in San Diego). We headed back to the ship and enjoyed a leisurely uncrowded afternoon at the Mickey pool with DS 5.

Its JMHO, but we will probably just stick on the boat next time.

WE had a great time going to Atlantis. We played a few slot machine's and my hubby won about $500.00.I won about $150.00, but mine went right back in the slot Machine. We did a little shopping there, and had lunch too. Lunch was kinda pricey a hamburger and fries was around $14.00 at their restaurant Atlas. We did have a beautiful view overlooking the yachts. We are going again in October and booked a room so we could enjoy "FULL USE" of the facilities(pool, slides, beach, aquarium, etc,.):p

if you've read any of my posts you know that we're not beach people either.....we live 10 minutes from a gorgeous mediitarranean beach and never ever go....so that should clue you in......
but we do enjoy water parks so we went to atlantis and used the pools and slides there for about 2 hours.....
then we headed back to the ship...
on CC we snorkeled for about 20 minutes then showered and never went back into the water (the water there was quite yucky in comparison to what i'm used to).....and of course we didn't lie in the sun as we never ever ever do that......our favorite thing on CC was the bike ride...

but like someone here said, for me the ship was the star of the cruise...

however, when i asked my son if the next time we're in nassau we'd just stay on the ship, he said no....he'd want to get off even just to drive around the island a bit...
he said he really enjoyed seeing a 'new country'.....

bottom line, on the longer cruise, we won't go to the beaches...but instead will explore the islands (either by tour or taxi or whatever is available)

We live at the beach (although not exactly a tropical one) and aren't really beach people. We enjoyed wandering around in Nassau, did a little shopping and headed back to the ship for afternoon peace and quiet, like poolside reading and needlework. On CC day we went snorkeling, which DH had never done, had lunch, mailed a few postcards and went back to the ship.

I can't wait to do the same again!

Willowind,
Although I can't speak from personal experience (I'm a definite beach person, probably because I live in Chicago where the beach season is so short that I never get my fill!). But in talking to some of the crew, it sounds that if you only spend a little beach time on Castaway Cay and then head back to the ship, you will practically have it all to yourself. I have always wanted to spend a CC day on the ship so I can report on it, but I have never been able to bring myself to actually do it. But some of the crew were telling us last trip that it is such a peaceful day on board. They serve the same buffet spread at Parrot Cay too, so you wouldn't even miss out on that if you ate lunch onboard. You will also be able to catch the matinee of "Disney Dreams." If you only do a couple of hours on the island, I'd love to hear about your experiences on the ship! That's the great thing about cruising...something for everyone.
