What's my risk in the following situation:

I, as a renter, call the reservation number. I pull the points seller into the call via a three-way line as soon as the phone starts ringing so that I am sure the right place is being called. I listen to the reservation being made in my name and hear a confirmation. I hang up the phone and make payment in full.

Sounds simple to me. How about you?

great way to do it.........now it will be hard to find some one to do it is my bet...............i would not..........but i have enough renters would would tell you that i come through all the time..........i think a renter is getting a great deal and some trust is needed............but making ressies sometimes is very time consuming.........especially when their first two choices are not there..........i have done it enough times to know all the pitfalls............if i was charging you 15 a point then i would jump through hoops for the renter..........but the demand is so high for renter points i just dont have time for renters with those demands and i would choose to let someone else deal with you...............it is basically done on my terms...........if you dont like it youre free to go elsewhere

I agree with bongo. I have rented quite a few times and I wouldn't do it either. Find someone here with a high post count who knows what they are talking about. You won't have a problem.

I wouldn't do it either - for one thing, the renter would then hear my member number. For another, it wouldn't prove / guarantee anything. The member always keeps complete control of the reservation. If he/she is dishonest, it only takes one call and a few minutes to cancel the reservation after you all hang up.

If you are so worried about renting that you are unable to trust that the confirmation letter you get is legitimate or that the person you are dealing with will hold up his/her end of the bargain, you shouldn't do it. The stress just isn't worth it. Book directly from Disney.

Best wishes -

I also agree that I wouldn't do it. To make a reservation, a member needs to supply their member number and the last 4 digits of their SS number. Not something I'd want to share with a complete stranger. Also, it is true that if you have an unscrupulous DVC owner, all they'd have to do after making the reservation during that phone call is call back and cancel it. Even though the reservation is in your (the renter's name) the owner retains complete ownership of the reservation. The renter can't do anything to change the reservation, even adding requests. All that has to go through the owner. If you have a problem with the way renting works, it does require a lot of trust on both sides, don't do it.

In any financial transaction where the goods or services sold are delivered after payment is made there is always risk. The only way to mitigate the risk is to enter into a legal binding contract that stipulates penalties for both sides should either not live up to their end of the contract. I suggest you draft such an agreement that clearly shows what is expected of both sides and the penalty for breach. I would clearly define:

Payment Terms and the results of missing the payment schedule. Perhaps the renter would have the right to cancel the reservation is full payment is not received 45 days prior to the reservation date.

Penalties to the renter for not providing the service (the room) once the payment terms have been fulfilled. Perhaps a full refund of all monies paid to date.

etc. etc.

As a member, I would not be comfortable with a stranger listening in while I give my SS# and member number to Member Services.
