Okay... I'm a yo-yo dieter... Always looking for that quick fix!!!

I do well and i'm very motivated then something throws me off the beaten track and I gain back what I've lost then some.

Did well on the Dukan diet ... came around to Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc... was down 20 lbs, then the sataboge comes..popcorn::

I've been eating out of control lately... it's non stop I'm not satisfied..

Should/Do I go back onto this diet again... set myself up for a failure?

It's a constant struggle... Would like to lose at least 30 lbs before my May Disney cruise --- goal is set to high I think.. why can't I do this?

:scared1:

I don't think it too hard if you give it your all.

I set out to lose 15lbs by March to be back to my pre-baby(um...now 4 year olds) weight. I stopped drinking soda and cut most of the sugar and "bad" carbs out. I am doing 1200 calories a day and exercising an hour a day. I am fairly fit and could right back into running, but even walking is a HUGE help.

Getting past the first 2 weeks is the hardest, but I have lost 9lbs so far. You can do it! :thumbsup2

Set smaller goals, like a pound a week...and see where it gets you.

I am a horrible dieter. The minute I say I can't have something is the minute I want it even if I barely like it. Horrible, just horrible.

What I have done is found an exercise partner. We are many many miles apart. I am in Florida and she is in South Carolina. We both bought Leslie Sansone's Walk Fit: 5 Really Big Miles. We started doing the warm up and the one mile every morning together over Skype. I have lost three pounds in the last couple weeks. We eat fairly healthy. I am low sodium due to high blood pressure and my father that lives with me is low cholesterol. I eat when I am hungry and stop when I am not hungry any more. I did not gain this weight in a few weeks or months so it will not go away in a few weeks or months either.

We are both also signed up with MyFitnessPal.com and track out exercise and food. We know the good days and the bad. Bad days happen. I would rather watch my calories then not eat foods that I love.

I second myfitnesspal.com. I used it last year to diet for my spring cruise and am using it now to lose weight again. It holds you accountable and you can enter exercise and it will adjust the calories allowed for that day.

You CAN do it! I find that beating yourself up over a bad day does no good. Allow yourself a cheat day once a week and try not to go too crazy. Envision yourself in those smaller clothes on that cruise and how great you will feel about yourself. If you have a bad day, don't let that be permission to have a bad day again the next day. Get right back at it. Keep your eyes on the prize.

I haven't done the Ducan diet, but I have done lots: South Beach, Atkins, 17 Day Diet etc and so far the most successful and liveable plan has been weight watchers. I have never been very overweight (always within 20lbs of my goal) and don't know if that makes a difference. I do the online WW plan, don't attend meetings. So far I am down 22 lbs and am even considering losing another 4lbs, but no more than that.

Good luck!

I've done WW but never do that well. I always cheat and then don't log points. I know I only kidding myself when I do it.

The only diet that has ever worked for me is Atkins. But like the OP, I get off track very quickly. The dang beer always gets me.

So far so good this time around. My wife and I have been on Atkins for the last 3 weeks and I've dropped 15 pounds. For some reason, this time seems easier and I haven't been knocked off track yet. I feel like I have a different state of mind this time around. If I can do it, you can do it too. Good luck!

Good luck to u too!!

I too have done Atkins. Dukan is very similiar. Carbs kill me!! And i cant stay away.

I have issues with carbs/ sugar. My dr put me on a low carb diet and I lost 25 lbs in 3 months and I've kept it off for 5 months. No exercise. There's a book about it, the Insulin Resistant Diet. I don't count calories and guesstimate carbs sometimes. I also have an app on my phone that has all the chain restaurant menus with full nutritional info. It will also keep track of your carbs daily, I don't use that part.

Before my insulin resistance was discovered, I tried WW and counting carbs along with exercise and continued to gain.

I still get some cravings and I allow myself some sweets. I know if I'm too strict, when I "mess up" I would go overboard.

If you especially have a carb issue - South Beach and Atkins are very helpful. You just have to follow it. Maybe lose the word diet from your vocabulary and replace it with way of living, healthy lifestyle. Don't look at the way you eat as a temporary solution, make permanent changes that last a lifetime. :)

I am on WW and doing good on it. I do LOVE to eat, so it's hard for me, but if I have a high protein breakfast I usually 'do good' all day. I want to lose 9 more pounds in 8 weeks. That's my Disney goal!

Good luck! You can do it! It's difficult, I know, but it's possible!

Fad Diets do not work!!! They restrict you too much.

I have used My Fitness Pal since December losing more then 14 lbs and many inches on my waist and hips. All I am doing is counting calories, working out, and keeping a moderate deficit. I eat anything I want as long as it fits within my calorie total. It teaches you moderation and portion control... but it doesn't deprive you of ANYTHING!

I want a healthy relationship with food that teaches me how to eat and how to make the best choices. I want something I can stick with my whole life (even when I get to a maintenance stage). I want it to teach me how I can enjoy my favorite foods without over doing it.

I love carbs but they don't love me... I know when I did Atkins, I of course went into ketosis, but didn't do horrible, just didn't like eating all that bacon, etc.. On Dukan, I had yogurt, which I grew to like, added salads and lots of chicken/eggs/dairy.. It worked, but willpower caved around Thanksgiving!! It was a downhill spiral after that.

I have my yogurt in hand as I meet the girls for coffee for breakfast after the kids are dropped off at school ... I'm trying to make small steps!
:worship:
I have to get to the gym too, pay for a membership I hardly use. Time to start taking some classes!!!

I will look into that...

One of the health blogs I visit, Dr. Eades, recently had a nice quote I thought about how to approach weight loss. I hadn't thought of it this way before, but makes sense.

...Obesity is a medical problem caused by a damaged metabolism, which is why one person, without the damage, can eat the same foods without gaining weight that pack the pounds on someone else. Once you realize you have the underlying problem that leads to obesity, you simply have to recognize that you have to deal with it for the long term.

Let’s look at it in terms of another medical problem: high blood pressure. For argument’s sake, let’s ignore the fact that about 80 percent of cases of high blood pressure can be reversed with a low-carb diet, and let’s just assume that the case we’re talking about is responsive only to high blood pressure medication. If you were the patient with the high blood pressure, and I gave you a pill that brought your blood pressure down to normal, you would consider the medication effective. Would you then say, Hey, my blood pressure is normal, yippee! now I can quit taking the medicine? I doubt it. You would say, Great, the medicine is working. Furthermore, if you quit taking the medicine and your blood pressure went back up to what it was before you started taking the medicine, would you say the medicine didn’t work?

Of course not. Your high blood pressure was kept in check with the medicine, and your BP, not surprisingly, went back up when you quit taking the medicine. The medicine itself was effective.

Same thing with dieting. If you have an obesity problem that responds to a low-carb diet and you lose to your target weight, then go back to your old way of eating and gain your weight back, it isn’t the low-carb diet’s fault. You have a problem that responds to a low-carb diet, and you pretty much have to stick with a low-carb diet (although not in nearly as extreme a structure as when you are trying to lose) for the long haul....

I agree with those who have encouraged you to try WW or myfitnesspal. Whatever you do, it has to be something that you can live with for a LONG time and you can't live with a fad diet beyond a few months. More importantly, fad diets don't teach you how to eat right.

also, EXERCISE. You can't lose weight without it. Find something you like to do that gets you moving nearly every day for 30 minutes. I'm having success now with the Runner's World "Run Your Butt Off" for cardio, and Tony Horton's Power 90 DVD's-I do the Sculpt and the Ab Ripper. I've been doing it for a month and I'm seeing progress. My goal is to get through both programs by summer, move on to P90X and get back on the Master's swim team that I was on before I got laid off.

P90x is NO JOKE.

I like the Insanity workout better. You don't need any equipment...It is mostly cross training.(It is also very intenese)

Good luck on the swim team thing!:thumbsup2

I'm really looking for the weight training with the DVD's, because I'm doing running and swimming for cardio. My cousin did P90X, is now doing P90X2, and he recommended starting with Power 90 and moving up slowly. I agree-P90X is not a program you just jump in and start after being primarily sedentary. You won't be able to do it, you'll get discouraged and you'll quit. Starting with Power 90 you see results, your fitness level improves and by the end of the 3 months you're ready to do something more intense.
