Not All Treasure Is Silver And Gold, Mate - *Update 9-17* P60

I can't share your sentiments about flying, but can understand the why's of your aversion to it. Control, and all that.

I guess my reasons for enjoying flying are "cathartic" as well. The idea of going on a new adventure, somewhere quite possibly new and exciting, the freedom of being away from the mundane and routine, the thrill of it all. And I'm a sucker for speed. I simply don't want to be in a car for a gazillion hours wishing we were already there. There are already too few precious hours at WDW (in this case).

Rain. Only rains about twice a year here where I live; but having lived in Oregon for 12 years, well, it never gets better, and I never get used to it. I hate it! Esp. during vacation. But, if it makes for a lucky wedding, well then, I guess some is a good thing! ;)

Oh, and I just realized--1 year ago today it was like 40 degrees in Magic Kingdom and I was sitting on the curb on Main Street waiting for the Boo to You parade. :(

So were we! Those were record low temps that week -- it had never been that cold in Orlando in October.

This year we went at the same time as TK, and it was record highs.

I'm like the three bears -- I want to go back again to see if I can get it just right!

I never used to be affected by flying at all, but I've been finding myself getting more and more nervous as I get older. Always makes me think of my grandmother who never wants to fly alone in case the plane goes down. :lmao: She has flat out said she doesn't care that we'll go down too, she just doesn't want to do it alone.

I don't mind the drive either, but it just eats up too much Disney time. I like hopping on the plane and arriving in Florida in less than 3 hours. One of these days though I'd love to try the train. (When I have lots of available time).

Off to a good start! :thumbsup2

And add me to the "It rained on my wedding day" club! :cloud9: And celebrated 10 years last month! We actually barely avoided a couple of hurricanes - is that extra good luck? :upsidedow

TK, my dear, we are so alike in our dislike of flying, and it's for the very same reasons. I have major control issues (hmmm, perhaps that is why I won't let Charles drive to Disney), and the thought of putting my life into the hands of strangers -- well, not liking it all that much. When I was younger and before 9/11, I never gave flying a second thought, but after having kids -- well, I just can't get jazzed about getting in a tin can that goes 500 miles an hour.

Oddly enough, after enough time passed, I felt safer after 9/11. So many restrictions, and they've really cracked down on certain things. In that sense, it is better.

I've always been of the opinion that when it's your time to go, it's your time to go. Not much any of us can do about that.

Unfortunately, I'm not ready for that. :lmao:

I hope the rain proves to be a great omen for the rest of your trip!

I think it kind of was!

Nah, I don't think we need a support group. All those people who love to fly and land need some serious therapy.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it. :rolleyes1

:lmao:

And without closure, we might really need therapy!

Indeed.

Oh, and I just realized--1 year ago today it was like 40 degrees in Magic Kingdom and I was sitting on the curb on Main Street waiting for the Boo to You parade.

Oh, the Boo to You parade.

Jack Sparrow in the Boo to You parade.

Jack Sparrow in the Boo to You parade and Jack Sparrow standing next to me.

:cloud9:

TK-
Great start!!!! Wow about everyone hating flying. I stayed up the whole night before my flight to Hawaii for my honeymoon. I was able to sleep about 1/2 of the flight... Not good sleep though. The sleep where you keep opening one eye to see if your still alive sleep! :lmao:

I had similar sleep on a plane when I went to Italy. But I was so excited, it was hard to sleep then, and when I did, it was that half open kind of thing like you were talking about.

Yes, I have been to Italy. So by comparison, the flight to Florida doesn't seem so bad. :rotfl2:

Unfortunately (or fortunately), it didn't rain on my wedding day. We got married at the end of September thinking it would be a nice fall day. It was hot- 88 with humidity! I thought I was going to pass out!

Did you get married in Connecticut? I'm only asking, because that is too funny; New England weather!

There is no way my DW would pack the car. So cheers to you!:drinking: <-- Rum bottle!

Why thank you. I will happily accept your offer of rum. You're speaking my language. pirate:

I also hate, hate, hate to fly. I know it's supposed to be the safest way to travel, but I just have a phobia about it. I used to have to fly a lot in my job, the best thing about being retired, except for having extra time to spend with my grandson, is not having to fly anymore! I live south of Atlanta so it's only about a 7 hour drive for me and I'll do that over flying any day!

Terri

Oh, that must be so nice! Being retired, time with the grandson, and being able to drive! :goodvibes If I were that close, I would definitely drive. My CR-V is begging for a road trip. ;)

So...

I am wondering if you heard about the pilots that forgot to land last week? :rotfl:

Um, no! :scared1:

Enlighten me?

Awesome start!

Thanks!

Great update TK!!

Thank you!

I don't mind flying...once I get to the airport:lmao: The 2 weeks or so leading up to the 'big day' I'm a nervous wreck. I have NO idea why:confused3

I'm with ya, sistah.

It rained for Tom and I's wedding too! The wierd part about that is that it was in the 60's and raining..... in mid January in Ohio!! Who'd a thunk??

Wow, that is odd weather.

About the pilots forgetting to land.... they said they were distracted by their laptops.... you think they were DISing????

Paula

Well...the DIS has been known to drive many to distraction. :rotfl2:

I'm so proud of you. First of all, you're not afraid, and that's cool.

Second, you used cathartic in a sentence. So, not only is my trip report entertaining, it's expanding your vocabulary.

Let's see what other interesting words I can teach you. ;)

But, if it makes for a lucky wedding, well then, I guess some is a good thing! ;)

Darn tootin'!

No arguments here!

Why, thank you!

This year we went at the same time as TK, and it was record highs.

I'm like the three bears -- I want to go back again to see if I can get it just right!

My best year weather wise in a long time was actually last year. I don't remember the exact week, although if I look at last year's trip report, I could probably find those dates, but anyway, I think our weather was great.

Either that, or I was so dang happy being just the three of us, I didn't notice. :lmao:

I never used to be affected by flying at all, but I've been finding myself getting more and more nervous as I get older. Always makes me think of my grandmother who never wants to fly alone in case the plane goes down. :lmao: She has flat out said she doesn't care that we'll go down too, she just doesn't want to do it alone.

You know what? One of the hardest parts for me this year about us going down earlier was that my mother, father, father in law, and nana were all going to be on a plane I wasn't on.

Take about hard! Those are four of the MOST important people in my life. I instructed my mother to call me as soon as she landed.

Off to a good start! :thumbsup2

Thanks!

And add me to the "It rained on my wedding day" club! :cloud9: And celebrated 10 years last month! We actually barely avoided a couple of hurricanes - is that extra good luck? :upsidedow

Barely avoided hurricanes? I say that's extra good luck!:thumbsup2

I'll say one more thing about flying. . .

if God had intended for my ghetto booty to be in the air, He would have put some big wings above the booty to get it moving. As He saw it fit not to do it, I don't see why I have the right to play God.

There. Off. Soapbox. Now.

We got married in CT. You never know what the weather is going to be here.:confused3

Drink away mate!!!!!!:drinking::drinking:

We could start with this one... :lmao:

Brings up the subject of catharsis again doesn't it?? We've come full circle...:rotfl2:

I love my MAC... highlight a word then right click. My dictionary shows up. Thank goodness it has this feature... maybe it was invented to be able to read and understand TK and your TRs!!!:goodvibes

catharsis |kəˈθärsis|
noun
1 the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.
2 rare Medicine purgation.

ORIGIN early 19th cent. (sense 2) : from Greek katharsis, from kathairein ‘cleanse,’ from katharos ‘pure.’ The notion of “release” through drama ( sense 1 ) derives from Aristotle's Poetics.

Poor TK. :sad2:

Having issues with catharsis.

And now I am messing with her head about flying.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/10/28/2726215.htm?section=justin

Basically they were "on their laptops" and for 90 minutes "ignored" air traffic controllers.

They missed their landing city by 250 KM. They landed safely at another airport. The pilots have both been stripped of their license to fly. Personally, I hope they are not even able to fly a PAPER airplane after a stunt like that.

Such a dichotomy between Sully (the hero pilot) and these clowns. :joker:

funny how it's changed from

" a headed debate about airline policies" or some other diatribe to "on their laptops"

But of course they weren't asleep....

My personal pilot here was just disgusted by the whole thing. Arrogance and laziness.

Of course he just read me a rather disturbing gallup poll about airline employee job satisfaction. Not surprising but...

1/3 have already mentally quit

only 9% rated themselves as satisfied.

:rotfl2:

Hon, you can step up on that soapbox any time you want as long as you make me laugh like you just did. :lmao:

We got married in CT. You never know what the weather is going to be here.:confused3

I thought so. Ah, the vagaries of New England weather.

Drink away mate!!!!!!:drinking::drinking:

WOO HOO!!!!

I'm actually have lunch with an old co-worker today, so I'll take your advice to heart.

Rum, here I come!!! pirate:

Alright. I like that definition WAY better than the one that was referring to our bowels. ;)

Hey.

I don't have any issues with catharsis.

Well, sometimes. But we don't need to go into that. :lmao:

My sister (and her husband, who is also a pilot) would be seriously disturbed by that as well. That just gives a bad name to those who are out there, working very hard at their jobs, and fearing for their jobs on a daily basis due to this economy.

That was my soap box.

Now I'm stepping down.

;)

Hi TK! This is my first time reading one of your reports, and I'm really enjoying it so far!

Denise

Happy Halloween, TK!!!

I hope you had a great one with the kids! :goodvibes

Happy Halloween!!!

I never did find out what you decided on for a costume. ;)

Ever consider writing a memoir of your trips to Disney?

Actually, I haven't. But that's not a bad idea, thanks. :goodvibes

Hi TK! This is my first time reading one of your reports, and I'm really enjoying it so far!

Denise

:welcome: Denise!

Happy to have you here, and I'm glad you're enjoying it. :thumbsup2

Ummmmmm......Hello! Did someone forget to tell me that is had started???? Geez, just because I know most of the story doesn't mean that I don't want to read about it. ;) Plus I'm going let you tell the story of how I introduced myself to you here :lmao:

A thousand apologies, my dear. To my defense, it was a spur of the moment decision to start this. And we're not that far in. :lmao:

And you do know most of it already!!! ;)

So there. :lmao:

Oh, I'm so excited that I get to talk about our first meeting. Thanks for giving me that.

Honestly, it's one of my favorite memories from the trip, so it'll be a real treat to share it. :goodvibes
