I got the new kitten and took her to the vet while we were in Atlanta. She did blood work and found elevated liver enzymes. She said that you NEVER take elevated liver enzymes lightly. She did any x-ray and said everything looked normal. She is testing for Feline Leukemia tomorrow but since she came from a reputable breeder it seems very very rare that this would be the problem.

She said she didn't know how far I wanted to take the testing. I can't go through this again.....maybe I wasn't meant to have a kitten. I don't know, its just heartbreaking! Anyone have any clue???

The baby I got in Atlanta yesterday looks just like Isis. I did name him Isis as well because he looks and acts the same. He is younger than the little girl I'm talking about on top but is a hyperactive mess! He will go in tomorrow and have the same tests the little girl had, I'm praying everything is okay with him.

Anyway if anyone knows ANYTHING about elevated liver enzymes in kittens, it would be appreciated. It seems almost everything I found on the web talks about older cats and this baby girl was only born on February 18th.

I sure hope that it is nothing serious. My heart is with you as well as my thoughts. Please let us know as soon as you know. I am a kitty person, too.

I have a picture of my two kitties hugging in a bathroon sink that I wish I could get scanned to post.

Hello!

Sorry to hear about the kitten. You definately don't want to take elevated levels lightly.
I would call the breeder and talk to her.

We had someone that we thought was a great breeder, and a friend of mine bought a kitten from them. Fortuantely, the kitten she got was ok, but the other three had Leukemia.

There is something wrong, I would not take the kitten. I would look around and get some sort of health certification.

Beth, I wish I had some words of advice for you, but I don't. I hope everything turns out okay for you and the precious furbaby {{{hugs}}}

Lisa,

I was hoping you would answer. This is just unreal! The waiting until tomorrow is driving me crazy as well!

I do have health certifications with this breeder, if the baby does have Leukemia or anything life threatening I will get another kitten but this being the second time and from two different litters just has me dumbfounded.

Let me ask you this, is there something that you know of that it could be that ISN'T serious? Just grasping at straws because I have already bonded with this kitten. She is so active and so playful, eats, drinks etc.

O hope they'll be OK, Beth....*HUGS*

Did you get to enjoy Atlanta at all?

I've been doing some searching and nothing sounds good. I am definatly scared now! I don't know whether to refuse this kitten and get the black one and have her tested, or whether to ask for my money back.

?????? She is the prettiest thing....I just don't know. I'll update tomorrow. If anyone has any more advice PLEASE let me know.

Beth...good luck. Kittens do not seem to be going well lately.

I am confused though...did you get a boy AND a girl in Atlanta?

Beth,
Right now, I can't think of anything "less" threatening that it could be.

I wish I could tell you something, but I am not a vet. All I know is when I run blood tests and they come back with any high numbers, especially for liver or kidney functions there is something serious going on.

Well..there was one dog we ran the test on, and it's liver function number was way off the chart. But, the doctor said it was due to it being hit by a car. The owner had adopted it from the Humane Society knowing it had been hit. The doctor said it was probably from bruising due to the accident.
So, I guess it is not always bad.

But, Beth, two kittens....same breeder. I don't think I would trust it.
I am hoping and praying it is nothing, like the dogs was, but I don't know if I would or could go back to her for another cat.

If you are anything like me, it does not take long to fall in love with a cat (or a dog). It makes it very difficult when something like this happens.

I hope it all turns out okay. {{hugs}}

That does sound pretty sad...I hope this kitty turns out to be okay. It must be hard on you to have to go through this twice in like a week's time. ((((HUGS)))) for you and the kitty.

Beth,

I sure hope the tests results are good for this kitten! As for the breeder situation, sometimes a breeder can sound perfect but end up with a long list of problems. Do you have a contract with this breeder? I am thinking you should get your money back!
I had lost my 7 month old kitten to FIP and the breeder swore up and down nothing was wrong with him except for a cold. I stupidly took him home with the meds she gave me but it was FIP and it took me a loooong time to get the money back for my kitten. But I just couldn't trust her anymore.

Im sorry, but I noticed Doc Rafki was posting again today, maybe you ought to p/m her

I just got the male from Atlanta...the female is from the same breeder as the male who died last week with heart failure. I wanted another male with the same coloring (which the original breeder didn't have) so I went to Atlanta. I got the replacement female from the other breeder.

I go in in the morning and will let you all know what I find out. I do have a 1 year heath guarantee so I will get another kitten or my money back. I just hope that something obvious turns up for the good or the bad...either way so there won't be a question.

I'm hoping for good news for you Beth.

Good luck, Beth!
I hope I am wrong...and it is nothing serious.

Lisa

{{{hugs}} I'm hoping that it's not serious....

Is there any reason you're going to a breeder? Like, for allergies or something? Because I have two wonderful kitties from the local animal shelter. Many shelters do testing for FIV and leukemia right away (and usually put down cats with those diseases because they're un-adoptable.) The worst my boys came home with was a cold ($12 for the medicine), fleas ($30 for a couple of doses of Frontline) and ear mites (same Frontline, plus $20 to get his ears cleaned a couple times.) And they're lovely cats! I was at the local shelter recently and saw a beautiful cream Siamese -- mean DH says no to a third cat, though, and it just breaks my heart to know this lovely girl may be put to sleep because no one may adopt her.

The reason I went to the breeder is because I have always wanted a Maine Coon Cat. These are a very very large breed and have wonderful personalities. I have always loved cats and it has always been a wish of mine to have a Maine Coon. I have 3 other cats who are just cats and love them to pieces. One was rescued on the day she was to be put to sleep. She is just a black and white baby and is the healthiest thing and so fat...here is Cinders,

ANyway the vet did the FIP test and we will hear in a few days. The breeder actually got a little ugly with me and told me that nothing was wrong with the cat and to bring her back and I would get my money back. There is no way I'm taking her back until I get the results of these tests. The way she acted the vet was lying to me or something...ridiculous, this has been my vet for 12 years!

Hoping the tests turn out okay!

If you do end up taking her back to the breeder and want one from a shelter, you might try petfider.org, which lets you search by breed. We get tons of maine coons in at my shelter, so you'll probably have good luck finding one.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for your little one! I can't imagine having health problems with two in a row, it must be so hard!
