Ok, yes that thread was definitely interesting, however I have a kinda important question as well..............

So I need some input, currently I am "just an administrative staff...... with no power, lowest man on the totem pole" Well I have an opportunity to run against my current boss, who is in an elected position. Her first term she fell into as a result of death, and no one to run against her.

This time no one is challenging her as well, and I the main reason I want to run is because the office needs change. Currently when I do my work by protocol or laws I always get reemed, especially when I try to recify the problems. When she is in the office, the corruption doesnt really happen, but when she is gone there is no holds barred with the other management staff.

I know I cant change the world, but I am very proactive, have a strong work ethic and an college education working on a post graduate education currently. This is a pretty posh job, an elected official with the main crieria being a resident of the county. In comparision, she has on the job experience. Any thoughts? I am just really considering I need to decide and file by the end of the week,

The reason I am so conflicted, because I went to her and pretty much exposed the truth, even though she had heard I was considering running, but blew it off. I was honest, that I was still on the fence, and not totally leaning one way or the other. She acted betrayed, which I find amazing b/c I was honest and up front, even though throughout the time i have been in her office i have never really been respected, but treated pretty crappy, even though today, she admitted that my work product and ethic are excellent and everything I do is in the best interest of the office. I have never gone against anything, every time something comes up even if it is our mistake, I back the office and apologize profusely and immediately address the concern.
I am now just wondering if I dont run, or I do, did I shoot myself in the foot? And am I going to be penalized for being honest and up front? I am not sure, but ironically after our conversation the entire managment team disappeared for 15 mins. Any thoughts>?

It is a female, sorry for the confusion

kind of confused re the dynamics of the job-but assuming you are an administrative staff member for an elected government official (and therefore you are yourself a government employee) and are considering running for their position you may want to review the laws regarding government employees holding elected positions. in some california counties government employees are not permitted to hold offices that have authority over or may have impact on the agency with which they work due to conflict of interest.
so if you were to run and be elected you may have to resign your government job (elected officials are not held in the same status as employees and do not have the same protections/benefits/rights as employees).

i don't know what running against your current boss (in the event you lost) would be like-but i can tell you that when one of contra costa county's board of supervisor's admin. staff persons came foreward (with other people) and blew the whistle on her bosses inappropriate actions (resulting in the person getting bounced out of office) she found that while she was publicly lauded for her honesty, and transferred into a "high profile" job-she was largly ostracized by and large by both her former co-workers and her new ones (the former viewed it as a vendetta on her part for not getting the attention she craved, and the new feared that she because she had "toppled someone in power" she would'nt hesitate to find reason to get rid of someone else who crossed her)-she did not get the warm welcome she anticipated.

Thanks for your input, and honestl.y due to the unprofessional nature of my management staff, I am currently black balled in the county I work for. Actaully i tis pretty crummy considering I was trying to change and move up to a higher position some 140 interviews later I am still in the same office.

I am so confused! Is your boss a man or a woman?

Sounds like an uphill battle, but David did beat Goliath. I would be prepared to lose your job after the election if things don't go well. I am rooting for you. Seems like you have nothing left to lose.

I was wondering the same thing- your post is a bit hard to follow, to be honest.

I'd get a few more years experience before running for office- really research how you can work to make the changes you think need to be made before just jumping into the fire.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I just noticed you're from San Mateo! Did you know that your town has the *VERY BEST* stained glass school in the USA? Possibly the world? Been on fire to get there and take some of the advanced classes but most likely never will. Some of my "glass" friends have and I'm sooo envious! Oh well, that's all I wanted to say. Oh, and do you know who "Jeffrey" is? He's becoming quite famous. ::yes::

Sorry for the confusion, it is a female. Today, I can feel that the conversation was shared, oh well. I can feel the negative, even when i was honest. I am getting the silent treatment, and it wouldnt be that bad, if it werent my direct manager, but it is.
I am still o nthe fence, I was hoping for some more input, part of me kind of thinks what someone else said about waiting, I would at least have my post grad degree, which is not a requirement, but I feel I would probably be a stronger management person with the time and knowledge.
