Not able to add extra person to ADR question

Ok so we are a large group of 20 traveling next month. I was able to get all of our dining reservations for all 20 of us at the restaurants we wanted. Well we just found out today one of the husbands who was not able to originally make it can now join us. I immediately called to see if I could add one extra person on to all the reservations. Out of the 6 only 1 was able to. I get it is very last minute, but my question is this. We have an infant in our group that is counted in that 20, could the adult take the babies seat and the baby sit on the moms lap? Or do they not allow that.

They can't do that. It's a fire code situation- the restaurant has a max capacity, and that includes babies who aren't eating anything.

The baby can sit on someone's lap but they must be added to the ADR for fire code reasons

My nursing baby pretty much was held by me the whole time but she had to be on the ressie.

Sorry I am still new to all this. So when I called this afternoon and they said they didn't have room to add one more, did I need to explain we would keep the baby on someone's lap or did that mean for fire code reasons they were at a max and no more could be added? Should I try again? Thanks for all the quick responses!

Just show up at the podium and checkin, but tell them the story. We did this with all 10 adrs when my parents decided to join us last minute and they accommodated us every time. when I called and tried they told me no on every one of them, but people cancel, and no show all the time. Plus there are a LOT of 4 top tables with only 2 or 3 people etc , so rarely is the entire restaurant at fire compacity.

Just show up and it won't be a problem; forget all this fire code nonsense you're hearing. They aren't about to turn away 20 customers. And seriously, has anyone ever heard 'Sorry, you can't add a person due to the fire code." Get real, people.

The extra person will not substitute for the infant, both are considered persons, it doesn't matter where the infant sits. Lap or high chair, the infant counts. You still have an extra person.

Best thing to do is either try to add one extra, or show up with one extra at the door. If the restaurant happens to be full to capacity for fire codes (this is rare but yes, it does happen and it is not total nonsense) they wont' allow in the extra person though (no matter where the infant sits).

I would just show up, say you have 20, hold onto the infant in the back of the herd and ignore the situation. If someone directly asks after you're seated, say "oh, I didn't know he counted!"

The dis does not promote or allow bending the rules at Disney...ALSO the other consideration is ...what if the inspectors just happen to go when there are ten other families that decided to add one more person when they walk in the door...they would be fined..
But bottom rule is WE do not ALLOW breaking the rules to be published on the DIS

Thanks everyone, I will just keep trying till we leave to see if we are able to add on a extra guest.

Just saw them turn away a party of 15 at 50's Prime time. They tried the "add a person at the last minute" and were told they could only seat the number of people on the ADR.

I'm sorry, that stinks. I'd show up at the restaurants and hope they can accomodate the extra person. This won't help now, but I've learned that if someone is on the fence, especially with a large group, to add on an extra person to the adr. It is much easier to go down 1 then up 1.

Unless you are going the holiday week in February, I'd guess you can add on the extra person in most if not all cases once you are at the restaurant. If they say no, I'd say the husband and wife in that group get to go eat someplace else and you all meet up afterward.
