With the cold winter weather, I have been very dehydrated lately. I've developed a disturbing and rather embarassing problem... I have dry cracked skin... inside my nose! :scared:

Has anyone else had this? It is really annoying and painful! Is there any kind of product made for this? I'm afraid to put regular lotion up my nose, it just doesn't seem like a good idea. I figured, if anyone would know something about nostril lotion, it would be my fellow DISers! So... any ideas?

Vaseline. Or, when I was a kid, they used to put Bacitracin up my nose to keep it moist. My dad still does it to this day (to himself, LOL).

They actually make something for this, but I can't remember the name. However, Aquafor works well.

I have this too. It's awful! I use vaseline or neosporin. But, there are several products out there for this--Zicam makes one. Ask your pharmacist. Or, look in the pharmacy department.

Now are we talking only legal stuff?

I know! I can't remember the name either, but I bought it once and it worked pretty well. But Vaseline worked just as well for me. I put on a dab of it before bed, and wake up fine.

I love Ayr nasal gel. Last winter, the inside of my nose was terribly dry. This stuff worked great! Vaseline works but it is too thick and greasy. The gel is just right. By the way, I am a pharmacist, so maybe that would increase my credibility;)

i've used a saline spray thats very good (and sooths realy well). can't recall the name but it was an otc that the pharmacist reccomended.

I've used saline gel (and spray, but gel stays all day at work). I've heard of aquaphor, but I've heard icky things about it getting in your breathing system, so I avoid using it regularly. Works great for stopping nosebleeds, though.

The recommendations from my pharmacist are always top notch!

Well, I saw a few people on here recommend applying vaseline to the inside of the nostrils for relief. I must say, I used to do this every night using a Q-tip to relieve the pain and discomfort and it did work extremely well.

HOWEVER, one day I suddenly started wondering if it was okay to do this; I hadn't heard of anyone else doing it and I wanted to make sure it was okay. I did a search on the internet and I quickly found information saying that you should NOT lubricate the inside of your nostrils with petroleum jelly.

It mentioned that small amounts of the oil can be aspirated into your lungs as you breathe in and out. This build up in your lungs can be detrimental but I honestly can't remember the details. I thought I bookmarked it but I now can't find it. I did a new search and couldn't find it either. The closest thing I found was a recommendation to use KY Jelly since it is water-based and doesn't cause the lung build up that petroleum jelly can. It said it can cause the lungs to become inflamed. I thought the information I originally found said something about it eventually causing pneumonia, but I can't be completely sure. At any rate, it scared me and I stopped.

Although my nostrils have been fine for quite some time, it just so happens they currently are extremely painful from dryness and cracking and the petroleum jelly sounds SO enticing! I was surprised to see so many people recommending its usage since I had learned otherwise, so now I am wondering if it wouldn't hurt just this once as long as I don't make a habit out of it!

Anyway, I'm sorry I couldn't provide more concrete information regarding the dangers of applying petroleum jelly inside your nose, but I wanted to at least let you know what I had found out.

I use either vaseline or neosporin. My nose cracks and bleeds all winter and this helps. Good luck, it is not a fun thing, I am so tired of waking up and finding blood all over my pillowcase.

I'll take your credibiity! My poor DS has a terrible dry nose and I usually end up using vaseline. He gets nose bleeds all the time...especially winter. We even use the afrin to help stop them. His ENT recommended it.

Lyzziesmom...I'm using neosporin right now but my nose is mostly irritated on the outside...I do use it on the inside too although I realize it says external use only! I've had an infection just in my nose...if that makes since...it wasn't a sinus infection. Good luck...hope your nose is nice and moist soon.:goodvibes

It's not so much dehydration as it is heating our houses and the low humidity.

I've been having problems for about a month now. Dh is just starting to have them. We stick Neosporin up there. Me, I just put a tiny smear in the area that's bad. Dh stuck a big glob up there and said he could taste it about 10 minutes later!! :lmao:

In my family we all use Vick's mentholated rub in our noses at bedtime, it really helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I am laughing out loud this morning and my coworkers think I'm crazy... but I can't believe a question about nostril lotion of all things got TWO PAGES of responses! I just knew you guys would come through!
