Today was my surgery. I underwent a septoplasty, rhinoplasty and turbinate reduction.
My surgery was scheduled for 9 am. My mom drove me to the surgery center at 7 am. I spent 20 mintues in the waiting lobby. My name was called and went out over information with the receptionist, and nurses. I was taken to a prep room where my clothes and belongings were put away. I changed into a gown, special socks and hat. The anaethesiologist came in and talked me about the sedatives etc. Around 8:50 I was escorted to the OR. I was helped onto the table and the arm rests were attached my arms were strapped to each. The nurses and anaethesiologist put EKG pads on my chest and stomach and monitored my heart for few minutes. The anesthesiologist then sedate Today d me with an IV after 15 seconds I was out. My surgery took two hours.
I awoke to one of the nurses shaking me lightly to wake up. I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and other sedatives and I ended panicking. I ripped off the drip pad, and drip pad holder mask that was attached to my ears. I almost took off my nasal cast and a nurse ended up tying my hands to the rails. My surgeon put a new drip pad and a new holder mask on me. After awhile I calmed down and the nurses showed me to how change drip pads and care for my nasal cast. I left the surgery center 2 pm. I came home and managed to sleep in an hour. I'm in some pain but overall I'm doing ok. I don't have packing but internal stints are bothering me as expected.
I'm hoping this surgery will improve my sleep apnea.

Sounds like a rough day  I hope it all goes well!

I hope that you have a speedy recovery.

Remember to take your meds on time, it's better than trying to ease the pain once it has a foothold.

I took some pain meds awhile ago. But what was really tramuatizing was that I was intubated while awake with sedatives and remember a lot of the procedure. I was told I wouldn't remember much but I do and it is scary. If you have the following video you will get some idea of what I experienced.

Are you a young person:) ?
Years ago I worked in the OR as a nurse. Teenagers and young adults tended to have a harder time with waking up. Especially young men. They would wake up fighting!

I'm 23. I woke up fighting. The nurse was very patient and eventually calmed me down.

I had the septoplasty at 23 - I had a reaction to the anesthesia and threw up for 24 hours. Not good with yards of packing up there.

I had the turbinate reducation done years later - plus I had something called "nasal implants" - the equivalent of a breathe right strip but internally - also for apnea.

The turbinate reduction was nothing - but the other two were very, very painful.

Yikes, sorry about your bad anesthesia experience. :guilty:

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and hope surgery is successful.

Browneyes, lots of people wake confused. I spent many, many years working in recovery and it happens a lot, especially with younger people. ;)

Keep taking your pain medicines as often as you are allowed for the first 2 days. By the 3rd day you can back off and only take them if you need them. Really, I can speak from experience, usually you will hurt more early on the second day and get better quickly from that point.

You might also find you will sleep better with extra pillows or in a reclining chair tonight, it will keep some of that swelling at bay and you should breath better. Are you supposed to use ice? Keep it up if so.

I hope you nose looks just the way you want it to and that all the breathing difficulties you had are gone!

browneyes, it won't be long until you feel great!!!

I threw up too and ended up with a large blue knot right between my eyebrows! Good thing I was loopy from the meds or I would have freaked. As it was, I cried a couple of tears and went back to sleep. By the time I woke up the next mroning, the knot was gone.

 Hope you are feeling much better today. Prayers for a speedy recovery. I am going to be intubated too next week while awake. I havent experienced that before with my other surgeries but they have to do it like this they said. I am afraid to watch that video. Take care of yourself.

I slept ok last night in a reclining chair. I woke up at 5 this morning and I can't fall back to sleep. I feel better and am in a little pain. I'm still wearing drip pads and the holder mask.

What kind of surgery are you having and why do you have to have an awake intubation? I have to awake intubations because my mouth is small and I have jaw problems. They give you sedatives and they give you a shot so you don't feel the tubes and LMA too much. The medical staff told me that usually people don't remember the awake intubations much but some often a few people remember everything. The video isn't too bad. It is of a woman and the anaesthesiologist and nurses are very patient and calm in the video.

I am having cancer surgery and right now the one tumor/thyroid is crushing my trachea so if I am asleep lst I could suffocate to death, I will be so glad when this is over. I am glad you are feeling better today.

I'm sorry about what you are going through. For the intubation try to stay calm the day of the surgery and they will sedate you for it and you might not remember. I hope your surgery goes well.

I thought I would do an update on my recovery.
I had a hard time sleeping last night in my recliner. I spent the whole night watching tv and reading. I sleep about four hours earlier today. I'm still draining blood and I'm still wearing drip pads. I hope the draining will stop by at least tomorrow. Today I went out in public to the grocery store and I did get some stares with the cast on my nose and drip pad taped to my face. I think I scared a few little kids lol.
