I had my nose cauterized many years ago. I had polyps and they kept bleeding. Not really any pain, just was causing too much trouble. I was told I couldn't blow my nose or sniff for 2 weeks. THAT was a pain. I had to carry kleenex around all the time and just dab at a drippy nose. I don't recall much pain afterward, either.

:cutie:

I had my nose cauterized about a week before I delivered my DD. Because of the pregnancy they couldn't give me much in the way of anesthesia, just a topical. It was the worst pain I've ever felt. Even worse than open heart surgery. I think my nose was packed for four days. After the packs came out it was better. But my nose was sensitive for a couple of weeks.

I had a nose bleed problem about four years ago. It bleed off and on for a couple of weeks. Finally, it would not stop. I ended up in the ER. They did not cauterize it. They inserted a Rhino. Think of having a tampon shoved up your nose and then, inflated. It was very painful. My nose ran and my eye watered continuously for the 24 hours I had to wait to have it removed. It did stop the nose bleed problem, but it is not something I ever want done again.

OP, your sinus is very irritated. It should improve in about 24 hours. Mine did once they removed the Rhino.

My DD6 had this done twice because of bad nose bleeds. Right after the procedure, she couldn't stop sneezing. The pain lasted for about a day. I gave her some motrin to help ease it. The tenderness lasted for a bit longer. The doctor told me to put neosporin in her nose twice a day. I would put a little less than a pea size drop of it on my finger and place it just inside her nostril. Gently, I would massage the outside of her nostril to spread around the neosporin. It helped to heal the site faster and it also provided some moisture in her nose. Even after having the procedure done, she still had nose bleeds. I learned that whenever it's very dry outside to put neosporin in her nose. She hasn't had a nose bleed in over a year.

t has been a really difficult day. I am not sure if the doctor that did my cauterization had ever performed one. He did not give me any topical or anything. It was an urgent care office and I don't think I will go to one of those again with a real problem. Maybe an ear infection or something common. I am not one that goes to the doctor very often and I had trouble finding where I should even go today. My local hospital is a trauma unit and said they were packed, I called another hospital and that is how I got the urgent care place. I live in the suburbs of S.F. so there must be somewhere that offers quality care without a six hour wait. My nose continues to run with a clear pinkish fluid almost constantly. I also can't look down because that is always how my bloody noses usually start. I am going a little stir crazy because all I can do is watch TV and use the computer if I don't look down. It's a good thing I have typing skills so that I don't have to look at the keys. Thank you to those of you that took the time to respond. It did make me feel better.

I feel your pain and send {{hugs}} you feel much better tomorrow. Some years back, we were vacationing in Alaska, when my poor Dh got the worse nost bleed of his life :guilty:. It simply would not quit w/first aid, so we ended up in the ER where drs. reamed and cauterized it w/o any anesthesia, causing his BP to shoot sky high :worried:. We were there better part of a day while he was monitored before things settled down and they released him. Thankfully he didn't have any problem afterwards as we were to fly home within a few days. Hope you heal quickly.

I'm sure I had drainage too, I just had tampon looking things shoved up my nose so nothing ever really drained out. But those things were nasty when they were removed. I thought my experience was horrible with a topical applied. I can't imagine how that must have felt for you OP. Every day should get better so I hope you are feeling better soon.

I was cauterized as a kid a few times and my son also. The leaky drainage wasn't uncommon. It lasted a few days after for him each time. He experienced pain after also and it lasted for days.

Take some Tylenol if you are allowed and avoid NSAIDs (Advil). Don't blow your nose. Ask if Saline would be OK.

Hope you get some relief soon.

My 24 yr. old son had this done 8 years ago. He had nose bleeds all the time, mostly during the winter months and at night while in bed. We tried humidifiers, vaseline jelly, sprays, etc. as per his pediatrician. We finally had it done because he started to have them all the time. Getting dressed, eating at the table, at work, in the shower - we finally said that's enough and went to an ENT doctor. I tell you he has not had one since then.

Good luck and feel better.

I so feel for you! About a month and a half ago I got a nosebleed that wouldn't stop so I went to urgent care where after 3 hours and 2 attempts at cauterizing they were still unable to stop the bleeding. So then I was sent to the ER where after another 3 hours of bleeding and another attempt of cauterizing they ended up giving me the nose tampon thing which I had to keep in the whole weekend (this was on a Friday night). On Monday I went to a ENT and thankfully he was able to finally cauterize it. That nose tampon was the absolute worse thing ever! My nose was so sore for like a week after, and the no blowing your nose thing totally sucked:guilty:

Thank you for all your support. I am feeling a lot better today and the drainage stopped. Motrin has been able to control the pain. I was at a low place last night and really appreciate all your support.
