Norway ride and movie

We've seen every WS movie, and we re-view all of them each visit EXCEPT Norway's -- DS (now 8) was really disturbed by it on our first trip (he was 5 then). Of all the movies, we were only disappointed with Norway's -- for such a beautiful country with a rich history, we found the film really off-putting and agreed that it was not good for young children. I respect that other adults enjoy it, but we're hoping they do update it soon and make it less jarring so that kids can enjoy it, too.

Are you SURE you're talking about the Norway film in Maelstrom?

The only thing in it that is even "loud" is during some quick cuts to some early Norsemen around a fire and their long-boats.
And some quick shots of an oil derrick in the ocean.

Most of the film is QUIET with beautiful, poetic images of the landmarks, scenery, and people of Norway accompanied by beautiful music.

The films' "motif" is of a small (6 year-old?) boy looking at (and touching) a "long-boat" in a museum.

What did you find unsuitable for children about that?
:goodvibes

I'd think that you'd find the actual Maelstrom RIDE to be far MORE unsuitable for "skittish" children.

The dark, the scary TROLLS, the backwards section, the drop into the stormy seas at the end... but the beautiful FILM?

I still think you may have it confused with something else.

Here's a teenager's perspective (I'm 17 now, 16 this past Dec)...

IMHO, I thought Norway's was a tad dry. However, that's in comparison to France and China's movies. No flames, please. We weren't able to see Canada's because we didn't have time to wait, will definitely do it next time.

The last time we went to Norway pavillion, we had a FP, and the movie wasn't showing at the end of the day.

DH and I truly love the Norway movie. Largely because of it, a few years ago we went on a European Cruise that had 3 stops in Norway. We were thrilled to visit Norway. We have sailed the fjords in Alaska, but the ones in Norway are even better. One reason is that they don't clear-cut the mountains there, so in Norway you don't see ugly mountains with only the stumps of trees everywhere. Norway is a gem, and I think the movie reflects the country.

Our only disappointment in Epcot's Norway was the food. We couldn't wait to try the Norwegian buffet there because the real thing was so delicious, but Epcot's was unappetizing to us. We haven't been to the Princesses meal there.

DW and I have sat thru all the movies at the different attractions in the countries, it gives you the entire background, having seen all of them now, we do walk through and exist before they start. If we need a break, we will take time to watch them over again. When we hear that one has been updated, we will take the time to see the new film. :thumbsup2

IIt's the people who just walk through the movie who we have to thank for the death of the classic Epcot attractions (World of Motion, Horizons, etc.). People have no patience or attention span to enjoy things any more, they just have to power through to the next thing. Slow down and enjoy the parks!!!
I'm sorry but I must respectfully disagree. Sometimes in a WDW trip we will ride Maelstrom 6-10 times. Especially if we go in the first part of December, as is our custom. The other parks close early but Epcot is always open until 9pm. There have been trips where we have rode Maelstrom at least once everyday and sometimes more than once in a day. I'll watch the movie at least once a trip but if we are riding the ride that many times I am not going to watch the movie each and every time. I'm sorry if it may seem disrespectful or as if I have no patience or attention span but what you may not know is that this may be my 6th time on the ride this trip. :goodvibes

We have watched it every time. We always seem to be the last boat into the theater. HEHE.

But some of those movies haven't changed for years. If that's the case, there is no need to see them again and again. But I do love how Norway does it. They have a ride and a short movie to introduce themselves to us. What disappointed me most about WS was nearly half the countries didn't have a ride, show, or movie.

We always ride the boat-my DD6 loves it, especially the part where you go backwards. However, I haven't seen the movie since 1983! The last time we were there it wasn't even running. And I don't recall over the past few years seeing anyone waiting for the movie to start.

Haven't seen any of the other movies but I plan on finally seeing the one in France (that's the one with seats isn't it?) and maybe Canada. I used to love to watch America the Beautiful presented in Circlevision at DL. You had to stand but I just loved that movie. Of course, I'm sure I won't feel all emotional when they play the music like I do when I hear American patriotic music (like America the Beautiful and fireworks) I always get a little teary eyed.

Does anyone ever sit through the movies when the ride it over? I will admit that we sometimes will if we need a break and are hot but most often the people walk right through the movie and get the heck outta there

We have not stopped for the movie in a very long time. I agree that if we needed a break this would be a good place for it but other than that we just walk right through.

We sat through it our first few visits, but have been many times since and no longer stop. If you've not ever seen it, I would say it is worth the wait. I would definitely stay to watch if they ever changed it.

We have yet to sit for movie. I think this year we will (time permitting)

I've never watched the movie but maybe I will next time. I've been to Norway one time and it is absolutely beautiful. I hope you get a chance to go sometime.

And, for the record, this is a VERY SHORT film.

It is only FIVE MINUTES, so in the vast scheme of Epcot days, you won't be investing much of your time if you choose to see it.

Its a very nice film in the breif time it runs.
