Just watched The Amazing Race episode where they're running around Norway and the wife and I decided that's our next cruise! Looking for any advice on the best time of year to travel those parts of the world. Thanks! :yay:

We went the first part of June and it was wonderful! However, for 2018, DCL has flip-flopped the summer schedule and Northern Europe is towards the end of the summer.

From an article on USA Today:

Best Time for Cruising
Cruises of Norwegian fjord country are offered between May and September, with the most popular months being July and August, when temperatures are at their mildest. The average temperature in Norway in July is 64 degrees Fahrenheit, cooling down to the 50s at night. Most cruises that focus only on Norway embark from the capital city of Oslo and include visits to major fjords, such as Sognefjord and Geiranger, and cities like Bergen and Stavanger. Cruise lines offering a good selection of Norway cruises include Fred. Olsen Cruises, Hurtigruten Cruises and Norwegian Coastal Voyages. Another highlight of a summertime visit to Norway is the Midnight Sun, which, from mid May to the summer solstice in late June, never completely disappears. The result is days that are light for nearly 20 hours.

We went last June and it rained while we were in Stavanger and Bergen. We also had a mild shower in Geiranger, but it was still a wonderful trip. Temperatures averaged in the 50s & 60s -- except when we were in Alesund. There we had a beautiful sunny and warm day. We're going back this June to do the DCL - Northern Europe cruise. We really loved Copenhagen and spent 4 days there last year and will spend 3 days there this year. This year instead of flying SAS we booked with Icelandair, which allows you to stop off in Iceland for 1 - 7 days before continuing your flight to Europe or on your way back home.

Norway is moving to the top of my bucket list as most desired cruise itinerary! Hope to do it in the next couple of years. If Disney's prices come down, I'd love to do it with them!

I have a cruise booked with Princess for Norway in late July next year (pending what ever happens with the family trip my dad wants to do). I also have a Med/Greece one booked that I am deciding between. Both have their pluses - the biggest one with the Norway itinerary is it is JUST Norway - no Russia or anywhere else I have zero desire to visit - which is pretty rare. But we shall see...

Seems like it is going to be pretty rainy next week for us too - so maybe later would be "better". But hey, it beats being at work! Just need to get through today and tomorrow..! :boat:

Ditto for me too. I was going to the Norwegian Fjords with Iceland next year, but I think I want to go further north.

I wouldn't do Norway without Geiranger. It was the most beautiful part of the trip from sailing into the narrow fjord to Geiranger itself! No idea why DCL cut it in 2018.

Good to know!

I feel the same way..! I am so glad we are going there this year (barring any unforeseen change in the ports for whatever reason of course..!)

My guess is the current itinerary isn't selling like they want it to. I think they are redoing the fjords cruise to add in more recognizable names. Geiranger is probably too far to include with a 7 night Oslo cruise.

Good to know my instinct was right. If DCL doesn't include it 2019 we might do a land based tour instead of a cruise.

Summer is the best time to visit Norway to catch good weather and see the midnight sun. More hours of daylight is a good chance to see more, right? :) I usually trust sources like rove.me and Responsible Travel to check the best time to visit places. They give some great tips!

Just FYI, this is a post from 2017. Geiranger is included on next year's DCL Norway itinerary.

We were on the 2015 June 29th Cruise to Scandinavia and Iceland and we had totally fine weather for those regions (expect to wear sweaters and windbreakers often, though), very little rain, and incredible evenings because of the midnight sun! Book second seating for dinner if you go, we would leave the dinner table at 10:30 PM and it would still be daylight out! And in Kristiansand, we had freakish warm weather (25 Celsius) so we swam at the local beach !
