So we were blessed with a small windfall of cash. We have alotted for the things we should and would like to take a small trip for our family of 4. DD and DS are 17 and 19. We would like to keep our total expense to $1000.00 We could go the end of August or Labor Day weekend.
Any ideas? We live 1 hour outside of Boston and would like to be able to drive to our destination to maximize our $$$ We need something to do. I would be content sitting poolside somewhere but not the kids.
Looking forward to your suggestions!

Montreal?
Block Island?
Newport?
Acadia?
Wildwood, NJ
North Conway?
Vermont?
Lake Sebago in Maine? Point Sebago is a resort there that rents campers and cabins and cottages.
Ogunquit and Freeport ...beach and shopping
Lake George?...tons of stuff to do to keep everyone happy.

How about Boston? Our teens enjoy hitting the shopping areas at Faneuil Hall, Downtown Crossing, and around Copley. You could also do a Duck Tour, or hit the museums. We did a harbor cruise to George's Island last week, and they really liked that. The fort was fun to walk around, and they have a place to get food there, or you can bring a picnic.

Have to agree with the PP that Boston is great fun. If you live nearby it could mean you haven't "played tourist" in years.

North Conway area of NH is also great. Lots to do for kids and adults. Easy to drive to and traffic isn't an issue like in the city. You could combine with a day trip to Old Orchard Beach if you wanted to visit the beach too. It's kind of a long trip but the local kids love to go to the OOB as they call it! We live nearby so I am prejudiced but I can't imagine funning out of things for the teenagers to do.

How about Cape Cod? Lots to do--great beaches, hiking trails, shopping, bike trails, dinner train, mini golf, Water Wizz water park. Even a day trip to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket.

I could have wrote your post (except for the windfall part ;) ). We've leaning toward staying in Portsmouth, NH with shopping in nearby Kittery, Maine at the outlets there. We also considered the White Mountains (NH) since we haven't been in several years but the kids can do some fall clothes shopping in Kittery. Like you, we're looking to just relax somewhere with a change of scenary.

If you wanted to travel down to Connecticut/ Rhode Island coastline you could do Mystic area in CT and Misquamicut beach in RI.

thanks for the ideas! Boston is out. We host exchange students and are in the city doing the tourist stuff A LOT. We are not shoppers so outlet malls are not a draw for us. Cape Cod might be good...Lake George...nice idea, will have to research that!

Keep the ideas coming!

Lake George is great. You can go to Six Flags, there is a rodeo, dinner cruise on the lake.

Old Forge, NY is also very nice. There is a small amusement park there (Enchanted Forest Water Safari). You can rent a cabin, rent a pontoon boat for a day and cruise all of the lakes. Very charming town for a relaxed vacation.

Washington DC...all you have is hotel and food costs. Most of the museums/sites are free.

Absolutely Ogunquit Beach! You can travel from York to Kennebunkport on Route 1(Well kind of)- the Ogunquit Beach is gorgeous you wont be sorry.Perkins cove, the Marginal way-safe for your teens to do things alone as well.

Been to Lake George, Cape Cod, the Carribean, the Connecticut and Rhode Island beaches previously mentioned, Freeport and Kittery, Hawaii.I find the Cape Cod beaches,CT and RI beaches nasty.

This is by far the best beach in the northeast, and you have 2 teens. The sand is white, no shells, no seaweed-clear and beautiful.

We leave for Ogunquit on Aug 1st- every year for 18 years. I have a 21 and 19 year old and they love it.

If you decide to go PM me and I can help you out.

Linda

How about drive through the berkhires to Saratoga Springs NY? You can even stop in Cooperstown to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame. Or even Niagra Falls searching for the best buffalo wings?

I 2nd Washington DC,you can get a decent hotel room right outside the city(on the metro line) and take the train in, museums on the mall are free, zoo is free...I love it there! It would cost less than 1k for the 4 of you....

Agree on DC....if we hadn't done it 3 times! hahaha for anyone else though, that is a GREAT trip and you can really manage expenses well!

Can anyone tell me more about the Saratoga area? What is there to do out there?

The vineyard or nantucket sounds great. Any info on that?

Thanks guys!
