North vs. South - is there still a "conflict" there?

It really does depend on where you are going. However here in the cities and close around the suburbs of New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Houma, and Lafayette areas of Louisiana there are so many people who are transplants because of the oilfield jobs, that I've never heard of anyone being harassed because of it. In school growing up we always had kids from different places, I have a good friend from Ohio and one from Michigan who moved here when we were kids. Besides climate adjustment, they never had any problems. The local newspaper just did a story on Minnesota Vikings fans living in the area (because of the playoff game this weekend) and not a negative word is said about anyone. I think there are a lot of people who don't realize that we have cities here with people who are well educated normally socialized human beings who have never lived in the backwoods. We have art galleries, charitable groups, people of many different races, an accepted gay community, recreational sports and parks and decent school systems. In fact my in laws moved here in 1977 and she swears that for the first 10 years she never met anyone who was actually born and raised in this area. Sometimes you encounter a moronic racist person, but they are usually over the age of 65 and not worth talking to anyway. I'm sure there are some scary places out there but I'm pretty sure most of the well populated areas are living in the current decade.
