North To Alaska--May 3, 2011 on the Disney Wonder

ppartekim,
As for the art auctions ... I am a long time veteran of the auctions. The current selection of artwork on DCL has not been the greatest, since the departure of Park West Gallery. Most of that is because PWG has contracts with Disney authorized artists. So, the current auction house tries to fill in with sketches and sericels by current in house artists. The current auction house/gallery also has a track record of poor customer service, improper packaging, and snail's pace shipping!

OKAY ... art stuff aside ... the art auction is a grrrrreat place for free Champagne (and sometimes Appletini's and Cosmo's) ... just make sure you are there when the preview starts ... they auction house gets stingy with the drinks after about 15 minutes. If you have ANY intention of bidding ... make sure you do you homework and diligence in advance. Feel free to ask me art questions (online, or during the cruise), if you prefer. Remember, my advice is free ... the art isn't! DO NOT BID while intoxicated!

Steven:scared1:

I agree PW is much better than the current WE. We had no trouble with PW and saw some art I would not have seen else where (manly because we don't do Galleries). The last items I bought from WE we didn't get until 4mos later and than was after emails to them with cc's to DCL. Pretty much kills any thought to buying from them again. On the Dream, WE is secondary to the Disney Art Gallery (better stuff and better prices). Maybe the start of the end to art auctions on the new ships.

ppartekim,
I believe DCL does Beer, Wine, Margarita and Tequila tastings on 7 day cruises. I am thinking they will have all of the tastings on the Alaska cruise ... and likely most (if not all) on the REPO. Usually, DCL permits lurkers to be at the events (no charge), if they are not drinking. Some people have said they have gone as a 2.for.1 ... meaning, they pay for one person, and SPLIT the samples. personally, I am not sure I could handle multiple tastings in the same day ... ESPECIALLY if it includes Tequila! I think some of these tastings are as little as $15 or so.

I agree with Steven about bidding when drunk...I also suggest that you have a specific limit on what you are willing to spend. I haven't run into any delivery issue with the new gallery - but I do agree that they do not have the selection of Disney art that PW had. On the other hand - the lawsuits that are being filed against PW have me a little concerned about the validity of the pieces I purchased through them. Seems they are being sued for selling forgeries. :scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1:

I put an asterik next to the names that have missing information. Could you please let me know as soon as you have stateroom numbers assigned. Some people I just need names for and another I need a category for participation. Thanks to everyone. We'll have a lot of fun.

Ah, drunk shopping...definitely dangerous! I ended up with some perfume that way on our Med cruise. I don't wear perfume. :confused3 Maybe this time I'll end up with art!

DH is band from the art auctions. He said he has completed his 12 step program and actually got through the Baltic cruise without a purchase. :rotfl2: I believe much of it had to do with the gallery. On the med cruise he purchased 8 items:scared1:. We have definatlely run out of space. DSIS purchased from the new gallery on the Baltic cruise and had nothing but problems getting the two Wooster Scott's she purchased. There was a thread about the poor service and ressponse time.

For those ladies that are asking what the Champagne Girls are all about:

Calling all the Champagne Girls.....

I will be hosting a Champagne Girls Tasting for women only on the Alaskan cruise. Every adult woman is invited. You don't have to drink champagne to attend, but it certainly doesn't hurt if you do.

Here's how it works:

I request a room from DCL. I order a variety of champagne from DCL. I put it on my bill. All the ladies attending are required to wear pink. Pink tiaras and boas will be provided for everyone to wear. We will take a group picture that will be very pink. We will "taste," "drink," "guzzle" and consume all the champagne while discussing it and many other things. It's a fun, fun way to spend two hours on a sea day.

We have a mascot, Sassy Bubbles, who is attending and will be dressed as a pink tink. We have ladies who won't drink any champagne, they are honorary members and can attend without any charge. We have ladies who will just have a little champagne and not all of the varieties, they are the sippers and will be charged $5 cash to attend. We have ladies who are drinkers/guzzlers and will drink all the various champagnes offered, they are the tasters and will be charged $10 cash to attend. I collect some money to offset part of the costs to me. In no way does it cover all of my expenses, but I prefer to offer it at a minimal price so that many more ladies will be able to attend. I always say, "the more the merrier."

If you are interested in attending please post on this thread, send me your name, stateroom number and category preference.....honorary member, sipper or taster.....so I can determine how much champagne I need to order.

Our first tasting was done in 2008 and the second in 2009. Since then three other Champagne Girls Tastings have been done by others that attended, not by me. Personally, I think they stole the name PINK for the Champagne Bar on the DREAM from us. hahaha.

The PWG law suits are, for the most part, regarding their Dali collection. The rumors being spread around are from a competitor, who obviously has their own stake in the downfall of PWG. Personally, I am not a Dali fan. However, if you are not buying Dali from PWG ... I would have no regret.

Over time, we have come to collect ONLY originals. My DW and I have personally met artists Alfred Gockel, Andrew Bone, Simon Bull, Dominic Pangborn .. and some others ... but we now only buy originals when the artist is in attendance. We get pictures of us together with the artist and the artwork. That's is the best provenance.

In the past year or so, I have seen DCL moving towards posting lots of their own items on the walls of the gallery (Magic / Wonder) ... similar to being in "The Art of Disney". It's not quite the same as an auction ... you either buy if you prefer, or move on. By doing this, it *DOES* eliminate some of the commission paid to a gallery ... though I am sure the auction house gets some sort of cut for handling the paperwork. Then again, when it comes to rarer pieces (most of which are owned by Park West), they will most assuredly go up for auction. An example of this is when Ducky Williams is on board. ALL of his items are put up for live auction.

Steven

With most art auction / galleries ... once you spend $x, you are put on their VIP list. You will be invited to regional or national auctions, depending on how much you have spent, and also depending on the artists you have collected. If you have purchased several pieces by artist *JOE*, you would likely be invited to a regional event where *JOE* is a featured artist. If you spend $xx, you will be invited to attend a National art auction (same basic idea). During these auctions, other artists will be present, and the idea is that you will (likely) buy their artwork as well.

These VIP auctions are prepaid, paid in full vacations. The gallery pays your airfare, meals, entertainment (similar to a land cruise), etc. They wine and dine you ... for a reason. They want your money! Usually, they expect you to spend a certain dollar amount at a VIP event. Some VIP events may expect $5,000 to $10,000 in purchases, while others (including some VP cruises) can expect up to $25,000 in purchases, per couple. What happens if you do not buy much, or anything at all? Well, you aren't likely to be invited back.

IF you *do* get invited to a VIP auction, I would suggest you consider purchasing originals. Consider trading in your previous Open and Limited Edition purchases. Often, galleries will give you your original price as a credit, towards a guaranteed future purchase of 2:1 or 3:1. If you think about it as having purchased artwork ... enjoyed it for *x* years ... and then getting to trade it in for your money back ... it is often a good deal (unless the value of the item has gone up significantly).

I'd be more than happy to talk to anyone about artwork ... especially those who may be lurking, or concerned about making the expenditure. The primary caveat in artwork ... BUY IT IF YOU LIKE IT. Don't try to guess what will go up in value. If you buy something you do not like ... odds are ... you STILL will not like it in the future! :thumbsup2

Steven

Well kids do not forget there will be a gathering of the grass skirt flannel shirt fraternity at sail away from Vancouver. To get your commemorative membership card show up in your grass skirt wearing a flannel shirt on deck 10 , yes all new membership cards will be available, I have Red Green suspenders to hold up my skirt:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Open at all, I know Gordy and Lynn's Duffy are ready to join in.

Were you at the auction on the Dream Maiden? Ducky's originals went for around 9K...he was stunned when he found out later on...He told me he didn't think they would go that high. The only thing I regret about that setup (specifically Ducky) is that he doesn't see that profit :(

I wasn't aware the issue was with only the Dali pieces. I purchased a Willardson from them - love it! Bought 2 more from the new gallery, and just purchased 2 Pooh sericels...waiting for them It has only been 5 weeks...I am going to call them if the pieces don't show up before I leave for my cruises...don't want them to bounce around since I won't be able to accept them while away.

I had all kinds of issues with art shipped by FedEx, so I insist on UPS. FedEx can't deliver to my building, then I have to go chase the package down between 3 different depos....most annoying! But that is not the gallery's issue...it is FedEx being a PITA.

Have you ever seen a giclee (spelling here?) crack? I have two that the artist is replacing due to severe cracking...I was very suprised to see it happen. The artists' rep told me they have had issues with a specifc printer, but I would like to make sure that it doesn't happen again - any advice?

Nope ... we were on the 2010 EB TransAtlantic ... had a ton of Ducky pieces go up for auction ... I think the high price was just under $8,000. Ducky has a relatively posh *job*. While he may not see a dime of that money ... he DOES get a lot of perks ... PLUS, he has fun, while collecting a paycheck, while cruising every now and then!

I sold off some my Dali memorabilia (never bought any of his art). Again, West End Gallery is notoriously SLOW ... I would be on their case ASAP! Beware of their packaging ... it $uck$! They put two pieces in the same box, tape them together (no padding between them), then wrap bubble wrap around the pieces ... and put them in the box *loose*. PWG uses fitted hot foam, which is hot glued to the cardboard. With PWG, the art DOES NOT MOVE within the box!

I have two elaborately framed & linen matted Pooh PRODUCTION CELS (with accompanying storyboard sketch(es)) that I would make available, to anyone with interest. Each production cel is matted and framed with the matching storyboard sketch. They would include the original West End Certificate of Authenticity. I acquired them for my sister in law, who, at the time, was an avid Pooh fan. After I purchased them, I learned she was becoming a Tinkerbell fan. OH BOTHER! I have SO MUCH extra artwork, I call the guest room *my studio*!

I have NEVER seen a giclee crack. That's something the publisher would have to address, and it sounds like Willardson is handling the matter (likely with the publisher). MAC Fine Art handles a large volume of print work for many artists, including many who are associated with PWG. I am sure Willardson IS (or, at least, WAS) a PWG contracted artist (funny, you cannot / could not buy his pieces on DCL, but you can buy through PWG). Anyway, Mary Ann Cohen (MAC) is a very knowledgeable person ... if they are involved, I am sure it will get remedied. This is one example of why purchasing artwork (with provenance) can be very important.

If you ever get the chance to see Willardson paint in person ... DO SO! You can probably Google his name, to find pics of him in his suit jacket (which is painted with artwork). He often gives away his jacket at auctions. CLASS ACT! :cool1:

I will keep an eye on the packaging..it isn't the Willardsons that cracked... 2Michael Godard pieces. The rep told me they have had HUGE problems with that printer. They are replacing the pieces for shipping only. I purchased both pieces (at different times) from Wyland Galleries at WDW...I was lucky enough to meet Michael in NYC a few years back, and had him sign my COA for one piece...so I asked if there is anyway he could sign the new COA...I can only hope! Once I have confirmed that the new printer has gotten the art (I had to ship them out to them...definately a PITA!) then I will see the new pieces 3 weeks later...so I have to make sure they don't ship either. Thanks for reminding me!!

Sounds like Willardson is a neat guy also. Michael G is very unusual. I really like him...interestingly for all the martini art he does - he doesn't drink!

THAT FIGURES! :lmao:
I am going to bring my DCL beer mug ... so I can get 22 ounce refills for the price of 16. If anyone else ever purchased a tall DCL glass beer mug / stein on a previous cruise ... bring it along. You can get the refills ... so long as you have the glass mug!

Brought mine last time from a couple years before that, can't wait to use it again! Might bring both and be a two-fisted guzzler. Yeah, that sounds wonderful! :goodvibes :rotfl:

I also made some graphic itinerays for both cruises
