Looking to buy new living room furniture and have heard lots about the NC outlets. Has anyone ever gone to High Point, NC to buy furniture? Are the deals as good as they say they are? Which shops?

Is there ANY cheap way to buy decent upholstered furniture? (I have enough solid wood tables!)

I purchased my daughters bedroom furniture from North Carolina. Just got online figured out what I wanted and called. Good luck

I have a friend from Illinois who went there to buy furniture for his new home (for the entire 5000 SF home!)
The place that they went to was called Furniture South. It is world reknown
for having the best prices from all furniture manufacturer's. Directly
across the street is Boyle's Furniture and not too far away is Thomasville.
They have a "showroom" that is approximately the size of 8 football fields!
He said to allot at least 2-3 days to be there. It tends to be a
bit overwhelming.

They saved at least $50,000.00 from their entire order. Furniture there is
50-75% off of prices here. The only company that doesn't seem to discount
furniture is Thomasville, but there is no tax and no delivery charge which
saves money regardless.

I told another friend of mine about this and she only wanted a dining room set. When I gave her the name of the place she said that her husband knew the owner (her husband is an ex. pro-football player so I'd imagine he's met just about everyone). Anyhow, they ordered a dining room set only through that place and still ended up saving money.

Good luck. I've always wanted to do something like that.

Don't count on the "no tax" Years ago I worked for the state dept of revenue. Periodically we would send an auditor to these places in NC. He/she would get the sales info for poeple who bought in TN and the dept would send them a tax bill. The law in most states requires you to pay "use tax" for items imported tax free.

Do a search -- there have been a lot of threads on this topic. I recommend that you choose the furniture you want by visiting stores where you live, then get a list of North Carolina stores that carry that brand, and start making phone calls. Keep in mind that the store that has the best price on Thomasville won't necesarily have the best price on Councill or Hickory Chair.

I wouldn't buy cheap upholstery. My parents do and it looks and sits like crap in no time. Buy something with classic lines that you'll have the rest of your life -- just reupholster every 5 years or so and you'll have a "new" piece. We had our sofa custom made and the three chairs in our den all came from one of dh's parents homes. One is maybe 30 years old, the other two are probably 40. My in-laws will be married 60 years this summer and they have the first couch they ever purchased in their family room. You would be sure it was chosen by their decorator (fabric was) and that it couldn't possibly be more than five years old.

We have bought many items from FurnitureLand South and have always been satisfied. We have received damaged items, but the store always made things right. (Damage was a bent lampshade and a cracked door on an endtable.) They have a nice website where you can preview the merchandise. I find the prices to be good. I live in-state and receive free-shipping, but we have always paid tax on our items. One important thing to understand with places like FLS is that you buy the item, then the manufacturer makes it. They typically do not have the item you got in a back warehouse ready to ship. It has taken up to 6 months to get our purchases. A substantial deposit is required the day of purchase as well. These are factors that do turn some people off to places like FLS.

Another place to consider in NC for furniture is Hickory. There are many quality places to find furniture here as well--I am not as familiar with these though.
