My son is in 4th grade and they have to do a state project. He chose North Carolina. I am looking for state info for him. If anyone would be willing send some info I would love it.

Thanks in advance
:goodvibes

I know nothing about NC but if you edit your title to say something like "North Carolina info needed" I bet you'll get a ton of responses. I think there are lots of Carolinians on the board! :thumbsup2

Do you need tourist brochures and things? When do you need them by? Let us know more of the details. I live in Asheville and there is probably tons of stuff on this area that I can find and send.

he needs to create a map and label the major rivers, cities etc.. He also needs to put product (symbols) on the map found in that state. He needs to create a 3-D project also. If you have any brochures that would be great.
It is due May 25th. He has to create his own brochure of the state as well. They are comparing their chosen state to Maine and a why you should visit ..... (in his case) North Carolina. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I got inspired by the thread about regional food. Does anyone have any recipes that North Carolina is famous for that we could make for his display?? :confused3

prolly Eastern and Western barbecue. Western barbecue is tomato-based and Eastern is vinegar-based.

What else do you need? I can try to help out.

As for recipes, BBQ is a good one but what about Fried Apple Pies?

NC is famous for Wright Brothers flight and Biltmore House, (largest private home ever built in this country). Major products include turkeys, hogs and Christmas trees. The major product used to be tobacco, and it's still an important one but is being replaced in some areas. Textiles used to be the major industry. The biggest bank in the country -- Bank of America -- is headquartered here. It's one of the fastest growing states in the country. It's big and very diverse geographically -- has mountains and beach. The first attempt at an English settlement was made here (Roanoke Island) and first English child (Virginia Dare) was born here. It was the first state to open a public university for its citizens. Famous natives include Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, Andy Griffith (all three UNC grads) and presidents James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson.

Here are a couple of other good sites.

Also, don't forget the lighthouses and the Outer Banks.

Here are a few dates for you. (I homeschool and I had to teach NC state history last year.)
Virginia Dare is the first English child born in America on Roanoke Island-1587
Blackbeard the pirate is killed off the NC coast - 1718
NC becomes the 12th state to ratify the US Constitution -1789
Wright Brothers conduct the first flight at Kitty Hawk; it lasts 12 seconds -1903
Settlers establish the first English colony at North American Roanoke Island - 1585
Settlers disappear from Roanoke, later known as the "Lost Colony" - 1590
First Pepsi is invented and served in New Bern - 1898
Congress establishes teh Great Smoky Mountains National Park - 1929

If I think of others I will post later.

Those are some of what the state is known for...oh yeah, and BBQ!!

The capitol is Raleigh, though I believe the largest city is Charlotte (home of the NBA team the Bobcats). We have lovely beaches on the east coast, and gorgeous mountains on the west side. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs right along the mountain range. As far as rivers and such, there is the Dan River, The Yadkin River, Lake Norman and a few others.

My town (Mocksville) is unfortunately famous for Colonel Thomas Ferebee, who was born here. He was the Bombadier on the Enola Gay (yup, he dropped the big one on Hiroshima). We have a few plaques and such to him. Oh yeah, and Daniel Boone's parents (Squire and Elizabeth) lived here.

We are also home to the Krispy Kreme doughnut company. There very first store was opened in Winston-Salem.

Most of the NASCAR drivers live around Mooresville (aka "race city USA"), and Lowe's Motor Speedway is in Charlotte.

Other famous NCers-Randy Travis (country singer), Kelly Pickler, Clay Aiken, Chris, Paris, and Bucky from American Idol (I think those are all right, might want to check the AI site)

BBQ is definitely the most famous food, but Chell's idea about the pies was great too. My grandmother always made those when I was a kid. YUM!

There are a couple uniquities in this area. There are natural mineral baths in Hot Springs, NC. These used to attract all the wealthy people in the Vanderbilt/Rockefeller era. As a side note, 3 hotels have been built on the property and all three have burned down.

Up until a few years ago, the only school on an island that was uninhabited was in a small town called Marshall, NC. The school has closed, but opened originally in 1926.

Does anyone know what our number one cash crop currently is - legal or otherwise? I know what it was a few years ago but I'm wondering if that has changed.

Western NC used to be HUGE for furniture until just a few years ago.

There were some things I thought of last night when I couldn't sleep but I can't seem to recall them all just now.

Sorry I haven't posted this sooner. We have been on the go so much. I wanted to thank everyone for their help with his project. He decided to focus his 3-D project on Blackbeard. Thanks to the info posted here. I do have one more question. You mentioned fried apple pies. Does anyone have a recipe to share. We would like to make them for his class
Thanks
Wendy :sunny:
