Hi there everybody,
Norm and I got back this afternoon - he hadn't been feeling well so we decided to skip our last class reunion fuction and come back home to Cape Canaveral - seeing the 'kids" we grew up with from day one was just so great - it went from class of 1952 to class of 1959 - the guys had a great time reliving all their mischiefs and the gals of course talked how much those great looking boys had "changed" somewhat -
Anyhow the functions we did go to were well worth the going home trip -
Meanwhile I did have time to check out something - also before I forget, I did mail out 15 packets some due to the fact I didn't have a sailing date and was concern that just maybe it could be the 8th and I didn't want anyone to not have their infor - they are coming to you loaded with stuff.
I went by Kino's and did find out that will NOT be open on Mother's day - now when I spoke to the cuban lady, she was undecided as to what she was going to do, but as she said she wanted the staff and herself to be home with the children on that day and also be able to go to the graveyard to honor their mother's which is something that is very traditional - I would check anyhow if you are there - I also went by Touch of Gold which is right in front of Keno's - Vinny and Gary are still so honest with everyone - I have known them for about 15 or so years and have never found them to be dishonest with their customers or a high pressure technique stuff - I still recommend them highly and they will give you conch rates especially if you tell them I recommend them - I also found that right by TOG, a place that does have some beautiful painted coconuts ready for mailing - the charge is $19.95 which includes postage - I know for a fact that the postage runs between $4.00 to 6.00 for mailing - went to the post office to check it out - is it worth it? Well it does make a conversation piece - Norm as a 40 year veteran as a postman commented "glad its not me delivering it"
:D
I went to a shop I was quite impressed with about a year ago and decided to talk to the owners about their chances of giving conch rates to those that went in there - they said they were more than glad to do so - I find their products nice, well presentation and MOST OF ALL NO high pressure sales pitch - they too are right accross from Touch of Gold and its call Lovable look - I got their business card and will enclose it with the Key West packets that I mail to those that want them - they offered to pay me for recommending them, but I asked that to please give the extra discounts to you - I believe you will be pleased -
As I was walking, I started speaking to a young man from Canada - I had my little 4 legged "child" with me and he took interest in her - he was young and his first trip to Key West - he spoke of going to the tee shirt shops on Duval Street and said he got so confused to being pulled in so many directions with how many tee shirts do you want, what size etc, that he got the heck out of there and decided to check shops on Whitehead Street - I gave him some information and he was on his way with a sigh of relief - he suggested Key West would do good putting me up as their PR ------anyhow Norm and I checked the new Messon De Pepe out on North Roosevelt - oh my gosh the food, the presentation, the place all was great - but then it is a latin restaurant and my grandfather's picture is there so just maybe I was swayed a little :teeth:
Now noone knows for sure when the dredging of the waters will begin, but it should be this month - I learned the Navy is coming back to Key West - the nuclear subs will come from Puerto Rico to Key West - the Navy was literally "thrown out" of Key West in 1972 and now they are coming back in full force - new housing at Sigbee's and on White street will housed them - Norm and I were talking before long the island is going to sink - anyhow the area where the cruise ships come in need to be dredged another 32 feet in order to accomadate all that will be happening down there - some of the cruisers will be "ferry in" - Disney among other cruise ships have decided they would wait until cruisers can disembark without so much problems.
I also learned the city is trying to find a way to deal with the almost 2000 homeless people in Key West to get them into housing and jobs - this way the panhandling won't be so much especially on duval Street - Traffic is very heavy and parking is even harder - I was lucky - I only had to walk a few blocks from where I was going and it was an enjoyable walk .
Well that is about it for now - I did bring a bunch of goodies for anyone that wants it, but will post more on that later.
Hugssssssss to all
Always

Hi Shirley, I also hope that Norm is feeling better. In reading your post about the dredging -- you seem to indicate that Disney won't be ferrying passengers to the pier. Does that mean that Disney won't be docking at Key West at all? We are going on the 6/5 Western, and were going to book an excursion on our own, but I won't do that if we won't be going to Key West. Any further information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Welcome Back Shirley and Norm, sounds like you did a lot in a few days!!! Glad you made it back home safe and sound!!! :wave2:

Thanks Shirley & Norm for always looking out for us.,..You do SO much for the Disboards!! sorry you had to cut your trip short, but I hope Norm is feeling better soon.

I understand the dredging won't take that much time - it just will inconvient some - I am sure if your cruise is directed somewhere else, you will be well informed ahead of time - if I can find out more will let you each know -
Norm and I did have a good time in Key West, but things have changed so much - wow and so many people and so many cars -
to think our skating rink was the streets =
Doing the excursions on your own is a very good idea since everything is right there at Mallory Square and you do save some monies.
Always
Shirley

Welcome home! You, Shirley, must have the gift of gab.... getting all that info from people! WOW!

::MickeyMo Shirley, thanks for being so thoughtful ! Glad you and Norm had fun being with "old" friends ! Sorry to hear Norm isn't feeling well:( . I was interested in hearing about the Navy, being retired military. Please take care of your selves ! Oh, what kind of dog do you have ? We have a spoiled, but lovable Bichon.::MinnieMo

Hi Shirley, Glad to hear you are doing well.We are sailing in June this year. Beth A

First thanks for all the get well's for Norm - he has been resting - anyhow my little 4 legged girl is named Tia Maria and is a pappion
Anyhow when the Navy was there and left in 1972 - there were subs, ships and then of course the Seaplane base - now jets have replaced what was there so many years ago - what a sight to watch - Navy owns quite a bit of land in Key West - it was very hard for the young men who were stationed in Key West - there wasn't anything to do or anywhere to go and of course they were disliked by the city - when the Navy was moved out, Key West learned a very hard and bitter lesson - Key West almost went into the "bye bye" world for lack of jobs and income - in fact I wrote in the local paper that the decision would be regretted - my letter was published and the prediction came true - anyhow I believe there will still be little to do and things to see, but I know they will be treated better - Remember Key West is a very small island and very vunable - I remember the "Bay of Pigs" only too well -
As for the gift of gab - I love talking to new folks - you learn so much in such a little time - and most of the time it is so interesting - you learn in a short time so much especially about other cultures - hey I give folks a chance to prove this world is full of nice people - a few times I have been disapppointed.
Beth - I have thought so much about you girlfriend - please drop me a note at snelsonbrown@aol.com - hope your mom and dad are doing awesome. give them my love.
Anyhow time for that cuban coffee to start my day.
Much love to all
always
Shirley

Welcome Home!
I hope that Norm is feeling better. It sounds as if you had a wonderful time. And how did you find the time to get all the info? I will be sending you an envelope later in the summer. We don't sail until September 11.
My "4 legged child" is snoring beside me as I type.
