Norfolk or Williamsburg VA???

I'll be driving down in 3 weeks, 81-64-95 (last leg from Richmond). What kind of TUNNEL are we talking about here? I'm not so great with the tunnel thing - the Lehigh one (PA) really stretches my personal claustrophobia limits. Please, someone let me know quickly so I can change my itinerary if necessary!!

You won't hit the tunnel if you get on 95 at Richmond. The tunnel connects the Virginia Peninsula to Norfolk.

FYI The Lehigh tunnel goes through a mountain, right? The Hampton Roads tunnels go under water! LOL

I think I know the tunnel you mean - is it the Chesapeake Bridge-Tunnel, or are there more than one? I read about that one years ago when I'd considered a teaching position on the Eastern Shore. Hehe, I decided that, if I moved there, I'd always go around to the north and avoid that section of road!

Thank you VERY much for the reassurance. As the only driver this trip, I can't exactly close my eyes until we get through things like that. ;)

There are a total of three bridge-tunnels in the Norfolk area. The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel goes from VA Beach to the Eastern Shore. This one isn't directly connected to the interstate system at all.

The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel goes from Hampton to Norfolk and is part of I-64. It can get very backed up at times, not just from traffic and accidents but also from overheight trucks having to turn around and take an alternate route. The Monitor-Merrimac Bridge-Tunnel goes from Newport News to Norfolk and is part of I-664. This one doesn't get as many traffic backups as the HRBT, but is farther west and less convenient for people going to Virginia Beach from the peninsula.

Rush hour traffic in Richmond isn't bad, but if you want to avoid the city traffic driving down to FL, the Route 288 bypass from I-64 west of the city to I-95 south of the city is completed.
